It really is a shame it unravelled so quickly, a decent man. Will always be grateful that he gave the club and fans the opportunity to celebrate winning a title properly as 2020 was ruined with covid. I think it's probably a relief to him that it's all over as this season was extremely difficult for him, I wish him all the best for the future.

I see BBC reporting that James Milner is hanging up his boots now that his contract is finished at Brighton.
What an absolute modern day pro, a super footballer with a brilliant attitude throughout his career. Hope to see him as a pundit, though it might not be his style, maybe see him coaching in the future. . Best of luck to him anyway.

It's unlikely but I'd love to see him back on the staff at Liverpool. There would be no reduction in standards on his watch anyway. Think he would make a great coach somewhere.

What a legend milner was, only a few months ago he was outrunning and schooling our midfield the day Brighton beat us with wellbeck getting a hat trick, god im glad this season is over, we were fair bad in lots of matches

Surprised Milner is retiring as he seemed to have a resurgence this season, thought he might stay on another season. An amazing pro, a great example to to all young players coming through. Wouldn't be a bad idea for whoever takes over to bring him in as part of the backroom team.

Poor form from the club if true, I definitely think they could have handled Slot's sacking better, they dragged it on way too long when they probably knew from a while out what they were likely to do.

Yeah I'd have thought he'll sit pretty in his nice well paid made up job until the German national team comes knocking. International football would seem ideal for him at the stage he's at, he can get that hit from coaching but only have to do it intermittently, leaving good pockets of time for life. And given his talent at man motivation, which i reckon is at least 60% / 70% of the international job, I'd say he'll be a roaring success when the time comes

I don't think they need to show they can manage a team of inferior players. Despite how bad we've been this season we do not have a team of inferior players. Enrique managed a big transition from individual superstars to a team that works for eachother. Yes there's some brilliant players in there but I think he gets more out of them than most managers would. Their best players Dembele and Vitinha weren't massive transfer fees and had question marks over them.

We see the best version of PSG in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

A lot of their best players have limited starts in Ligue 1 to have them fresh for the latter stages of Europe. The question marks that we have about Iraola handling 3 games a week are just as valid for Enrique to be fair.

Nothing in Europe prepares you for the grind of English football in my opinion.

I'd love to see Milner back at the club in a coaching role.

Personally I felt he had strong integrity, and I didn't have an issue so much his interactions with the press and direct way of speaking etc.

I actually think him leaving now will afford him much better opportunities in the future rather than it getting dragged out into a poor start next season. Winning the league and then getting champion's league, even though performance was poor, I think will stand to him when other clubs look at his record. Most foreign clubs don't pay attention too much to the points totals as much as the position. Germany and Italy I think would have a number of CL level clubs that would look at him imo, and he always can go back to the Netherlands with no issue. Wish him all the best.

I'd prefer to see Thiago back, he's got good experience now and I think has left Barcelona

Tbf I think if a club is going to appoint a head coach or manager they will do more than a surface level scan of his credentials, they will dig a little deeper into how his last jobs went, how he sets up a team etc. Appointing a head coach is a massive decision for any club so everything has to be taken into account. Slot's time at Liverpool means he has a high profile, so this means he will be on clubs radar, but, it doesn't necessarily mean he'll just walk into a job.

Years ago it was also questioned whether playing lesser teams in Ligue 1 all season harmed PSG's chances.

I'm not saying they aren't getting a good benefit from the resting but Id actually be nervous about rythem and match fitness if some of our players started ad rarely in the league as theirs do

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,558 ✭✭✭jesuisjuste

I totally agree, I more mean that Slot, after winning the premier league, would have had an elite level profile, similar to Alonso after he won with Leverkusen. But last season would have dropped his profile a far bit, however I think if he had stayed on longer it was a risk it would drop significantly more. Having one semi-poor season should be recoverable for him, similar to how Alonso was still in high demand after his Real stint.

Overall Slot still has the PL and his time in Netherlands to fall back on, and when there are not a lot of good managers out there currently this will still serve him well imo. The likes of a Napoli, Roma, AC, Leverkusen, Dortmund etc. I think would all at least consider him, if not hire him.

According to David lynch on the Anfield Index podcast,an ex player is going to be part of the coaching staff, Milner or Thiago maybe?

I’ve seen Thiago mentioned somewhere too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,489 ✭✭✭.red.

After seeing Thiago in the legends game I'd be on for him with a coaching role and also getting a squad number which I know, won't happen.

He was the best player on the pitch that day. Closest thing to a Jan Molby I've seen in a red shirt. The lad could stand in the centre circle and get man of the match.

Slots statement is the most media astute piece he has done in a long while. After our bad run in the first half of the season, I gave him til the end of Jan to turn things around. And "turning things around" didn't necessarily mean points on the board, it meant showing to us that there was some semblance of an approach with the team that would work long term. It didn't materialise. I'd be happy with Iraola, Bournemouth were one of the best teams to watch in Europe under him. Roll on next season

I presume all statements these days are produced by a professional pr company and read over by solicitors before they are published?

No matter the process, plenty of managers leave clubs without making particularly nice thoughtful sounding statements - especially when sacked - so the fact he did it is to be commended.

And to be honest, it sounds exactly like he spoke anyway… always really liked him as a person, came across to me as a really nice thoughtful kind balanced fella. Just a good guy. Would've loved it to have worked out for him, but it's all probably for the best, himself included. He's in a great position now to get into nigh on any job, bar the top 10 or 15 or so in the world. With any bit of distance, I think "Won the Eredivisie, won the Premier League, had a disappointing underperforming (but still champions league achieving) second season after a much loved player died" will see him being given another shot at a pretty big gig.

Kevin Keegan very sick with stage 4 cancer - wishing him the best of luck.

I keep hearing things like "Will Iraola be able to handle playing 3 games a week" etc. And this "3 games a week" crap has become common parlance but I'm curious how this came about cos Liverpool don't play 3 games a week. No professional football team in the world plays 3 games a week for the entire season or even a part of the season.

Bournemouth play 1 game a week as standard and will occasionally play 2 games a week with cup competitions and whatnot whereas Liverpool might generally play 2 games a week more often than just 1 throughout the course of the season. We play a game at the weekend and a midweek game. Due to TV scheduling we occasionally end up playing on a Sunday then Tuesday or wednesday followed by a game on Saturday.

This means we will play 3 games in that paticular 7 day period every now and again, due to TV. But we do not "play 3 games a week" over the course of the season. We play 2.

that’s kind of just semantics though isn’t it? Like, yeah, you’re right, it’s twice a week most weeks, weekend and midweek - but the point is that after a weird curtailed preseason there is only a day or so of proper training between recovery and prep days, which is bound to be a bit tricky for a manager to get a quite specific and complicated game plan in place.

It’ll be a new challenge for him to try to get his plan across with such a staccato rhythm to training time.

U remember Welbeck getting a hat trick in a game Brighton beat us 2-1 🤔

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,963 ✭✭✭Dr Robert

12-20 extra games a season depending on how we get on in the cups.

Some strike by Isak for Sweden

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,308 ✭✭✭✭banie01

Really was, he picked up the ball from a LW position too 🤔
That's one problem sorted for next season already then 😉😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,307 ✭✭✭dogbert27

What are the odds on him being out for the 26/27 season after playing a blinder for Sweden for the whole of the World Cup?!

Really can't say I knew a lot about Iraola but having read a few articles and watched a few interviews, excitement is building he could be the guy to bring proper front foot attacking football back to Liverpool.
