I'm not sure what you're focusing on here, but I would submit that the only thing which is important right now is the Strait and what happens from now to shipping through it.

There aren't many possible outcomes on this. Either the US (and other countries) agree to Iranian control (apparently to include tolls), or they don't. If they don't, they either try to force the strait or they have no ships go through. If they try to force the strait, they will succeed or they won't.

It's not impossible that the world will cede control of the strait to Iran, but i find it unlikely. I also don't think that "no ships go through" is an acceptable outcome.

This leaves forcing the strait. First without civilian shipping, later with. They've already started the without, apparently Iran's "Last Warning" didn't result in much.

    Screenshot_20260412_182731_Samsung Internet.jpg

What happens when civilian ships start being escorted through? Will Iran attempt to oppose them? If a number of ships are passed through without opposition (Tanker escorts through the strait lasted over a year in the 1980s), are the others going to be happy paying their toll? If Iran does attempt opposition, if they don't defeat the escorting force, they'll be in an even worse position than they would be if they didn't try.

So again, how does Iran end up in a better position if it attempts to oppose a forcing of the strait, and how confident are the Iranians that they can pull it off?

After Vance’s failed trip to Hungary this week at the request of Putin how much more evidence do we need that Trump is a Russian asset????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,059 ✭✭✭RickBlaine

Imagine the sh*tstorm in the right wing media if Macron or Ursula von der Leyen travelled to the US to campaign with the Democrats. But that's no different to what Vance did in Hungary.

Iran could declare oil a drug and all those 'civilian' ships transporting it as narco terrorists and they would be fine to attack them, right? I mean it's ok for Trump to just bomb 'civilian' ships. They would be cleared under international law (what ever the **** is left of it)

You have brought up that comparison of the tanker escorts in the 80's but things have changed dramatically. There won't be a UNSC resolution for it and we're now in the age were a $100 FPV drone can take out the bridge of any tanker, leaving it adrift.

It's like the US learned nothing from Ukraine in the past 4 years.

I assure you, the US has been learning, the problem I’m seeing is an assumption that the situation of Ukraine with regards attacking things pertains to the Straits, which it doesn’t for a number of reasons.

The question for Iran becomes “how confident are we that if we try to attack an escorted vessel that we will get something through to hit it?” Bear in mind the escort group would be equally confident it would be able to prevent anything from hitting before it started the journey, or it wouldn’t try. If they are already sending billion-dollar destroyers into the strait, the US is either doing a good bluff, or it’s confident its ships will be OK.

Trump not a fan of the pope anymore, says he should “stop catering to the Radical Left.”

“Pope Leo is WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy…” Huh, I never knew that was the pope's job.

The markets seem to be factoring start of every week there is some sort of movement by the US, or a social media post by Trump that alarms everybody, and by the end of the week, he has either reversed position or claimed a win, and the markets climb back up again.

    So true, biggly true

For the 148th time in his presidency, I'm going to say he has jumped the shark.

Who would have thought that voting in a malignant narcissist would have come to this?

Elect a clown... Expect a circus

    @Manic Moran

Wasn't Vance and the US "brains trust" team either in Pakistan or on their way when this US warship sailed through?

So the US put Iran in a bad position of break the ceasefire and attack the ship during negotiation, an attack which will probably fail to sink or even damage the ship given defences they have, but will almost certainly (IMO) result in bombing starting again…or do nothing and let it slide.

Agree with you and others who point out Iran certainly isn't "winning" here and the war is a disaster for them. They (regime) are trying to survive this and ultimately force the US to halt and the leverage they have over the waters near them and the damage they can cause to the world economy is one of the only advantages they have.

Why make the guy Jesus Trump is curing look so much like Epstein?

The more you look at it, the worse it gets.

But I suppose this is his standard distraction method. Vances trips to Hungary and Pakistan have been disasters, Trump's new plan to blockade the blockade is being widely mocked but now we're talking about a stupid AI image

As someone online pointed out, it almost looks like he's healing Jeffrey Epstein.

I'd say the maga heads in Northern Ireland are having a hard time with Trump's projecting himself as the pope, which to some brethren is the antichrist.

everything trump touches goes wrong. So it’s safe to say, that guy has expired.

Also, Does anyone know if that trump social post real?

was that AI image actually part of it?

The President Of The United States Of America is trolling the Pope.

Never thought I’d be typing that.

Sorry, that analogy is completely back to front.

Trump projecting himself as Pope? I thought he was insulting the Pope, which these days is a bit too much even for many Loyalists.

trump claimed the pope is 'weak on crime'

this may be a stupid question, but… does trump know 'the pope' is not the nickname for some comic book crimefighter?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,892 ✭✭✭✭Loafing Oaf

I don’t think it’s feasible to “force the strait” in this way because my understanding is the vast majority of civilian ships would not be willing to traverse it with any sort of threat hanging over them, even under American escort

That's rich coming from the man who serially pardons drug importers, swindlers and violent criminals (provided you're the right type of drug importer, swindler or violent criminal) .

There are a quite a lot of American hard right Catholics in MAGA. it’ll be interesting to see if they are going to walk away from the church in favour of their political cult leader.
