Hello knowledgeable people. There's a slight nick/chip on one of my wheels. Is it possible to tell from the photos whether this is bad or not? Could it compromise the integrity of the wheel or just superficial? Thanks

The rim is finished I’d say.
It’s right on the rim wall where the tyre bead hooks in and seats so there may be more stress there.
It could well be fine for many years but it would always be on my mind; especially if running lower tyre pressures.
    I’d replace if possible.
Did it get a knock or hit something? What type of rim is it out of interest

    Thanks for the replies.

That's a brand new DT Swiss ERC 1400 Dicut 45 straight out of the box. I bought a new Canyon road bike and it arrived like that on Tuesday.

I've raised this with Canyon, sent in pics which are being reviewed. I've requested a replacement wheel. I was looking for people's opinions as these are my first carbon wheels and wouldn't know if it's minor or not, so just preparing to dispute it when Canyon say it's not worth a replacement.

If they do, I'll just return the whole bike. Hopefully it won't come to that. I’m not comfortable accepting the wheel in this condition. Given this is a brand new bike, I would expect the components to be in perfect condition on delivery. I haven't used it so no problem in sending it back, despite not wanting to!

    It's a disappointing start.

That model wheel is literally part of a DT Swiss recall at the moment because of delamination at the rim wall. Very surprised Canyon would have let it through

Yeah I remember seeing a notification on the website (I can't see it now) saying these wheels aren't part of the recall batch, these were built post-recall.

I'll check out that guidance on the DT SWiss website though, thanks for linking

It has the sticker so not affected by the recall

Recall or not, out of the box like that its a return and replacement job. I thought you had hit something that caused it.

I'd get the whole bike inspected if it arrived like that out of the box, if was spending that sort of money on something new id want 100% certainty it is perfect. Don't suggest to them its just a wheel replacement, just get them to resend the whole lot if possible and send the broken bike back.

Ah come on if it's the wheel there's no need to send the whole bike back. They'll only replace the damaged wheel in any case.

Yep, sending the whole bike back seems overkill and a bit pointless as they would most likely just send it back with the replacement wheels.

Well, good news. They're going to ship a new wheel out, no arguments. Happy with this, obviously would've been happier with a perfect wheel in the first place but relieved it didn't take a fight.

Presume I'm going to have to transfer the disc and tyre over. No mention yet on whether I need to return the damaged one.

I'd be very surprised if their customer support would just send the rim and not a ready-to-go wheel

Yeah you're right. I'm to put the old wheel in the box that the new wheel ships in, and send it back.

Make sure to have a look around the frame in the same area in case theres any other damage from transit

Should be easy to spot on a new frame
