I'm out of contract with Energia on the 12th of this month so was thinking of switching to Pinergy.

But these rates don't seem too bad apart form the rural standing charge which is €65 dearer than Energia.

The fact that the Fit is 19.5c and the night rate from 23:00 to 08:00 is 15.05c (not accounting for the cheaper boost rate between 2 - 4) I could dump my batteries before 23:00 and go on grid before charging them back up a few hours later. I have ~32kWh storage so this could work out well. Pinergy would be hard to optimise with a 3 hour window.

    Are there any usage limits?

    Also T&Cs state:

If you are selecting a smart price plan for the first time, your meter will be reconfigured so that your supplier will receive a minimum of three meter reads (day/night/peak). This change cannot be reversed. The frequency of these reads will depend on the smart price plan that you have selected and/or any consent you may have given.

I'm on an EV tariff at present on a smart meter so is this irrelevant?

EDIT: I've done the maths and it still works out a lot cheaper with Pinergy for my usage, oh well…

Yep, if you're on a smart plan already you're almost certainly sending this data.

Pinergy don't make it easy to see their rates in black & white. Also there has been some negative feedback around their particularly implementation of level pay.

Out of contract ( electric ireland )

recently just got my smart metre and just Friday gone had my ev charger installed

who is currently the best for Ev charging ?

Pinergy has been the best for years at just 5.98c / kWh incl. VAT. This rate is only valid from 2AM to 5AM and their day rate is very high. So you will need a home battery too for this to work. Their feed in tariff is also the highest in the market. I have made thousands from them since I joined them over 2.5 years ago

Looks like the race to the bottom has started 😥

Best offer I can see from switching sites is Electric Ireland, who have dropped their new customer discount to a record low of 5.5% which means the following now available to EV owners coming off contract in or around now:

Day: 35.06c / kwh incl. VAT

Night: 17.29 / kwh incl. VAT

That's a big swing in the market recently.

Anyone seen anything better for non-smart D/N customers?

Energy pal is bringing up a Bord Gáis non smart D/N plan with 32% discount for me but I couldnt see it on their site earlier.

would work out at around 31c day and 15c night.

Flogas showing as next best after that

I can't quite see that BGE plan, just their 24hr plan - which is 31.20 incl. VAT per kw/h.

  • Administrators, Computer Games Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 32,901 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Mickeroo

I'm guessing it's a mistake on energypal, I can only see a 25% discount on their website and nothing about nightsaver metres unless i go here and look up the tarrifs: https://www.bordgaisenergy.ie/home/our-tariffs

Looks like Flogas is the best so:

Christ, they don't make it easy for you to find plan details on any of the provider sites do they?

Would you have a link to that Flogas Nightsaver plan Mick?

    Here: https://www.flogas.ie/price-plans/electricity/

If you click the "View Plan Details" dropdown it will show you the night saver rates.

A general question: Why is the standing charge (considerably) different between a 24hr meter and a D/N meter? Is it "just because they can" or is there an operational or logistical reason for it?

I can understand that access to a meter that is urban-based or rural-based might possibly make a difference to the management cost - even that might be a stretch though.

I have no idea, to be honest I have always assumed its a way for them to claw back some of the money you save through the lower rates, though surely they could just have higher rates if that was the case.

It's terrible and has always been like that. Ironically if you get a smart meter and then choose a smart D/N plan you get charged the same rate as a standard meter.

Doesn't show for me on that link. No option for just a day/night option. All day rate or various day/peak/night/ev rate options.

If you take the cumulative D/N rates you'll find that they are much less than the single 24hr rate,I'm currently on 27.46c/13.54c which works out at 20.5c a unit for me as we use more or less a 50/50 day night split. That's with E I(who haven't increased our rates)since around last September when I think the 24hr rate was about 28c per unit. You have to be hopping off those night units to make it work though but if you have an EV and heat pump and do all the other stuff on a timer it soon makes up for the pricier standing charge.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,507 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

Ah yeah, no I get that. I was just wondering why there is a difference in the standing charge at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,489 ✭✭✭John arse

    Haha yeah,swings and roundabouts I suppose?😁

Have you a smart meter? Are you rural or urban? What is your day/night mix? Have a look at a recent bill for usage.

Flogas look to be still the cheapest for a decent night window for charging. It has gone up, but still appears slightly lower than the others at 31.xx and 15.xx day/night incl. VAT.

Were always the cheapest for gas.

Renewed with Energia this afternoon - Day 29.49, Peak 33.12, Night 16.21, rural smart meter, 337.02 standing charge. Was paying 28.23, 31.7, 15.52 so higher rates than last year.

Some other prices I got today when phoning around:
    Flogas: 28.77 / 34.05 / 20.77
    BG: 33.62 / 41.04 / 24.76

Feed in tariff for all 3 was 18.5c

Coming off an Energia 26/13 non-smart plan in a few days. Looks like it's Flogas for me, even though rates will be up 20%. Use about 10000 kw/h on the night rate annually.

I moved to them about a week before the war kicked off. I think it was 28cent day and 13.5cent night I locked in at.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,507 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

How do you mean locked in? Flogas told they haven't done fixed rate plans for a year now.

All plans are variable in 2026 I thought? (regardless of war).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,632 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

Ringing them is a waste of time, your case is proof of that☺️. They had fixed plans on their site up to the day that pointless war started. I'm on one since January my son set his up on the 28th of February and the plans were withdrawn the next day 🥵 he was very lucky.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,507 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

    Nice one - thanks folks.

So they fed me a porkie 😂

I like their rates, but I hate their website and their non-existent customer service capacity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,260 ✭✭✭Exiled Rebel

Contracts might be for 12/24 months but rates are only fixed for 30 days, as in they'll give you 30 days notice regarding a price increase.

Fixed Rates v Fixed Contracts. Big difference!

It said fixed rate on the welcome letter Flogas sent me. A week later that offer was gone from the website.
