How good is Lewis Hall? Ticks two positions the club need to buy in but has he actually played much at senior level in midfield.

    • Sandro Tonali admired but likely too expensive (~£100m).

so of the 3 marquee CM signings, 2 are too expensive and the other was a pipe dream. disappointing.

if the budget for CM is 150, i'd rather 1 for 100, 1 for 50, and a loan/free transfer. we need a top signing that will be absolutely good enough and ready to go right away.

TBH I would be happy with Ederson, Fernandes and Scott.
Think Fernandes and Scott have the potential to be too huge midfield talents in the next couple of years - and I'd be happy to see us role the dice on it.

Risky to a point. Ederson never played in Premier league is a risk but Scott and Fernandes showed they can play Premier league football at young age to a high standard , def would take a punt on both . An off form baleba would be bigger risk

News on United's interest in Baleba has gone very quiet. I kind of hope it stays that way. My news feed is pointing out the Olympique Marseilles are in breach of their 2022 FFP settlement after posting consecutive annual losses since signing it. Their Europa League spot is in jeopardy if they don't get back on track, so It's likely that Greenwood will be out the door and we'll get a few bob from his move.

Sandro Tonali is not a £100m player. Having a go at the club for not spending a ridiculous amount on him seems contrary to all the complaints about overspending on average players over the past decade.

Ederson, 1 of Fernandes, Wharton or Scott, plus 1 other CM instantly improves our options. We already have our £100m midfielder, its Kobbie. We are buying players to compliment and work alongside him

it would be a solid midfield buying Summer to get those 3.Ugarte lacks something that all 3 possess-the ability to find a teammate over 10 yards+ when under pressure.

He was such a poor signing and for 50m too!

IMO Tonali would be a major risk given his recent past with gambling,a leopard often doesn’t change his spots and being a young player with an almost unlimited revenue source and the word gambling do not go well together.

Agree with Ederson, Fernandes and Scott. very young too so loads of potential for growth - 2 proven PL who can slot in straight away and are up for the physicality.

WH paid 40 for fernandes, so could get him for 60 probably - maybe with a few adds on on top. They will play hard ball, but we might get lucky if nobody else is interested

I don't see us buying any 100m players, anywhere. Radcliffe stated he wants to buy the next stars, not the established ones.

I'm a-ok with that. Buy hungry players on the way up, we see that in who they have bought already.

The whole point of having all these suits involved in recruitment is to find those gems, Lammens and Dorgu have each probably trebled in value, Sesko, Cunha and MBeumo have all enhanced their reputations.

Sure I could suggest Elliot Anderson myself just from watching Match of the Day on a Saturday night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 49,513 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

    Yes.

And, imo, we need to take risks.

Anderson isn't coming (and is arguably a risk at the fee/wages).
    Tchoumeni is highly unlikely.

So assuming Ederson is basically a done deal, I would be looking at what players do we think are gonna be the Anderson guy next summer.

If the 'sure' things aren't there to be got, what is the alternative?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 49,513 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

I think if Anderson said he would come to us on like 250k and Forest said they would sell for 100m, the deal would be done tomorrow.

Sure we want to sign players before they get to that level, but would be silly to ignore them once they have.

if it is alex sccott, they better move quick cos iraola will want him at liverpool.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,100 ✭✭✭✭johnnyryan89

INEOS will splash £100M on someone if they tick the boxes and are achievable. Anderson you've unfortunately got City in for him so the financial package on offer to him from City is going to be huge. Even if Forest agreed to £100M you'll probably have to offer him Casemiro wages.

Tonali massive questions with the gambling stuff. Plus Newcastle have a 3+1 on his contract so he's locked down for the next four years.

They've spent big sums of money on potential (Sesko, York), and they've spent big sums of money on mid 20s PL proven players from lower half PL club (Cunha, Mbeumo).

    They'll 100% splash £100M on a player if possible

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,408 ✭✭✭✭FourFourRED

It does depend on squad needs and money available - if both of those were in better shape, you would get Anderson if you could, even if it was £100m. Just because it’s obvious in terms of how good he is, it’s no reason to avoid him because he’s £100m. He is hungry and on the way up too..

You mention Sesko, Mbeumo and Cunha but the latter two are also players you would see on MOTD and easily see they’re good enough for Man United. Sesko isn’t some uncovered gem either, he has been well known for years. None of these players were cheap either.

Lammens (especially) and Dorgu are definitely more niche and have been surprisingly good, even if there is a question mark over Dorgu’s best position and a very small one over whether or not Lammens in a full season in all comps will continue to be good enough (hopefully he will be!)

The reality is - you’re not going to be able to solely rely on unearthing hidden talent as your transfer policy if you are going to win the league. It will be a mix of both (which we’re seeing now). Having a cap on wages is smart, but to throw a cap on transfer fees just for the sake of it - not as smart.

I believe it's wages that's the big stumbling block for Anderson. Like look at what Guehi supposedly gets at City and it's mental money. Rodri the only one left from the trio that included KDB and Silva. And he's only got a year left on his deal and could leave. They'll be throwing a small fortune wage wise at someone like Anderson to lead their midfield for the next decade.

I think and hope that Ineos have decided to go for lower profile signings and let other clubs pay the huge fees that put immediate pressure and scrutiny on new signings (×10 if it's United).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,821 ✭✭✭Charlie69

Very low risk in my opinion…. Fernandes can do it all and Scott’s an absolute sure thing for me. If got those two I’d be absolutely delighted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,100 ✭✭✭✭johnnyryan89

They'd end up signing no one then or signings like Heaven. Everyone is under immediate pressure and scrutiny at United if your being bought to start or big potential player.

Delighted with this personally. £35m for a player that the majority of the top clubs in Europe have looked at over the past couple of years. Also Ornstein saying Ederson prioritised Utd above all others and that made the deal easier. A top CM that wants to be at Utd and its not costing a fortune.

I don't think its a case of going for lower profile signings is a good thing in itself. It is a necessity. The squad has huge gaps in it - just 1 good striker, 1 good midfielder, no out and out left winger, no backup goalkeeper, question marks over left back, centre back and to some extent right back. Ideally the club would sign 7 or 8 players this summer, just to be confident of having a good first 11 and a subs bench that can positively impact a premier league game. In terms of setting ambitious but realistic targets, if United manage to finish in the top 4 next season it will be only the second time United have done that back to back in 14 seasons. United does not routinely finish every season in the top 4.

With just 250m to spend and 7 or 8 slots to fill to build a squad that finishes in the top 4, we're relying a lot on the recruitment team earning their wages by identifying more signings like Lammens. We're just not in a position to be blowing 40% of the transfer budget on a single player whatever way we might dress it up as a choice.

If this summer goes fantastically well, we might get to next summer where we have 20+ good enough players for the CL in or entering their peak years and are just looking to add 1 or 2 world class players each year.

Good stuff, now onto the second signing. See if it can be done before World Cup

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 9,817 ✭✭✭Backstreet Moyes

Having watched a few YouTube videos and I know YouTube.

He does seem to have a skill set that we are lacking.

He is all energy and something that Kobie is not really which should compliment him.

In saying that we need three midfielders and I hope he is the low key signing of the three.

Supposedly wanted United like Cunha and Mbuemo which is what you like to hear.

No world cup is also a huge bonus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,202 ✭✭✭Robson99

The key bit being that he is no 3 of 3. Hopefully Fernandes is next.. really think he has a massive ceiling...

Would really love Tchouameni as our no 1. Just think we need someone who is strong in the air on the pitch as well as just our 2 cbs and he fits the bill

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 9,817 ✭✭✭Backstreet Moyes

I think Fernandes will be Arsenal bound unless he wants to play for United.

He was the best player on the pitch when West Ham played Arsenal a few weeks ago.

Scott is the one I really want but you would imagine if he moves it will now be Liverpool.

I really don't want Tchouameni because it feels like the Woodward way.

Huge money and huge wages on a player who would likely only go from Madrid to United for the money.

If we are going to spend big then Anderson although he is probably bound for City.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,782 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

According to Rob Dawson at ESPN we've moved onto Fernandes and have contacted West Ham.

I saw him described on Reddit as Fred, but better - Frederson if you will.

That was in The Athlethic piece yesterday. Discussions with West Ham have already begun about a price
