Digital Video Camera Recommendations for Newb?

    hello all,

Not sure if this is the right board to ask on, (Yes, even admins get lost on boards sometimes!), please feel free to move this to relevant board, mister moderator.

Heading off on holiday soon to Oz and wanna buy a digital video camera to bring back the memories on. Indoor and outdoor use for the duration of the holiday, I want good quality digital video. Also, when I get back I want to use it to shoot short movies/videos for bands etc. so I'd like it to be somewhat decent.

I'm hoping I can save on price if I buy it on the way at some AV duty free outlet on the way through Kuala Lumpur or something.

Basically what I'm asking is which you'd recommend for these purposes and roughly below the 700 euro mark, all in.

I know there's been 'recommendo cam' threads before, but I'm a newb to this whole thing and can't seem to glean the info I need from them.

Any and all advice appreciated. All going well, I'll take down model numbers recommended and buy on the way :)

    tia,

    Luc

If you're stopping in Singapore for a day or two rather than Kuala Lumpur there was a discussion on the open list a while back that I could dig up for you (more about good shops than good products)

    I have this for sale.

It does 30 FPS video and with the 1Gb microdrive you can store thousands of images.

I probably won't be stopping in Singapore at all back.
The Open info might be useful to post thol, between spin going bang and moving to the new place, my open email is all over the place and not easily searchable.

Just a word if caution, Malaysia uses a different flavour of the PAL TV "standard" - PAL B/G. Ireland uses PAL I. Basically, they use a different audio subcarrier and the upshot is that unless you have a TV or VCR which can handle various PAL standards, you'll get mono sound when you plug your camcorder in to play back your footage.
Check the specifications in the back of your TV / VCR manuals.

IRT dv camcorders, you probably know this already but, check that the one you get has DV IN/OUT so you can edit the footage on a PC or Mac and record the finished cut back to the camera. This should standard on all DV camcorders IMO.

Thanks for the heads up Owenw, I'll bear those pointers in mind when buying!

As for this thread, I thought there was a thriving community of digi video people on boards! Maybe I've posted in the wrong place?
