Just read about this on another forum - it could be an easy one to fall for if your not aware of it in advance..

*post cut n pasted from anther forum
    **********************

i got a mail from a mate about this. dont know if its an exageration or not.

If your phone rings and u receive a recorded message "Congratulations. We
are calling to advise u that u have won an all expenses paid trip to an
exotic destination. Please press 9 now to hear further details" Dont!
If u press 9 you'll be connected to a premium line that bills in the region
of £20 per minute. If you press 9 and connect, even if you disconnect
immediately, the other end will stay connected for a miniumum of 5 minutes -
at a cost to u of £100 - the message lasts for 11 minutes. The final part
of the call asks u to key in your postcode and house number (which has other
serious considerations) and then, after a wait of a further two minutes,
responds with the message "Sorry, u are not one of the lucky winners" and
disconnects, adding a further £260 to your bill!!

Unfortunately the calls are originating from outside the UK and as such BT
and other providers are relatively powerless to act.
The only safe solution is to hang up before the message prompts u to press
    9.

I did get one of these calls but it was about 1 in the morning so i just hung up. phew.

why would anyone be stupid enough to press nine anyway?

£20 per minute sounds unlikely. And if you disconnect the other side stays connected? sound even more unlikely.

    Hi,

I know you meant well, Eurorunner, but this is not true: it's a relatively new urban myth: no £20 per min rate exists in the UK, and even if it existed, you can't dial it by pressing 9 from an inbound initiated call.

    yep..your right.

In thinking it through, its not physically possible for a scam like that to work is it?

    disregard thread.

Adam, are you saying that everything one reads on the internet isn't true?!!!!1

While I'm here I'd like to ask for somebodies help. My Great Uncle Fred who died last year in Zalzibar left me €40,000,000 in bearer bonds but unfortunately I can't access it due to the fact that I am Irish and have one leg. What I need is a non-Irish two legged person to go to Zalzibar to collect this money quickly.

If you do this I will give you 40% of the total (THAT'S €20,000,000!!!). I need this in a hurry in order to pay for my Great Uncle Fred's life saving hosiptal treatment. Please contact me soon via this internet address:

    THISISASCAM@hotmail.co.zal

and help save my Great Uncle Fred.

    Thanks,

    amp

I think you need to do your sums again Amp, 40% of €40,000,000.00 is only €16,000,000.00
    :p

I'd hate to see a dispute arise between your good self and your benefactee over a piddling €4,000,000.00

That you always try to cause trouble? Just my opinion.

If you don't have anything constructive to say, why do you bother typing?

    No.

The most expensive calls are to Sat Phones at €6 a minute then Porn Dialler countries such as Tuvalu at over €3 a minute. The most expensive premium rate call is about €3 a minute .

In order to dial any of these you must dial the full number at the dialtone , unless a porn dialler does it for you instead.
