Flicking through teletext on the telly there yesterday. Two headlines were stricking as they were right together.

One was about the Chernobyl Childrens Project which left Ireland with a convoy of E3m worth of aid yesterday.

Right underneath. Estimate that E33m spent on Easter Eggs/Chocolate this Easter in Ireland.

We live in a mad mad fcuking world.

In fairness what would the Chernobyl kids do with 3million quids worth of Easter Eggs?

i'd say the point trying to be made is how can we spend so much on stupid things such as easter eggs when people in other parts of the world need so much..

still there is the point that parents of children want to spoil them and we can afford to buy them easter eggs then why shouldn't we..

some may say it's selfish but thats just the way it is i suppose :dunno: :dunno:

exactly! and another point that people should probably keep in mind - who would you prefer your money to go to - huge multinational companies like cadbury's, nestle, mars, who just add the money to the pile, or to a charity that works to improve the lives of countless kids?

i know that sounds a bit extreme, and it's not simply buying easter eggs, or christmas presents or anything like that i object to, it's the huge quantities of them, and the huge expense of them that i think has exploded out of proportion - why do kids need 5 easter eggs each? (even leaving aside the increase in obesity that has started in this country!) i can understand people wanting to celebrate stuff like that, and to treat their children, but everything in moderation!

Easter eggs make my pocket lighter, and my stomach hurt... Nothing good about them!

btw, how did eggs become synonymous with Easter??

"Do you make it madder or do you help to make it better ?"

Is that the only comment you can make yellum?

I thought the 2 headlines showed how we (and yes, that includes me, I'm not claiming sainthood) spend so much on crap.

Not that I have to justify post by answering your loaded question but I do my best to shop ethically, support charities with my time and when I can afford it, money as well. It's not much but it does constantly bother me how wasteful we are and I'm always concious of that.

Well, I guess you could look at it this way. Who do you want to see your money make happy? Your kids who you can see and is tangible without an expensive plane ticket to see or some kid in some poor country that you can't see without a hefty plane ticket and who you don't know and probably never will?

don't think anyone is suggesting to deprive their kids of simple pleasures but I have nephews and nieces who got like 7 or 8 eggs (maybe more) and I know others who got more than that. Speaking of my nephews and nieces, they feel loved and appreciated every day of the week WITHOUT 7 or 8 chocolate eggs.... I'd like to think that when I have kids, I can show them that doing good for others brings happiness too and is the greatest form of love there is.

Chocolate makes you produce seratonin, which in turn makes you happy.

    Nothing wrong with that.

3 million Euros worth of Aid makes Chernobyl babies happy.

    Nothing wrong with that.

Something to do with rebirth and the egg being a symbol of fertility. So people used to get eggs until they eventually, much later, became chocolate eggs.

Also let's put other things in perspective here. There may been €3m sent to Chernobyl, but there's also lots of money sent to other charities. The posts here make it seem like we donated €3 million to all charities in the country.

OH MY GOD. WE SPENT 5 MILLION EUROS ON A SPIKE IN DUBLIN AND ONLY 3 MILLION ON CHERNOBYL CHILDREN!

OH MY GOD WE SPENT 60 MILLION (OR WHATEVER) ON CROKE PARK AND ONLY 3 MILLION ON CHERNOBYL CHILDREN!

OH MY GOD .... (stupid pointless comparisons ad infinitum)...

15 Easter Eggs? That's Child abuse. Just think how fat those poor little fvckers are gonna make themselves with that much chocolate.

Gave my siblings money instead of Easter Eggs. They're fat enough as it is.

    SARKY SARKY SARKY.....

Yeah, I know all those things and those comparisons you made there I had no choice over. Not spending so much on crap and making personal choices on the products I buy MIGHT make a difference to someone else and the two headlines I saw together made me think even more, that OK by you?

Hey, y'know what, instead of spending money today on a crap sandwich in a take away place, I made my own and put the money I saved into a jar which I'll give to a charity... SEE, little things can make a difference...

Take the plank out of your eye in future before posting your sarky comments.

    Thanks

Thats fine by me, yeah. You're a wonderful person, and I'm sure gorgeous women fawn over you all the time and admire your obvious generosity and large genitals. Well done :)

Er... why would you be spending money on a "crap" sandwich anyway when you could spend it on a "really nice" sandwich instead?

And you gave money to charity... so? Does that make you special?

Take the plank out of your eye in future before posting your sarky comments.

Take the stick out of your arse in future before responding to sarky comments and telling people how to speak.

My point (sarcastic as it may have been) was that its pointless drawing a comparison between how much money out country spends on chocolate and how much we spend on children from Chernobyl. €3 Million is STILL A LOT OF MONEY regardless of the utterly irrelevant matter of how many easter eggs we consume.

    Thanks

    You're welcome!

    See. SARKY, BITTER, TWISTED.

"Er... why would you be spending money on a "crap" sandwich anyway when you could spend it on a "really nice" sandwich instead?

Sarky again. Nope, don't think I'm special at all. But my reading the two headlines made me think and had a result today. Not looking for a medal, but in the face of a bitter person like yourself I thought I ought to explain my post and why I think the comparison was worthwhile.

Yep, it is a lot of money, you're right there. But it is not utterly irrelevant how much we consume in the developed world V what the rest of the world have.... You are most definitely wrong there.... Unfortunately your sarky view of the world won't let you see that.

I haven't witnessed such a heated battle over easter eggs since my older brother robbed my twix egg 16 years ago.
