I've said all along Dublin would win leinster this year. Certainly cant be ruled out for an AI either

Louth very poor today but in fairness they haven't beaten a genuine top team in Championship or league football in years, They really need to get out of Division 2 to improve.

yeah they set such a high standard a few years ago that they look normal now , confidance is the biggest issue id say going on the league and the wicklow game with the younger lads , costello and con are still outragous players in fairness

fantastic game , but monaghan are the toughest team in the county , they have pulled off some massive results in the last number of years tonight was anonther , whoever in the NFL decided rory beggin wasnt good enough for a profesional contract should be fired

I was at that game , that point from Fitz was ridiculous, think it was bigger and further out than the one today but my memory could be wrong; was awhile ago.

Ya Fitz's was on the sideline at the 45m line, McCarrins was a fine score under pressure it was on the 14 meter line, I have seen a fair few similar scored and under pressure as well.

Fitz's was different gravy with the Dublin mentor ear wagging him

Shocked that my local, a big Dublin suburban group pub, could not show the Dublin Louth match as they did not have GAAGo subscription. Is this common?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 22,614 ✭✭✭✭Bass Reeves

Not surprised, went into many a suburban pub on AI night and they would not show the SG

That's an unreal kick from mccarron considering the situation.

Maurice Fitz was technically superior but what was the score at the time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,434 ✭✭✭MacDanger

Fair play to the ref for having the sense to recognise his mistake, a lot wouldn't have

There's very little interest in county level GAA in Dublin. It'd be a rugby/soccer stronghold in terms of viewing in the pub at least.

1.5M population and only a few thousand took the short trip to Portlaoise in a match that was supposed to be competitive. If that few fans actually go I can't imagine a massive demand in Dublin pubs. The last few years crowds have been paltry from the capital. Even the hurling is terrible. Last year cork brought around 70k to Dublin and Dublin had about 10k fans even after beating Limerick.

Paddy Power betting odds Leinster outright.

    Dublin 1/7

    Kildare 8/1

    Westmeath 13/1

I can't imagine many bothering from WM or Kildare to watch Dublin win something like their 20th Leinster in 22 years. I can't imagine many bothering from Dublin for a home final either. The GAA should just play it in Portlaoise again and save croker for the unlikely event two counties outside the capital make the final.

I'm predicting Dublin Leinster winning margins increase over the coming year's Vs this season and last. Support will quickly evaporate after meath momentarily revived the spectacle last year.

What a glorious province Ulster has become. Completely stolen Leinster's thunder from the 90's-00's.

Jesus the provincial championships have been brilliant this year. Shock wins for down and monaghan in ulster, westmeath beating meath in leinster as well as leitrim and wicklow putting it up to Galway and Dublin.

Armagh won't have a better chance of winning the ulster they've been so close to

Similar situation it was an AI QF, Dublin were a point up, time was up. Kerry won a sideline ball. Maurice Fitzgearld was only on the pitch a few minites, 2001 was thevyear

    What is the rule?

I thought this years version of the hooter was making it equivalent to the old refs final whistle..…ie, game over immediately??

To be honest, I think the hooter was a solution looking for a problem. We're guaranteed to have high profile knockout games this summer decided by this farce of a new rule that nobody except the FRC asked for.

Another question about the hooter rule that no-one seems to be able to answer....does the game finish with the start of the hooter sound, or the end of the sound? There's usually a 2 or 3 second difference and that was the difference between Kerry getting their first win of the league in Killarney this year, rather than a draw that it should have been.

Leave the ref blow the final whistle and do away with all this needless controversy!

Referees used to get accused of not playing enough additional time, or playing too much. Or when there were replays, playing for a draw so that the GAA would have another big pay day. There was no need for those controversies, but people created them anyway.

At least now their creation of additonal time by stopping the clock during breaks in play goes largely unnoticed and does not lead to as much controversy. Up until now anyway. There is not much that can go wrong with a clock and hooter system, as shown by its use in ladies football for many years. But people will still try to create controversies, even if it means using the "toenail" offside VAR type arguments.

The rules regarding the hooter are fairly clear. If there is a free kick or sideline ball conceeded before the hooter sounds they are to be taken

What hapoened in the Kerry V Roscommon is that the kerry player had kicked the ball before the hooter sounded and the ball went over the bar after the hooter souned. That is covered in the rules as well and the score is given.

I perferred the old hooter rule where pay continued until the ball went out of play without conceding a free

So from the rules how many seconds after the hooter sounds can a ball can be caught and kicked over the bar or into the goal?

It's needless ambiguity that the hooter brings. I agree, if you have to have the hooter, use last year's rule. Its much clearer.

All the hooter has done is solve one problem while creating two new ones.

    Zero seconds.

They had it perfect last year.

Why oh why did they mess with it..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,212 ✭✭✭Neddyusa

In that case, Bass post above is wrong and Kerry shouldn't have won that game as the ball crossed the bar at least 3 seconds after the hooter sounded.

And that ambiguity is even before you look at why the clock is stopped for some kickouts and not others, some frees and not others, or why the stadium clock, TV clock and refs clock can show three different times.

    It's as clear as mud.

Its a whole needless can of worms ready to be opened at the first tight finish to a knockout game.

The ball was kicked before the hooter sounded in the Kerry vs Roscommon game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,212 ✭✭✭Neddyusa

The hooter went just as O'Shea kicked his free. That fee dropped short. Wasn't a point. Hooter went before Kennedy, who scored the point, even caught the ball.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,152 ✭✭✭CrabRevolution

You said "how many seconds after the hooter sounds can a ball can be caught and kicked over the bar or into the goal", which is not what happened in the Kerry-Roscommon game at all.

In the Kerry-Roscommon game, a player fisted the ball (barely) before the hooter went, the hooter sounded while the ball was in flight, then the ball went over the bar. Nobody touched the ball after it was struck.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,212 ✭✭✭Neddyusa

If the game ends as soon as the hooter sounds, the game was over before Kennedy caught the ball. Go back and watch/ listen to it. The fact the new hooter rule introduced this ambiguity creates totally unnecessary controversy.

I wasnt a huge fan of the 2025 hooter rule, because a game could extend for a long time with a team holding possession. But at least it was better than the current rule, as it was clear that once the ball was dead, the game was finished.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,643 ✭✭✭✭yabadabado

    No it didnt .

Tom Kennedy caught it and then punched it just as the hooter went.

I was disgusted at the time but in hindsight looks to be the right call.

Westmeath into just their 6th ever final. Realistically they've no chance against Dublin, especially in croke park.

On a positive note, good support today especially from Westmeath fans. Can't say the same regarding yesterday's fixture in Portlaoise which is a sad reflection on the apathy currently plaguing Dublin support for the national games.

The big news from today is Westmeath have qualified for the AI series. Fair play to them.
