one of Africa’s top referee’s has been denied entry to the USA and has to return home, his World Cup dream over..

He’s Somali, but was travelling on a diplomatic passport and computer still said no!!

    Shambles..

Maybe he shouldn't be travelling on a diplomatic passport, unless he is also a diplomat travelling on state business.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,558 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

he was issued it by his county to facilitate travel to the USA, as Somalia is currently on pedophile Trump’s travel ban list.. hence the issuing of a diplomatic passport.

He’d have been the 1st ref from Somalia to ref at a World Cup.

What are the issues so far?

    1. Iran can only day trip to US
    2. Iranian officials not allowed in at all
    3. Somalian ref not allowed in
    4. Iraqi player stopped (did he get in?)
    5. Swiss player was delayed
    6. Haitian players blocked from entering LA

I dont believe mentioning this makes me a lefty loon

The Uzbekistan team were also fully searched (sniffer dogs and all) by police upon arriving at the stadium for their friendly against the Netherlands.

Tbf Embolo's delay was due to an existing criminal conviction so that is what delayed his visa.

I dont think that one is necesarily a US clusterfùck problem and more an Embolo himself problem.

at the very least you’d have assumed the Swiss FA would have done some due diligence here and reached out to the US in advance of the team travelling to avoid such a situation…

Maybe the US could act like a functioning country and not a corrupt incompetent racist mess. And FIFA likewise could do what they are supposed to do instead of likewise focusing on money money money.

2 days to go and I have never been as unexcited about a World Cup in my life. And after Qatar that is saying something.

FIFA are doing the best they can to milk their golden goose ambivalent to the fact that they are killing it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,638 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

If FIFA was a private company, they would have been bankrupt under Swiss law in the 2000s.
They had to secure themselves against future World Cup revenues.
That meant they could no longer provide significant contributions to help the host countries and made it a much less attractive prospect for host countries, unless they are oil rich or already have infrastructure.

The money for all those brown envelopes and junkets has to come from somewhere.
This is why we see them chasing World Cups in Qatar, Russia. This is why US cities are charging so much for stuff related to World Cup as FIFA isn't picking up the bills.
South Africa and Brazil both racked up massive debts which would deter other such countries from trying to host.

It's the second world cup in a row that I'm struggling to get interested in. Infantino making Blatter look like a regular guy. It's a mockery playing the tournament in USA, apart from soccer mom's it's a football graveyard, England hasn't have a World Cup tournament since 1966, USA have had 2, it's a nonsense. The best tournaments have been South American and European by a long shot. USA, African and Middle East are rubbish venues for World cups. Just had a quick look at kick off times for us, UK and European viewings, fck me probably 15% are sociable hours.

England won't get a World Cup while IFAB exists in its current form.

Its obviously not right that it comes down to England being bad at politics but sadly that's how it is. Even within UEFA they had to bring countries with them to win the bid despite having more than enough stadiums.

a diplomatic passport is not for getting around the immigration rules of other nations. It has a specific purpose and is not a work visa.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,041 ✭✭✭McFly85

Yeah, Infantino has turned the World Cup into a farce. Diluting the quality of the football with far too many teams and rubbish like advertisement breaks and making the fans an afterthought with insane pricing.

It’s clear he doesn’t care about football one iota outside of its ability to generate money. Rules can be broken if there’s a potential to charge more - the obvious example is Ronaldo getting his ban quashed. And if the organiser feels happy to ignore it’s own rules in the pursuit of profit, it becomes really hard to get invested in as there’s an element of WWE about it.

I would say Infantinos wet dream would be an Argentina v Portugal final, and if he could get away with encouraging the referees to be favourable against those teams then he would absolutely do it.

Maybe Somalia could stop being corrupt too issuing diplomat passports to randomers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,837 ✭✭✭kowloonkev

I never thought there could be someone worse than Blatter, but I guess it's just rotten to the core.

Agreed, his own fault. An Embolo-ism, if you will. (gets coat)

Wouldn't be surprised if the next European World Cup after 2030 is in England (hence Britain & Ireland as they seem to like cohosting these days)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,041 ✭✭✭McFly85

2034 is Saudi Arabia. It’s technically not allowed to be there until 2038 I think, but Infantino shoved 2030 into 3 continents to allow them to host it there sooner.

    Edit: never mind, misread it!

He had a valid visa but just because he was from Somalia he was barred, they just gave him the diplomatic passport to show he was a respected official.

A government adviser in Mogadishu told AFP earlier Monday that Artan had a valid visa for the US.

“Omar Artan is among Africa’s most respected referees and deserves the support of the entire football community,” Ciise Aden Abshir, a senior adviser to Somalia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports and a former national team captain, said.

Abshir said Artan flew back to Istanbul after being refused entry in Miami.

“Denying him entry to the United States and preventing him from officiating scheduled matches harms not only him personally but also undermines football’s commitment to fairness, merit and the spirit of fair play,” Abshir added.

    Moroccan fans denied entry

    https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2026/06/316126/world-cup-2026-us-visa-denials-saga-continues-to-frustrate-moroccan-fans/

Many Moroccan fans are frustrated over US visa denials, as aspirations were high among many supporters who had the ambition to travel to the US to watch the Atlas Lions live during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Azzedine Al Attraoui, the Moroccan National Team Supporters Association President, has conveyed Moroccans’ plea urging FIFA to intervene amid US visa denials.

“Many Moroccan fans have applied for US visas to go cheer on the Atlas Lions, but many have had their visa applications denied,” Al Attraoui told Al Jazeera.

He added that all fans who applied followed FIFA instructions, providing proof of three-match packages, with each package costing around $500 or $1,500.

“They went to the embassy, paid visa fees, but were shocked to be denied visas. Why? No explanation,” he said.

The Moroccan fan emphasized that he and more than 40 fans “who have a passion for football went to apply for visas.”

“We are demanding FIFA and its president, who is in charge of fans and the World Cup, to intervene, as many Moroccan fans want to go and cannot stay behind, as they have responsibilities at home, including their children and jobs.”

One of Trump's corrupt acts dwarfs whatever Somalia is alleged to have done. Of course you turn a blind eye to that too as long.

It wasn't a randomer though was it. It has already been explained to you you have the facts of the case wrong, but still double down on defending racism.

The ban on Somalians is racist. But of course no matter how racist or corrupt the US are in their dealings with World Cup officials, fans, players… they will have defenders here.

So yeah maybe people could stop giving the US a free pass on their racism and FIFA a free pass for ignoring everything the World Cup is supposed to be about in their quest for brown envelopes.

Infantino less than 12 months ago:

“I think it's important to clarify this. There is a lot of misconception out there. Everyone will be welcome in Canada, Mexico and the United States for the FIFA World Cup next year."

This is what happens when you give the World Cup to a corrupt country that doesn't need to sports wash.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,838 ✭✭✭scottser

I firmly believe that this World Cup will be rigged so that Ronaldo gets his winner's medal.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a statement that a Somali national arrived at Miami International Airport from Istanbul on Saturday and was deemed inadmissible due to vetting concerns.

The agency did not elaborate on those concerns, but said the referee underwent routine additional inspection before being denied entry.

Seems harsh on the ref that he gets sent home by FIFA, when there are 13 games in both Canada & Mexico that (presumably) wouldn't have a visa issue.

I know it'd be awkward as presumably the referees/officials are all based in one location in the USA for training & security purposes, but it would surely have been feasible for him to be 4th official at some of the non-USA-based games in the first week.

There is a pre-tournament ref meeting being held in Miami, where ALL the ref's will all work through the new rules and ensure they all fully understand them. I'm sure there would be live in person demonstrations/scenarios played out as part of that conference.. happens before every World Cup.

    Can't replicate that over Zoom

It might have been wise to hold this in Canada.
