The question isn't who could've filled in at RB better than dom, it's who could have played there to allow Dom play in a much more important position.

Szobo's obviously a brilliant fullback, just as basically any very good box-to-box midfielder will be a top quality fulllback (Gerrard, Essien, Kante, Vieira etc would've all been world class fullbacks) — but you don't play them there because they can dictate games more effectively from the middle in a way lesser players can't. I'd have rathered whoever our spare midfielder was on any given day (largely Jones) played there instead to allow our best to play where it matters.

There’s loads of reasons outside Slots control for the poor season we’re having. Jotas death, key players leaving, the fall off of performances from the likes of Salah and MacAllister, and several long term injuries.

I don’t think you can discount the fact that we’re not the only team struggling to consistently pick up points this year either - the league has gotten physically tougher and more attritional, which several teams are struggling with adjusting to. In fact, there’s no team that’s been a complete standout this season. Arsenal have had a noticeable dropoff since January, they are still solid defensively but really struggle for goals, city are only getting their act together now.

The big negatives for me are that the football he has the team playing is ineffective as well as being awful to watch as well as his in game management. The team is slow and ponderous, and when it doesn’t go well he has no ideas apart from throwing on more forwards if we’re losing or more defenders if we’re winning, and it almost never works. Even if the team looked more energetic or had a bit more direction, I would be totally fine with him having another season.

As it is, I would have a huge question mark over his ability to motivate this team next season. But there are very few managers out there that fit the bill - Alonso possibly but it feels more like an emotional call rather than a logical one. I could see the club giving him one more season and I expect us to be busy enough in the transfer market - but he’ll be under huge pressure to show some improvement from the very start.

It’s a tough ask given our squad.

At least he has tried different formations to find solutions.

If Jones was the only other option then I’d prefer Dom at RB. If he had played Jones more often and it didn’t work he would have been slated for not putting Dom in there.

Slot has been dealt a horrible hand this season and it’s kinda damned if you do or damned if you don’t.

Amorim was slammed for not adapting and Slot has been slammed for trying different formations (amongst other things I know).

I like Slot. I like his honesty. I like his composure. I like that he doesn’t spend time on the sidelines going mental like an Arteta or Pep. I think he will come good again and have a good next season. The guy is hurting to fix it and I like that too.

He'll be off in or around 60 minutes with Gakpo going to CF and Rio coming in.

Probably would have let Rio start today if it was me but I can see why they've held him back as I'd imagine the crowd would be right up for this and be on him constantly through the match.

He did play Chiesa but he didn't play Ramsay

Occams Razor would suggest that Ramsay is way off the pace. Chiesa we can actually see he isn't up to much when he came on

It didn't help the perception that we weren't winning because he wasn't using the squad. I don't think that's true I think it's overwhelmingly a mentality problem and a motivational problem

Simply switching the underperforming players with crap players wasn't the silver bullets a lot of (online) fans thought it was. Our problems are wider and more nuanced that that but people loved the headline views

Slot suggest they like to push O'Brien high for Pickford long balls. Obviously, Gakpo is better placed to deal with that.

Defensively, Rio still has a lot of work to do.

Ngumoha should be starting over Gakpo. I don't care.

I get the logic of 'last 15/20 against tired legs', but why not give Gakpo those minutes? Rio has been MOTM multiple times now.

Who is at RB? Jones or Dom?

Disappointed Rio not starting ahead of Gakpo. I presume the argument is that Rio will be even better against a tiring defence. Gakpo is quite ineffective off the bench, but capable of linking up with Isak. Hopefully it goes well for him.

I dont think there’s any choice re Dom at fullback. Frimpong has been disappointing in recent starts, suspect defensively. But he’s a very good option off the bench. At fullback if we’re chasing a game, or further up the field if we’re ahead where his pace will be very dangerous on the break.

This is the right type of game for Robbo. Great leader, can still whip in a great ball, just no head wobbles in defence please

Most important thing today is we match Everton’s workrate. They can cause us trouble when they are rubbish, so having a decent team now is definitely ominous. Need to give this everything.

presumably they don’t want some oaf clattering into Rio and injuring him in the first 15 mins or so

Ndiaye is too good a player for them to have. He's the danger man

That tifo... They photoshopped the Beatles picture, in the original the scarf was red. They were supporting Liverpool ahead of the cup final in 1965.

Lots of problems with Grav at the 6, but I think the biggest might be hus lack of ability to pass.

Jones is more of a liability defensively than Dom at RB.

It’s clear that Gravenberch desperately needs to be playing in front of a DM rather than being our DM.

Stupid rule that you can beg the ref for a yellow card as much as you want as long as you don't wave an imaginary yellow card.

Wirtz well off the pace again

    One way traffic.

That's Gravenberch at his best. More of that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,820 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

This is basically how every away game starts against Everton for the last few years. They go for it 100% crowd gets on the refs back and the only thing we can do is weather the storm until 20th minute or so and get a foothold in the game. That might not happen at all this year given how fragile we are though.

Wirtz continuing his great form…..the more I see him, the more i think he's not suited to the PL or that the club / pressure is too big for him

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,585 ✭✭✭kingshankly

How people still defend Wirtz week in week out baffles me
