All about control , they allow horrible horrible things to happen to women and children everyday but a social media ban is of upmost importance.

It's so the soon to vote youth don't actually see what's happening in the world and around them.

    It's a Starmer publicity stunt.

That said, I wouldn't put it past any Irish government to follow suit. {Un) social media is here to stay, unfortunately, but it's a matter for individuals and parents in particular to moderate usage.

Honestly I don't think this approach will work TBH. So I'm definitely opposed to it. But there are also some entirely barmy takes. It's more dodging the fact that we're not holding them to account through regulatory means.

I voiced these concerns when Australia introduced the ban. While I support reducing children's access to some aspects of social media, I think we may be overlooking an unintended consequence.

Predators often target situations where children feel they have something to hide. We see it with alcohol, cigarettes and vapes. If social media becomes something a child is using illegally or secretly, and they are approached by a predator online, they may be less likely to tell their parents or another trusted adult for fear of getting into trouble or having their access restricted further.

We've seen similar dynamics in online grooming cases. Predators often exploit secrecy and the fact that a child does not want to admit they were somewhere they were not supposed to be. The more a child feels they have something to hide, the easier that vulnerability can be manipulated.

Any measures aimed at protecting children need to consider not only reducing access, but also ensuring that children feel safe reporting problems when things go wrong. A child who feels they can ask for help without fear is far less vulnerable than one who feels they have to keep everything secret.

Your argument is bolstered by the fact that successive British governments have a questionable at best record with tech projects.

The issue is that Starmer really wants this Digital ID. I'd rather bin both this and the ban and try something different but they're dead set on the ID. It's been spectacularly weak in its sales pitch for it. Last time I checked, we need it because people can't keep track of bills.

If we're going to get it then this social media ban for under-16s makes sense. The Australian version suggests that results will be mixed.

I agree wholeheartedly that something needs to be done, but ignoring it for years and then sticking a plaster over it quickly is not the way at all.

It needs plenty of discussion, research and lots of development so that it is implemented correctly. Parents cannot be allowed to ignore their part in it either.

I feel horrible for the parents that have had children that are badly affected by their online activity, but they are one of the players in this problem too, one of the main players. It is difficult, if not impossible for them to monitor their childrens online activity all of the time, but if they made a good effort they could help curb much of it.

Without proper research and discussion it is a nothing effort.

Is there anything you don't think is conspiracy nonsense, you use that line almost every single time someone puts out an opinion you disagree with.

any ban won't help children and certainly not the children that really need the help.

The only ones who might be helped are ones with parents who will track their activity but they were probably already restricting their access so don't need legislation to hep them. The parents who let the TV and computer raise their children will still allow this to happen and won't make the effort to make sure their kid aren't using other methods to get around the ban, those are the ones who need the help the most.

Fact is the government can't do a better job parenting kids than their parents can and if their parents aren't willing to do the job properly then the government won't be able to fix this.

Another sort of related thing that might feed into parents responsibility. Parents using Dodgy TV boxes, Downloading movies etc from illegal sites. All this behaviour is at best NOT LEGAL but now has become widely accepted and OK to do. I am sure this might pass down to the kids - if my folks are at this kind of illegal thing then whats the matter with me finding ways around things online?

Maybe off the beam here, just a thought that crossed my mind .. lead by example?

There are groups and movements that are being largely ignored by the governments, the same as a kid drawing a moustache is being largely ignored by Meta and the others.

Two that I can think of are EDRI and STOKITI

They are not the only ones, and imho they are already doing a far better job than any of the elected governments.

@ancapailldorcha you are right in saying that much of it is conspiracy talk, but it is such a delicate territory and incredibly profitable, that much of the talk could be true, but can't be spoken about as it paints tinfoil hats on people. Reluctantly, I am bringing up Israel and the US, as they are in charge of most of the tech that does the damage, and I think that (almost) any conspiracy theory involving either of those probably isn't a million miles away from the truth. There are loads of examples.

The difference between conspiracy theory and reality is facts. The user I quoted provided no facts at all.

To be clear, I only support the ban because Labour are going to impose digital ID on us anyway. It might as well be used for some good.

This seems more about control than safety, they get to gather details on everyone using social media. They will be privy to people’s identity, their opinions, their interests, their politics. What will be the next step after that.

All about control and removing anonymity online for everyone dressed up as concern for children. Just waiting for them to try ban VPNs, we are not so far away from Chinese firewall as we like to think. Everyone must suffer because of parents inability to actually parent their kids and tell them No

Chap get a grip 😂I state facts that we're all over the news and I'm a conspiracy theorist 😂 get your head out of the sand it's all about control.

Repackaging silly conspiracy nonsense as facts does not make it so.

So the Muslim grooming gangs being allowed to happen is a conspiracy theory , chap 😂 I'm not replying to you anymore , wake up and take your head out of the sand , it's all about control and you will see sooner rather than later with that attitude for sure

I'd ask for evidence but we both know there's no point. Let's call it there.

It really is though. People love a good conspiracy to make things easier to digest.

Am I pure cynical in thinking theres going to be a cohert of parents who will have the "ara, what harm" type attitude and will sign into whatever social media app on their kids behalf. Keep the kids heads glued to the phone means they're not out getting up to mischief. That kind of mindset.

    But I could be wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,115 ✭✭✭rapul

I don't have to show you proof of what was all over the news for months and still talked about to this day , if you're just uneducated and don't listen to any news then it's cool I understand you're unaware of these horrible horrible incidents.

Let's indeed call it there as what I'm stating is pure proven facts and you're calling me what you are , you are wrong but I'm sure you'll agree with that 😂 madness tbh how some are so unaware of what actually goes on in this world these days .

Reply if you wish but your talking pure sheet and I have facts on my side so...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,115 ✭✭✭rapul

Huh? Why you quoting me , I state facts and people say conspiracy 😂

The British government and its departments are still using X. The idea that they want to ban it by itself makes no sense.
