Good Friday - Bank or Public Holiday?

I am never sure of this, but is Good Friday only a Bank Holiday, or is it a public holiday?

Will An Post deliever Mail tomorrow ?

Public holiday i think.

An Post are far enough behind in the mail with taking another day off.

It's neither a bank or public holiday, it's a holy day, tHAT'S ALL. it's the employers discreation if they give the day off or not. An post should deliver

As far as I'm aware, there is no difference between bank and public holidays. Public holidays are the official term though.

From OASIS:

Public Holidays

There are nine (9) public holidays in Ireland each year. Good Friday is not a public holiday. The list of public holidays in Ireland each year is as follows:

* New Year's Day (1st January)
* St. Patrick's Day (17th March)
* Easter Monday
* First Monday in May, June, August
* Last Monday in October
* Christmas Day (25th December)
* St. Stephen's Day (26th December)

I guess what you mean is Church holiday. Most people are entitled to overtime or a paid day off on public holidays.

Yep, no double pay no nothing, apart from the fact that the pubs are closed, tis a normal day from your employers POV.

Interestingly in Sweden , where the ppl seem to be very religious...ahem..they have had since wed afternoon off..officially...presumably for extra prayer time and such.

That suprises me. Swedes seem to be an eminently sensible people. I thought they'd all be atheist/agnostics.

Its a normal day.

Normal in that its a religious bonkersfest.

Normal in that its the first day of a Bank Holiday Weekend and the pubs are closed.

Thx for all your replies. That clears it up. But it still is a weird one to me.

I am lucky that I have a nice employer. We are closed today, but as I have to cover the technical lines, I get double pay, and two days in lieu.

Its only a bank holiday insofar as the banks (and pubs, weird) are closed. I'm at work at the moment. I'm being whinged at about eating meat on good friday too... GO AWAY.

You jammy sod. I'm covering support for my company and all I get is a day in lieu. No extra pay, just a day off some other time. Still, tis an easy day here: there's nothing to be done so I'm on boards.ie and various other websites all day:D

They've an established church there with tithes taken directly from taxes AFAIK. Cheaper to be an atheist - they don't take the money then.
