Fuel protest about prices

I've just been added to a WhatsApp group about all the protests on Tuesday morning at 7. Anyone heard of this?

It's supposed to be nationwide but I haven't heard anything on the news or anywhere else about it. As usual there's the militant core that want to bring the government to its knees but in reality its the normal joe/joesephine soap that'll have to suffer.

This is in Clare but the admin on the group said it's happening all over so just be aware in case there's delays. They've planned to block all roads into Shannon and Ennis so far and only let emergency vehicles travel.

From what I can see on my social feeds is that this is being pushed primarily by the "Says No Crowd". So while this protest will about fuel prices expect any WhatsApp group to become infested with anti immigrant, homophobic and general conspiracy nonsense shortly.

Would they not block up Washington or Tel Aviv rather than places over here?

Which rather ironically have a soft spot for the prime instigator of this crisis.

It has started already with the anti immigrant nonsense, also the standard of English comprehension and the ability to form coherent sentences is a very poor reflection on our education system. There's akso talk of blocking up roads to schools to maximise effect. There's over 800 in the group now but only 14 have committed to attending (on a WhatsApp poll) with one possible as he is waiting to hear back from his boss about a day off. One moron has even admitted to never having voted as there's "never been anyone worthy of her vote" gas stuff in fairness lol

I expect the government will issue live ammunition to the soldiers who are sent to "monitor" the protest...

Because obviously the Irish government can of course end the war in the Middle East …

This particular group was started by an individual with a large bus company, no sign of IFA, IRHA or any other organisation as of yet

    Are the attendees driving?

    What would you think yourself?

Sounds like it has the potential to be carnage tomorrow at rush hour. I wonder what the attendance will actually turn out at…..

Well many are starting out from motorway services areas so they definitely will be driving.

The plan seems to be to block roads.

Fkin morons the lot of them!

There's not a single thing this country can do about a war between Iran and Donald Trump. Nothing!

Blocking the roads this morning will achieve exactly zero except cause everyone stuck in it to expend even more fuel!

Still cost me 4 hours today for what would normally be an hour-ish to get to work.

Gardai no help. Just watching the show.

Right to protest is very important Kaiser.

I understand the frustration and I agree with you. (I'm not involved in the protests and I am WFH so it doesn't affect me).

But I'd expand, the government could reduce the % tax take like we saw in other EU countries. They would likely not even impact the exchequer as the reduced % on >225cpl vs the standard % on 150-160cpl is likely to be net neutral at best in raw € terms.

Fuel duties have been cut and the majority of taxes on fuel are not percentages - only the VAT is.

They have a right to protest, but they should all get all of the penalty points and fines due to them for their behaviour on the roads. They won't need to worry about fuel prices when they lose their license.

Absolutely you should have the right to protest.

You should not have the right to cause chaos for others though.

This, similar to the Uber "protest" should be illegal.

Tell me how you would restrict the right of people to assemble? bearing in mind constitutional protections under Article 40.6.1.ii

AFAIK this protest was lodged with the authorities and given appropriate escorts, similar to a parade.

Also didn't spain remove the VAT on fuel?

Provision may be made by law to prevent or control meetings which are determined in accordance with law to be calculated to cause a breach of the peace or to be a danger or nuisance to the general public and to prevent or control meetings in the vicinity of either House of the Oireachtas.

Prohibiting people from blocking roads is fine - they can protest elsewhere.

And… given that the protest was coordinated with local authorities and with AGS, how do you reckon that generic clause could be then enforced?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 589 ✭✭✭user060916

I'm saying all protests should be banned from clogging up roads. Which is what I wrote.

I had a lot of sympathy for them, but after today I've none.

Yes they did nothing illegal but alienating the general public is an idiotic idea imo.

Same as the Uber protest. There are far far more effective ways of protesting and getting what you want.

Hmmm, not seeing much alienation around here, tbh, hearing a lot of support for them, nobody minds being a few minutes late.

How are they alienating the public? You have no idea how serious these fuel prices are for the economy. Hauliers who can't pass on the costs are going to go out of business, what will you do then when the shelves are empty?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 589 ✭✭✭user060916

I'm not sure how you can say "You have no idea how serious these fuel prices are for the economy."

You have no idea about my background, or how the fuel prices are affecting me or my businesses. It's a massive strain on the company finances at the moment.

I think the government needs to do more, but I don't think this protest is the way to get it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 29,819 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

But it wasn't a few minutes.. It was several hours of delays.

If they'd kept their protest to one lane of the motorway it would still have made the point and still inconvenienced people but at least it would have been minimised.

Blocking all lanes as they did on the M/N7 as well as blocking on ramps however is not acceptable.

They should have been diverted into a single lane by Gardai - not just watched and allowed to cause more potential issues by some frustrated motorists then illegally driving up hard shoulders to get by.

Video of the limerick ones shows multiple vehicles on the grass median and hard shoulders - every single one of them should be banned off the road for 10 years. It's one thing obstructing traffic, it's totally another when you completely block all access.
