I've been given sheets of transparancies that I need to get onto a computer, any hints on how to scan them in?

They just look black when I try normally.

What model scanner do you have?
Do you know if there is a transparency hood available for it?

A normal scanner is not suitable for slides. Because transparencies need light passing through them to be viewable (as opposed to prints which can be viewed in reflective light), you need an extra light source for your scanner.
If there is no transparency hood available for your scanner, or if you don't want to buy one, you could bring them to a photo shop (if they are 35mm or medium format slides), most do a slide scanning bureau service (quality can be variable).

    How many have you got?
    What size are they?

    I'v twenty, high quality.

I think I'll just ask the photographer for "hard" copies.

If you need them at high quality take them to a bureau and get them to scan them on to a CD for you.

My client got the photographer to scan them in, and I must say I'm absolutely wowed over the quality of them, they're absolutely amazing!

Has anyone out there got any idea where in Dublin I could get 35mm slides digitised?

I've got a slide scanner, how many slides do you have?

I'd say I've got a few hundred going back for the last 30 odd years. They're up the attic so I'm not too sure of their condition.

Probably too many for me to handle! You should think about picking up a dedicated slide and film scanner. I have an old Canon SCSI slide scanner which I got in the 'States.

I have an old SCSI Epson scanner GT8000 which has a transparancy adapter. I have a SCSI card for it but no SCSI cable. The drivers I have only work with Windows 98. If you want to try scanning with your welcome to borrow it and the SCSI card. I can send you a sample that I scanned before. Not as good a bureau or a modern scanner, but might be "good enough". I might even have an old 98 Dell PC somewhere.

I think I scanned in Trannies are they the same as 35mm slides? I seem to remember they were about 2" square. Been years since I did this stuff.

There is a flat bed scanner in Aldi for about €70 and it has a negative/slide scanning attachment. Does anyone know if it's any good?

Haven't seen it. Is it on the web somewhere.

If it is in ALDI. Then it is probably good quality.

Although there are stand alone slide & negatives scanners available that are very expensive as they are designed specifically for the one purpose and the results are obviously the best.

Personally, I have a Plustek scanner with a Slide & Neg scanning adaptor, it has an extra light in the lid which comes on when using it for this purpose. I got it from QVCuk.com/
as far as I remember it was about Stg £90, and I am well pleased with the results.

good is only as relevant as what you're going to do with the scans. if you're going to print them out 10x8 or bigger you might be better investing in a dedicated film scanner. I had a reasonably good HP scanner with slide adapter which cost about €300 a few years ago but even it wouldn't be good enough to scan and print large photos from

Does anyone know where I might source a good quality negative/slide scanner that wont cost me an arm and a leg? I would prefer USB to SCSI.

The higher end Epsons are highly rated. This one gets good reviews.
