should ask on Programming board, but what the hey. Security people here would probably answer faster. I'm using the DigestStream to generate a checksum on a file. I was just wondering is that checksum based on that file or other factors (ie. Would the checksum change if the machine/OS changed?).

Digest algorithms such as md5 and SHA (afaik, the algorithms that are generally used by java) are generally applied to just the data that is being digested rather than anything external to that.

In the case of DigestInputStream and DigestOutputStream, the description is "A transparent stream that updates the associated message digest using the bits going through the stream.", so factors apart from the data going through the stream shouldn't change the result I reckon.
