Wouldn't in the least be surprised if he just went back to Bilbao.

Moyes to United, and Everton wasn't a particularly well run club at the time. Hodgson to Liverpool. There's loads of examples.

The skillset to do well on a low budget is not necessarily the same as for a huge club where you're under constant scrutiny and pressure, and expected to win things.

I don't think the issue at Real Madrid is any great mystery, they have too many players who need to be "indulged".
Too many players who need to be the main man and not enough supporting cast to make it a cohesive team.

They were a much tighter team 2 seasons ago. Adding in Mbappe and Trent has unbalanced them.
Someone has to do the hard work

It's a fair point, Coaches who do well at smaller clubs may struggle under scrutiny, with bigger budget etc. But it's not necessarily the rule. And there are also examples where such Coaches did really well.

Poch from Southampton to Spurs (when they were expecting Top 4 and CL). Then on to PSG.

Conte went from Siena to Juventus. On to Chelsea, Inter and more.

Tuchel from Mainz to Dortmund, PSG, etc.

Real have made some unusual appointments before, like Arbeloa and Solari. So honestly nothing would surprise me as to who they go for next

Football men still sticking with Trent is a problem narrative even with Liverpool’s collapse this season or is it more nuanced than I’m giving you credit for?

Can Poch at Spurs be termed as anything less than a success ? How did they do before and after him ?

Spurs to a champions League final isn't something to be sniffed at

did anyone find out what they were whinging about? I'm half presuming its that they wanted a chance to score 2 goals, 5 minutes into what was 4 minutes of injuiry time but the ref didnt allow a restart.

They hardly were complaining about the second yellow were they? They are allegedly cheated out of a win, despite Real scoring from a free where there was literally no contact, and somehow VAR couldnt pull that up, but regardless, its a massive refereeing decision in favour of Real/ blatant cheating

Kawabunga indeed got a second yellow, for the second year in a row in the quarters for petulance timewasting, but Vini jr should have got one for his antics against Kimmich, and as for Rüdiger…. jesus. There was a number of frees if not yellow cards he should have gotten but the ref let things flow.

On the positive, if ever theres a ref needed for hurling games wherever that ref comes from, he'd be your man.

slight tangent, but after the final whistle, all but one of the Real players dissappeared away off, the only one that remained and went straight over to thank their fans for travelling a 4000km round trip was Vini Jr. of all people.

Maybe the Tv cameras didnt show that but I was near the away end on Wednesday in the Allianz arena and it was bizarre to see a lad who isnt always sporting to be the standout figure of the team

I'm not sure what you mean?

I think Liverpool would be in a very similar situation this year with or without Trent.
Their biggest issue at the moment is the manager and his poor use of the squad. Trent ain't saving that.

For Real the point I'm making is -

Mbappe - great player but needs to be accommodated for

Vini Jnr - great player but needs to be accommodated for

Trent - great player but needs to be accommodated for

Jude - great player but needs to be accommodated for

That's 4 out of your starting 11 that are great players but you need to accommodate for. It's very hard to setup a team to get the best from all 4 while also being defensively solid enough that when you come up against another great team you are able to stay in the game.

If you go back 2 years ago - Jude was at the top of a 4 man midfield. He was protected and also given room to be the main man, to move find space and attack the goal. The frontline also allowed him to get up as they split wider at times.

Vini Jnr was paired up front with Rodrygo who worked his arse off making runs and tracking back. If Vini didn't track there was enough players in the team who would do it, and they could turn the ball over and get it back to the likes of Vini quickly.

If you look at them now Vini Jnr and Mbappe are looking at each other and neither is going to track a player back. So there is no real press from up top.

Then you are into midfield where Jude is deeper in midfield with less protection - he had Guler, Diaz and Valverde in there with him midweek. That's not a midfield. You are asking Jude to do a job he isn't world class at instead of getting him to do the job he is world class at.

Trent is in the team over Carvajal and needs to be accommodated a lot more than Carvajal needed to, Trent isn't going to run the line and keep you compact defensively if you are turned over. If you want to get the best from Trent you need to have cover around him so he can attack, that is his strength. Covering for others is not.

I just don't think they can fit the 4 into the 1 team. The biggest issue is Vini Jnr and Mbappe for me. Very similar to what Mbappe was part of at PSG - big names but no player to do the extra work to support. That has knock-on effects down the team, midfield and defence is under extra pressure as a result.

They could solve it, but they'll need to sell 1 of Mbappe or Vini to do it in my view.

Correct, he definitely was a success at Spurs. And this is the point I was making.

He made that leap from a much smaller club, with smaller budget, less expectation, etc and brought success to a bigger club. It can happen.

fair enough, I agree with much of the analysis and have said similar about accommodating players in this thread. They need to sell Vinicius but that’s very difficult.

I dont personally believe Liverpool would be 5th or doing things like getting thrashed at city in the cup or unable to score a goal vs PSG over a tie if they still had Trent. I think Bradley and Frimpong are huge downgrades in what they bring.

He's a massive loss in attack for sure. though on the PSG point, they did only score the one goal across a two legged tie last year with him in the side, and he played no part in that (Alisson long punt to Darwin, who passed to Elliott to finish).

I'm not sure that Trent would've made a big difference to the bigger structural failures in certain games, like stopping that barrage against City (Trent played his part in plenty of very bad defeats too after all), but on the whole over the season I think the team would've been a lot better off creatively with him in it. It's the draws or late defeats against poor/mediocre sides he'd have helped with particularly.

he got injured in that game, I know it was the 70th minute but plenty of moments in a football game between the 70th and the 90th (or 120th)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 36,760 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

He got injured in the other, second, game. I wouldn't say he offered so much in the preceding 160 minutes to suggest he was going to be the difference with any degree of certainty. I agree he'd have made a big difference on the whole season, but pointing to individual games is a bit moot, given there's just no real factual basis to it. I just don't think you can look at a game and say "Trent would've changed that result" with any degree of certainty, given that there's plenty of actual games he did play, where we lost. I'd always rather have him, for sure, but he's not superman.

well we agree pretty much. The thread we’re on means points have to be framed.

Speaking of points, and in a week where no less than 4 Spanish sides got eliminated from Europe, here is the UEFA standings relative to which country gets a 5th place behind, already home and hosed England.

    image.png

Germany have Bayern and Freiburg, Spain have Atletico and Rayo Vallecano.

Technically Spain have gathered more points than Germany but the above scores are averages, as your overall score gets divided by the numbers of teams you had in Europe 8 vs 7, here.

I see Pestrianni has received a 6 match ban with 3 of it suspended for homophobic language to Vini Jr. It was claimed he had racially abused him.

This is Opta, but as a pie-chart. I feel that PSG are being totally under-rated here. This does add up to 100% unlike some of my previous botch jobs!

    I know. You're right.

I would have given them a bigger piece of pie, even if only to fit their name in a bit better :)

For me PSG 36, Bayern 24, Arsenal 25 and Atletico 15.

It's based off the fact Arsenal are statistically most likely to make the final. Will look very different when we know the final two. PSG would certainly be favourites.

No free to air for the semi final just feels so wrong.

Have to say i was delighted this was on Prime. No crap Virgin media picture, no Maloney and Whelan on RTE. Picture is excellent, they just do football coverage really well.

Is Harry Kane ok? Gone down like hes been shot twice already this match. Surprised hes able to walk on that ankle.

    This is fantastic football

Lovely equaliser. Lads had no interest passing to Dembele after whatever his effort was moments before

Neither side appear to have a midfield.
