    My monitor is http://www.monitorworld.com/Monitors/compaq/s700.html

It is running at 60 hz at the moment. I've fiddled about with the resolution and restarted and it is staying at that rate, which is hard on the eyes. My PC is hp pavilion a115.uk celeron 2.2 gighz Realtek graphics card ("48mb dynamically shared video memory")

is there any way I can improve the refresh rate? It is suppose dto go as high as 80hz.

    google refresh lock.

it's what i use for changing the refresh rate

    atm i have the desktop at 1154x864 @ 75hz and when i play cs i play 800x600 @ 100hz.

windows xp locks the refresh rate for some reason or other

Its possible your monitor doesn't support any more than 60hz

Nice one! Refresh lock put it up to 85 hz, which looks like a solid image, instead of "pain" :).

Much appreciated. My eyes have been sooore. Thanks!

Well that's the resolution I'm using at 85hz now. did you try the refresh lock tool?

I can set my refresh rate higher - monitor turns black with a bouncing red box saying something like "refresh rate out of bounds"

    Think that's a bad thing :)

Your video card no? Your monitor is the next one up in the series that mine's in isn't it? Mine could go to 100hz on lower resolutions!

The graphics card is not the limiting factor here, the monitor (or buggered up drivers) is.

For the higher refresh rates I suppose.
The higher you put the resolution the lower the refresh rate gets... like my crt monitor does:
    120Hz @ 800x600
    100Hz @ 1024x768
Then 85Hz at anything above that until around 1600x1200 which only manages a horrible 60Hz.

    a few reasons.

    1. when i first started play cs i had a pc that only done 640x480, 800x600 was pushing it.
    2. refresh rate is really important to me and i always have to play with over 100hz
    3. spraying seems easier to control at lower resolutions.
    4. the old "it makes people look bigger bugg"*

*not actual bug but more of an illusion.
