It goes without saying that you'd need good Wi-Fi coverage in your home too. I'm in an area where none of the mobile networks have great coverage (although Vodafone and Three are marginally better than Eir), so I set up a UniFi system with three APs on wired backhaul to ensure no less than -60 dBm in each room. -67 is considered the cutoff for realtime applications but I factored some leeway into it.

A word of warning, eir uses technology that piggybacks their 5G on their 4G where needed so you could see full 5G bars but only get 5Mb speed.

I got a motorola 50 neo and wifi calling on it is a nightmare. Can't blame clear, it's not their issue as it works fine on another tester phone. After some googling, turns out motorola like to play games with certain networks.

does gomo throttle internet speed after 120gb data exceed?

I am watching youtube and tv channels whole day over phone, and I will exceed 120gb in 8 to 10 days.

It shouldn't for anyone who signed up after the 1st of November 2024 -

6.4A. For Customers signing up from 1st November 2024, fair usage data limits and/or data allowances referred to in this agreement, including in Clauses 6.4 and 6.6 or in any associated Fair Use Policy ('FUP'), shall not apply to the Customer's domestic data usage.

I was getting 20 Mb/sec this morning on Clear, now I'm getting 300.

After the above advice I turned off wifi calling option, that would hardly effect that outcome?

I think I need to cancel my GoMo application and stay with Clear.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,450 ✭✭✭NotShero

No that shouldn't affect data speed. Speeds can fluctuate depending on which bands your phone has connected to and the congestion of the network throughout the day.

I'm on GoMo and have been for a while. I haven't noticed any throttling, but I do mostly use WiFi at home. I've quite bad mobile signal coverage from all providers at my location, so using WiFi is more or less non-negotiable.

The advantages of GoMo include that it's not the Three network (which I've found in the past to be over-subscribed), it doesn't have that silly percentage annual cost increase, it can easily hit close to 1Gbps on 5G in areas with good coverage, and they've recently introduced eSIMs with good compatibility. I don't see myself moving off them willingly any time soon.

I assume you dont roam with them much so, I was with Eir/Gomo for over 20 years I reckon and the service deteriorated so bad for me over the last 18 months that I finally left them back in Dec. Roaming in UK, Spain and other parts of Mainland Europe had gotten so bad I was left with no other option.

Since moving to Clear, things have returned to normal. Spent a week over in the Cotswolds earlier this month and had speeds in excess of 50mb on 4G and had no signal issues either, 5G was rare to be fair, but that doesnt bother me to be honest.

I've roamed in the UK, Spain and Croatia most recently, no issues.

No it would have no impact.

Vodafone and Three use carrier aggregation - you could have three 4G radios/channels operating on a tower that are combined together to give the total throughput of all three. Usually shows on an Android phone as 4G+ and it's how you can still get triple digit speeds on a 4G-only handset.

In recent years both have started switching off all but one 4G and one 5G channel during off-peak hours in order to save energy. The phone will only show 4G instead of 4G+ and the speed is a fraction of the usual peak.

Once they turn back on the rest of the channels speed jumps back up again.

I'd say that's what's going on for you - Vodafone do it on a set schedule so if you have the inclination to run regular speedtests throughout the day you'll be able to spot the times they're turned on and off.

I see that if you're rejoining Clear, you can't use the same e-mail address as before. Had to register a new account with a different e-mail. Their live chat confirmed it, but suggested they can consolidate the accounts once you're active again.

Some GoMo SpeedTest results from earlier today. Download only.

    Home: 22 Mbps
As I've noted, I have poor coverage in my location. I have also previously tested this on the Vodafone and Three networks, with consistent results, so I'm satisfied that it's my location, not the network.

    Santry Omni: 116 Mbps
Inside the main hall of the shopping centre.

    Santry Omni: 196 Mbps
    Just inside the main entrance.

    Santry Omni: 260 Mbps
    Just outside the main entrance.

I don't think any of that is too shabby. In the city centre I do get much higher, but I'd expect that anyway.

As regards roaming, I typically find the UK to have poor and patchy coverage, Spain is almost always excellent, and i can't remember how I got on in Croatia. I've also been in the Netherlands recently but can't remember that either.

GoMo €12.99 offer is ending today. I signed up today as my Eir discount is ending in April.

If you’ve already jumped on the GoMo €12.99 deal before it ends, that’s a solid move for heavy data use, especially if you’re often on 5G in busy areas. For 120 GB in under 10 days, you’ll really notice how stable the network is at peak times more than any fair‑use rule, so I’d test speeds online at different hours before ditching Clear completely. On the network side, it reminds me of how Globe in the Philippines is pushing data‑heavy usage after adding 495 new towers and reaching 63.1 million mobile subscribers, all documented in their SIM registration and stats reports.

    GoMo back to €14.99.
48 is €12.99, with the free first month ending on 02/06/2026.

48 will stay at €12.99pm, that timer is just for the 2nd month free promotion

Seems our resident weirdo is back.

On-topic, hopped on the GoMo offer end of last week, SIM arrived yesterday, I requested the switchover to be tomorrow morning. Eir SIM-only customer at the moment so coverage will be the same but cost halved - can hardly go wrong with that

Current download speeds with Clear are 160 Mbps, not bad at all.

I'm dialled in to switch to GoMo in a couple days though.

But Clear is variable, sometimes it doesn't even get 5G.

I'd been forgetting to do more GoMo SpeedTests but managed to get 2 more in today.

    Glasnevin Cemetery : 220 mbps

    Circle K Ballymun Road : 874 mbps (!!!)

I think the last one is conclusive enough and establishes that, given good coverage, GoMo is well capable of competitive performance versus any other provider.

Clear Mobile will be getting eSim soon - just off with customer service.

I've had a fantastic experience with them over the last 3/4 months on the €9.99 deal, never an issue, roaming working perfect & on multiple devices. My latest bill was a hefty €24 as I called the UK a few times when I should've used my work phone but that was my own fault - be mindful of out of bundle charges.

    Overall they have been excellent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,450 ✭✭✭NotShero

They say eSIM is coming soon quite a lot but it always seems to be pushed out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28 Resplendent Moose

GoMo offer eSIMs now but you can't switch existing subscriptions online, you need to go through support and they'll do it for you. I don't know about new subscriptions.

Their eSIM/phone compatibility seems to be better than e.g. Sky, who weren't compatible with even relatively recent Google Pixel models last time I checked. Something to double-check if you're considering switching.

I signed up to GoMo the other day and went for the eSIM option. Nice and simple job.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 604 ✭✭✭GalaxyRyder

50 Mbps so far on GoMo.

Similar bar coverage (two to three bars out of four, more frequently two, exactly like Clear).

    It could improve, possibly?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 604 ✭✭✭GalaxyRyder

30 Mbps on normal times, 50 is times with low congestion.

    I'm going back to Clear.

I ordered the SIM on the 23rd, can I cancel and get a refund?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 253 ✭✭danm14

They claimed eSIM was coming in January last November.
