I know that you can go on-line to hear RTÉ Radio broadcasts, use sky digital..., BUT, the sheer convenience of just tuning in an ordinary Radio and listening in while doing other things is why Irish expats in Britain and on the continent would really welcome this LW service.

You see I'm Irish and my wife is Dutch-we are (trying) to raise our 3 kids bilingually-Unfortunately I find myself tuning in quite a bit to BBC Radio 5 live (A poor replacement for RTÉ Radio 1)

Obviously I would much prefer my kids to hear "proper Irish English"!

So come on RTÉ, save my kids from growing up with BBC Radio 5 Live English accents!

Without knowing the ages of your kids I would be surprised if they would be interested in listening to BBC Radio 5 Live or RTE Radio 1. I assume you live in Eastern England, as you are unable to pick up RTE Radio 1 on Medium Wave. The idea that your kids will grow up to sound like anything other than the English kids that surround them is bizarre. If it's so important that they learn to speak and use Irish English rather than English English, you will have to consider moving back to Ireland. But then there would be the impossibility of picking up Dutch radio, which you and your wife no doubt can in England.

Just for the Record, and as listed in my Profile, I am living in The Netherlands!

I guess my point all along is that this LW service is a great opportunity for RTÉ to reach a large number of expats, second-generation Irish etc.

To be honset, RTÉ seem luck-warm on the idea at this time, which I consider a shame.

I'm hoping that shedding a little light on the issue in this forum will put a little more pressure on RTÉ to stick with the idea.

Sorry I misunderstood. Even if you wanted to you cannot get Sky Digital very easily in Holland as it is aimed at the UK & ROI only. Unfortunately even when RTE Radio comes on to 252LW it may prove frustrating for you. In the Evenings the power from the transmitter is lowered significantly. The Irish radio authorities had to agree to this when their use of the frequency was agreed Internationally. This is one of the reasons why the music station Atlantic 252 eventually failed. In the populous London and the South East of England the reception in the Evening was dreadful. Being further away reception in Holland would be even worse.

Although you will still have to put up with English accents for current affairs I would suggest the BBC World Service on 648AM. Having lived and worked in Holland myself I can say the reception is brilliant.

I think the big problem that RTE has in launching, with a few exceptions, the domestic Radio 1 service on 252LW is how will it be financed. As its main market is the UK, and given its coverage problems in the Evening, it will find it hard to sell advertising.

how hard is it for RTÉ to put something on that frequency?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,035 ✭✭✭rlogue

Can we please have the inside scoop on what the fugh is going on regarding the 252 frequency?

If RTÉ aren't willing to use it - I'm sure that Chris Cary would leap at the chance of getting his hands on it...

I wonder what the outcome of this "output platform policy review" will be?

The "Inside scoop" is the same as the outside scoop, and that is that the intention is to have Radio 1 broadcasting on 252 LW in the first quarter of 2004...

    Dear **********

On behalf of RTÉ can I acknowledge your contribution to our longwave 252 tests and apologise for the delay in reporting back to you. The tests have concluded for the time being and our next objective is to bring the issue to decision.

It has been fantastic to read your responses; from those with a professional or collegiate interest; from those hearing echoes from home; from those with an interest in Ireland and from those who simply liked the programmes. Sincere thanks to you all!

Unfortunately, the volume of responses we have collated and mapped means that we cannot respond individually. However, below are some short answers to the most frequent questions you asked.

    FAQs

    Where is the transmitter?

    Summerhill, Co. Meath, Ireland

    What service is proposed?

Transmission of RTÉ Radio 1 – a talk and music channel from Ireland’s public service broadcaster that is the most popular in the country. The station is particularly strong in spoken content and public interaction.

When will you make a decision/go on air?

We envisage presenting a proposal to our Authority (Governing Body) by the year end and, if approved, starting the service in Spring 2004 (perhaps there may be an appropriate date in the middle of March?!). I will mail you when we have a decision.

    How will you decide?

    The basic factors are:

Desire to provide All Ireland service on one frequency – related to Good Friday agreement and exchange of cultures on our island.
Concurrent benefit of transmission to UK - to serve the Irish community there and to bring our output to a new audience.
Potential demand for the service. We know that RTÉ has a strong audience at home but the wider audience remains unknown. Your mails have been extremely instructive and encouraging in this respect.
Cost of service - the power bill alone for a LW service is considerable.
Mix of existing services. Overseas, RTÉ radio broadcasts its four services on Satellite to the UK and Ireland, Radio 1 is also available throughout Europe on satellite and segments of R1 output are on Satellite throughout the world. We have to be sure that our mix of services is as effective as possible.

Thanks once again – hopefully you’ll hear from us soon!

If it was going to start on March 17th wouldn't they have announced it by now?

The DAB part of it is interesting...

According to todays papers, I could take 5 years. I hope they start testing sooner rather than later!

I was listening to the LW 252 broadcast this morning in Den Haag, The Netherlands-the reception during daylight hours was OK-I guess the real test will be how poor the reception here will be after dark.

I'm curious about how the perceived reception strength of this service compares to that of Atlantic 252 when it was transmitting previously.

Is the reception strength comparable now to the Atlantic 252 reception?
(I do realize this may be somewhat of a subjective question)

Any replies from people in Ireland itself, Britain or on the continent would be appreciated!

In reply to Acting the maggot. Reception of RTÉ LW here in Aberdeen, Scotland is loud and clear.......much better than Atlantic ever was up here!

    Hi all,
I am curious as to just how wide is the reception area for the RTE Radio 1 LW 252 service.

So has anybody picked this service up as far east as Germany, or further from Dublin?

And now that the service has been running a while, what is the reception quality like, and have any of you tips as to how to improve the reception quality in "the low countries", as you may remember I am in the Netherlands, were the reception quality is OK, but not fantastic.

in the RTÉ Guide this week comes a little bit of information about Radio 1 on long wave. it says the MW service is to close temporarily for upgrades or something like that. how long will MW be off air?

    a couple of months,I think.

RTE Radio 1 567kHz is to close for 4 months from Monday the 19th of July.
reportedly so as to replace insulators (along the stay wires I presume) on the aerial near Tullamore.

BTW I heard RTE announce a break in transmission of the 567kHz last night - it was off between 1AM and 6AM due to "essential maintenance".

The presenter Val Joyce said he at first thought he was reading out a notice about an 'outrage' rather than an 'outage'!
