Laptop battery charging turns off after less than a minute

As per the title. Laptop battery wasn't charging. I replaced the battery but it still isn't working. What happens is that the battery icon detects the power cable has been plugged in, but I only see the charging status increment for less than 30sec before it turns off.

I disabled the drivers in Device Manager and restarted - no improvement. I also let the battery discharge in an attempt to recalibrate it (was initially stuck at 57%; now it is 5%).

I've no ideas now how to improve this.

    Any thoughts?

Also took the battery out and held down the power button.

    No effect on reboot.

Is it a USB-C or a round connector from the power supply? If the former, then you probably have other device charging cables that you might try it with to see if it continues to charge (though maybe not very fast). If the latter I would suggest trying a different & compatible power supply, in case the existing cable or transformer are flaky in some way.

If you tried either of those and the issue still exists, then it's most likely the power port on the laptop itself is flaky. I've had to replace these on a couple of Dells in the last 18 months.

I also had this issue a while ago with my Dell - thought it was the cable/pin so got a whole replacement cable but the issue persisted, and it turned out to be the charging port which was replaced and no problem since.

It is a round connector. Putting out the required 19.5V. Didn't check current as that's a bit more difficult to do.

Would a duff power port allow the laptop to run on mains though? Laptop works as long as the mains power is attached. It just won't charge the battery. I get a charging indication for less than 30sec and then it stops. The battery icon continues to show that the mains plug is connected.

Are charging ports easily obtained? This is a ~2016 Clevo W950JU (PC Specialist purchase). They didn't have a spare battery for it. Now I've got 3 as there was a mess up with the seller of the replacement battery!

If it's delivering enough power to run the laptop, then the power supply should be fine and the port too.

You said you disabled the drivers in Device Manager. How about uninstalling the device altogether and, when prompted, remove the drivers as well. Then reboot and see how it goes.

If still not working, then the BIOS would be the next place I'd suggest looking at in case some setting has magically changed.

Edit to add - In answer to your question about buying charging ports, I was able to get them from Dell directly (~€35). I'm not sure about Clevo.

From your description OP it is most unlikely you have a problem with the charging port. Check the circuit around the charging port connections. You can get hairline cracks in the circuit tracks caused by pressure on the port when connecting/disconnecting.

Double check the battery connections to the board.

Thanks - I'll get it stripped down over Easter and report back!
