It's still to be fully seen what was happening in the dressing room. From Robbo and Konate's comments, a picture is emerging of a squad with a weight on them from Jota's death. The clearest evidence of "lost the dressing room" was Salah… and if he was the lead voice of criticism, he's gone now. Legend of a player but he threw his toys out of the pram twice last season when he should have been leading on and off the pitch. My biggest concern of similar behaviour under Iraola (assuming it's a slow start) would be Szobo. What Iraola needs in the side (and I've made this point before Slot was even gone) is leaders. VVD is the only true leader there who seems to be able to say the right things and keep driving the side in the dying minutes of a game. Nobody last season was doing that. Iraola needs more of that on and off the pitch.

I think the double whammy of the new coach is unproven and the squad is a mess with a lot of work to do is naturally going to affect emotions.

If the summer goes poorly and iraola has to head into a season similar to last, then lower expectations are valid. We know McAllister won't last a long season of hard running. Isak can't carry the burden up front alone, there's no rw, frimpong isn't good enough at rb. Jacquet is unproven etc etc . The squad is much worse than it was 3 weeks ago.

Even if they do buy 7 players he'll have to figure them out but at least that will be a fair chance for him.

Benítez too was the same profile. Much less budget than the big 3 of Real Madrid, Atletico and Barcelona but won La Liga twice with Valencia and nobody outside those 3 have won it since (I know Atletico were second division back then but they became strong again after promotion)

Iraola seems more of a people-person than Slot. I think that will go a long way to getting the ship back on course. Hopefully we can add a good few back-up cheap signings to the squad and at least 2/3 first team players. Our squad has been depleted a lot with the likes of Nunez, Elliott, Kelleher going and not being really replaced. We've been unlucky with injuries too. Bradley, Frimpong, Isak, Ekitike, Alisson that I can think of. So we need more squad players to plug gaps. Also, Iraola's football will be more intense so let's hope players can stay fit. There's a lot to be seen but I think we should all feel a lot more positive. There was no way Slot was going to turn it around and looked like he had alienated players and just didn't have the personality.

Our rivals managers aren't exactly dripping in silverware either. Arteta just won his first since an FA Cup in 2020, Maresca has a Championship and a couple of Micky Mouse trophies with Chelsea. Carrick has done nothing.

Whatever about the stylistic element, which I think itself is overblown, I can't agree with that summary on Alonso as a player at all, which is grossly unfair. The club/ Benitez wanted to move him on, he didn't want to leave at the time. Benitez wanted to replace him with Gareth Barry.

I do agree that FSG marked his card when he decided to go to Real rather than Liverpool.

Alonso has a strong connection to Liverpool and his kid(s) were born in the city. Obviously his taking the reigns at Chelsea has 'complicated' matters.

Basically, I'm not happy for Alonso's record or legacy to be unfairly 'tarnished' or diminished. Some quotes from him from a quick Google search:

    • "Liverpool has a mystique, a history, a charm that everyone who loves football gets hooked on. I was hooked with Anfield."
    • "I still feel I have a special connection with Liverpool fans. I will always be grateful to Liverpool. It is a very special club."
    • "Even after almost 20 years, they ask for that night, for that miracle [Istanbul]. And for sure, that was the beginning of something great."
    • "I cannot understand my career without Liverpool. My son was born in Liverpool, he's always asking to go back to Anfield."
    • "It was strange because I thought I'd feel at home in Madrid due to it being my country but compared to Liverpool it wasn't. Liverpool is like my second home."
    • "When Liverpool grips you, it grips you for life."

Anyway, RE: Ariola, I'm firmly on the hype train, I think he will be brilliant, and revitalise the club. I'm very excited for what's to come.

Normally I wouldn't be optimistic about a manager coming from a so called smaller club in PL (record is horrendous in fact across the board) but this a guy who lost his 3 best defenders in summer 2025 window, lost his best forward in January and still managed an 18 match unbeaten run which included defeats of Liverpool and Arsenal and only lost 7 times all season (3rd best record in the league) to finish a kick of the ball behind Liverpool in 6th.

I never saw those before. He obviously has a real connection with the club and the city.

Why on earth didn't he jump at the opportunity to manage Liverpool when it was presented to him?

Ugh. Rotten. Can't help but feel this could have been averted. Likewise Konate leaving.

Andy is on the decline. He won't be able to play 90 minutes twice a week at the level he could 3 years ago. He's signing for the club that finished 17th two years running. That's his level now. He'll be retired within 3 years. It's time for us to move on. I wish him well.

He'll be going to Celtic after and winning titles til he's near 40

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,307 ✭✭✭dogbert27

Yeah, I think he wanted one last pay day contract.

Will probably go to Celtic in 2 years time for a small fee.

If nothing else it shows the ambition Spurs have (or lack of more to the point).

Even with fading legs, Robertson is still better than many starting LBs in the league, and he's still more than capable of putting in solid performances next season. He's 32, not 35. I'm not convinced he's dropped off quite so much as seems to be the general consensus.

A shrewd buy for them in my view. A Milner type character that brings buckets of experience, provides leadership, and will drive up standards for them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,028 ✭✭✭SodiumCooled

I agree on his ability and I would have been much happier keeping him but he is not the purchase of a team with ambitions for any serious challenge or building something - a kerkez like singing would be the type of move I’d expect of a team looking to build something.

Milner was only 29 joining us and could be argued he was still in his peak rather than in decline.

Spurs aren't going to be making any serious challenges next year. They were very lucky not to be relegated. They need to stabilise their PL status, which I imagine is their ambition for next year, and for that they need good characters. They can build from there in subsequent seasons.

So FSG felt Alonso wasn't a good fit stylistically, yet he turned us down when Klopp left! That doesn't make sense; if FSG didn't think he was a good fit, it follows that there wasn't any offer for Alonso to turn down in the first place. if , however, there was an offer, then the " good fit " excuse doesn't hold water,! Also Alonso stayed at BL, so wasn't available when we needed a replacement for Klopp.

If Alonso did indeed turn down an offer previously ( which he was entitled to do) and this ruled him out of the running to replace Slot then that's a bit shortsighted by the club. We don't know what really happened, whether there was ever any offer or if Alonso was ever considered ( either to replace Klopp or Slot). I don't like this bashing of Alonso just because he is now Chelsea manager, and I wouldn't rule him out of becoming Liverpool manager/ head coach down the line. Anyway, hopefully Iraola works out and we don't need to look for a new manager/ head coach for a few years yet!

Agree with this, no matter who got it, there would be a risk, even Enrique, would he be able to cope with the demands of the EPL, which is completely different to what he has experienced before with the Spanish and French leagues. Almost every elite manager has had to start off with smaller clubs before they get their break with a bigger team, which then enables them to compete for silverware.

Iraola might well do a better job than Slot, but, still not win anything; he might play a better brand of football, get the best out of the squad available to him and develop younger players, but, might end up winning nothing. Success can't be judged solely on silverware, making the most of what's available to him is more important, if he does that, it's likely silverware will follow.

I would say he is not a good fit stylistically for what they want post Slot. Post Klopp I'm sure they would have been interested but he made himself unavailable for discussions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,767 ✭✭✭Girly Gal

Spurs signed him for his experience and leadership, which is sorely lacking at Spurs. They won't be mounting any title challenge and players with ambitions won't be signing for Spurs right now. They need to rebuild the club, Robertson will help raise standards and ensure they don't drop, which is exactly what Spurs need right now, in 18 to 24 months, he'll likely be surplus to requirements there. It suits both player and club.

I'd sell him alright, for £250m. We really must have ruffled a few feathers at Bayern the last few summers with players they were interested in picking us over them.

I don’t believe they were ever interested in Alonso or made any offer for him to turn down. It’s just rumours and paper talk.

And it can be true that he effectively 'turned them down' without an offer made. I would guess there was a tentative reach-out for a chat, followed by his public declaration that he wasn't going to anyone, and wanted to manage Leverkusen in the Champions League the following season.

I don't at all buy that him not beating down their door to join 2 years ago has anything to do with the current decision making. These weird petty motivations always get thrown onto the more tabloidy stories, making out that everyone in football thinks and acts like a over-emotional child.
