lisa: The target of this game isn't to set impossible longterm number challenges, it's for a quick bit of maths in between work, for me anyway, and when I see something like your impossible 998, I just don't bother trying to solve.

Remember, on countdown they have to solve in 30 seconds, without calculators.

How can you intentionally keep yours simpler?

I thought the whole idea was to pick one large number, i.e. 25, 50, 75 or 100
and then pick five random numbers from 1 to 10.
And finally just pick some total random number from 100 to 1000 thus making some solutions easy, some solutions impossible and everything else in between? No?

50*10=500
75/25=3 3+3=6
500+6=506

6 + 4 = 10 * 25 = 250 * 2 = 500

83*(9+1)=830
830+(3*6)=848
