Although ultimately the need for oil might trump the need for 100% guarantee of safety?

I think trump thinks the pope is similar to a mayor, or a king….

weak on crime…. trump is such a buffoon…

    quick edit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_in_Vatican_City

    largely purse snatching…

The sooner the pope gets tough on criminals instead of just giving them 3 Hail Marys as penance the better 😠

They'll ignore it; many aren't thrilled with the Pope, but their Catholicism is their identity, never going to drop that. They've been ignoring so much about Trump's character and antics for so long, this will be holy water off a duck's back.

😂 I have to concede that to the best of my knowledge you have never accused the pope of being soft on crime either.

I honestly think someone told him that the Vatican has the worst per capita crime rate in the world and he is running with that.

The fact that the population is about 500 priests vs the millions of tourists that visit every year doesn't factor in to the equation

Since Iran do actually control the strait, I see no great issue with the EU negotiating a reasonable toll for it's use. Sure, the Iranian regime are evil but so is the American regime and the EU continue to do business with the USA.

If social media companies had been regulated and held responsible for the content they published then we would not have people like trump today. And we would not have so many other problems in society.

The same problem but much worse is happening with AI. 100s of millions being spent in lobbying such that it's not regulated.

sinking a single super tanker would be an ecological disaster on top of the damage already caused by blowing up refineries and other oil infrastructure

    Ban billionaires

The Iranian toll is their way of getting reparations for the war of aggression imposed on them by Israel and America

The only way Iran will agree to remove the toll, is if Israel and America agree to pay reparations for their attacks, and I don't see the US agreeing to this, and Israel certainly won't….

    Ban billionaires

Im surprised it took this long for Trump to start mocking the Pope. He will continue to lash out at everyone, he is flailing, he needs a distraction from the mess he has made. He looked enfeebled walking out at the ufc, desperately trying to hold onto to Dana Whites hand. He doesn't have the energy or momentum any more.

the Vatican has immigrants wearing gang colours roaming around carrying blades. It’s out of control

Trump is making a disastrous error attacking Pope Leo - it's estimated there are 60 to 70m Catholics in the US.

The new Pope seems to be doing an excellent job. Very outspoken on poverty and war (even more so than his predecessor) and he appears to be posting his own tweets on social media. Noticeable that he is far more critical of Trump than anyone in the Democrat party.

I'm sure Iran would be open to negotiations with third parties for the passage of third party ships through the strait. A deal with the EU, for example, to allow EU-flagged vessels pass through the strait for a reasonable toll (e.g. €250k to €500k per ship - fractions of a cent per litre on an oil tanker) would be appealing to them as not only would it be a source of revenue, it'd add legitamacy to the regimes rule and weaken Trump internationally.

The President of America and the Pope are having a spat on social media. How much dumber can this planet get.

On the bright side I get to watch some of my colleagues tie themselves in knots trying to square their love of Trump with their hardcore Catholicism now that Trump has posted a picture of himself as Jesus.

Don't forget the drug gangs. He'll have to swoop in and grab the pope, take him to the US and lock him up.

Credit to Trump where it’s due: “Pope Leo is WEAK on crime” is one of the funniest and most absurd things anyone has ever typed with a straight face, intentionally or (more likely) otherwise.

He has absolutely no idea who the Pope is, does he?

So true, and unregulated AI is going to create disruption and change of an unprecedented scale within a very short time. And what social disorder will then ensue? The recent turmoil over increased fuel prices will certainly pale into insignificance. Time to bucket up.

If the EU did a transit deal with Iran would their ships have to run the American blockade? You could not make it up? An EU deal would enrage Trump and make him an absolute fool of him. Would the EU do it to him, as a block we are far too polite. Would Iran do unique deals with Europe/China/India?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 583 ✭✭✭numbnutz

He'll be shouting at waterfalls and flowers next

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 24,910 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

He's perpetually enraged anyway and the EU as a blcok need to learn to be far less polite. That very politeness is the reason that Trump/Xi/Putin believe they can carve the world up into three spheres of influence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,197 ✭✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

Well, dumping chemicals in the river and calling it great advancement for the American people.

Certainly tramping all over the flowers too because you can't let people relax and enjoy Spring.

Wouldn't it be hilarious if the Papal Nuncio in Washington posted comparitive crime statistics for the US and the Vatican? 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,751 ✭✭✭amacca

I agree....a real cancer and all to enrich a small subset of people many of whom you wouldn't be able to tolerate in conversation for much longer than a couple of minutes.

While I absolutely agree in theory, its hard to see how social media in its current form could be controlled. Insist that facts must be correct? Correct by whose interpretation? We already have alternative facts. How can you have discussion if people cannot (innocently or otherwise) make statements and other people correct them? Do you insist on 'official' facts - ie from the US President or other members of his administration - being correct? The President can dictate that if he states a fact, it is automatically true. Content such as conspiracy theories are correct or incorrect, who gets to decide which is fact and which is opinion? And how do you educate people to make the decision as to whether an opinion is a fact? A rogue administration says vaccinations are dangerous, how does AI decide whether this is true?

YouTube try and control videos by sanctioning certain words, people just get round them by using other words or blanking out words, 'unalive' for murdered or dead for example. Its even been made into a verb, 'he was unalived'. Or asterisks for swear words, people substitute the/a swear word for a row of asterisks, probably without even noticing.

Swear words and trigger phrases are not the main danger, it is ideas that are the problem. Is social media to be controlled by the AI that analyses ideas based either on volume and content of discussion on the internet, or on basic 'truths' that it is fed by authority?

We have a kind of Thought Police situation going on, except that immediate control is being wielded by a mass of unthinking cultish humanity feeding the AI algorithms rather than directly by a government. But if we believe in majority rule, how can we argue that that majority cannot be a mob of trained seals, if that is what there is the most of?

It does seem that the majority of US citizens want a right wing administration, not necessarily MAGA, but an administration that allows the personal 'freedoms' that they think they have, and only personal rather than social responsibilities. Fair enough, let them get on with it. But other countries need this to be kept within the borders of the USA and not allowed to bleed into the rest of the world. We could make a start by organising algorythms to first feed local and (say) EU news and content, rather than silly situations where you look for some information or service in Waterford or Dublin and get half a dozen offerings of Waterford or Dublin in the USA.

Orban's defeat does suggest that an educated population, paying attention, can overcome these biases, but as Trump has said, he loves the poorly educated, and is making sure that in his population, this status is maintained.

Yeah, most logical actors know Trump is the ultimate moron....

They will probably take the decision to just wait out the latest stupidity from the corrupt orange fool
