As they say, give me a lucky general any day!

But yes, I do think he's a good manager. I think he keeps things simple. I love the way he talks about football, not getting caught up in specific formations, but rather suggesting its more important what the players actually do in-game than where they're standing at the beginning. He's a very good communicator, and also just comes across as a properly decent grown up fella.

And it's not just us… the job he did with Iceland was absolutely astounding (hence why I was very happy with we got him in the first place). Topping a world cup qualifying group with Iceland is about as impressive an international managerial feat as I've seen.

Exactly. I'd rather keep Heimir than risk someone new for the euro 2028 qualifiers, he hasn't been perfect but achieved the objective of getting to the playoffs and hopefully exceeds it in the coming days. I also like that he isn't a manager who has a particular system and players have to buy into it, he seems to weigh up our strengths game by game and play what he thinks will get a result.

Regardless of how these playoffs go, we will have largely the same pool of players now for the next few years - only Coleman and Brady will probably pack it in with the rest still relatively young. A euros in Dublin that we have a great chance of playing in is only around the corner as far as international football goes, I think keeping Heimir onboard with this squad is a good idea.

Festy was dreadful against Hungary. Maybe paying the price.

Not enough games to judge him properly.

I'm happy to keep him on. I'll take luck and good results over anything else.

We've a decent squad for a few years at least but badly need a CM.

We are going to find out on Thursday. Was it sheer luck of a complacent Portugal side who thought they just had to show up and got punished and a cursed Hungary side that panicked in the second half? Or maybe an actual maturing of the team. Or it was actually two or three players dragging the rest along… It's hard to tell. We were outplayed for long periods of the Hungary game.

All international football except the tiny elite are 1 or 2 players dragging everyone through.

Solid with a few match winners could describe almost everyone.

I'd say it's moreso just how little he's played… not even an hour of league ball this year. You can carry that for someone like Coleman, or even Ogene, but you can't really be allowing it further down the depth chart.

I like how he got the FAI to move the away fans from behind the goal for the next home game. He has been lucky but he also is trying his best for the team by the looks of it. im more positive about Thursday than some on here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,969 ✭✭✭✭briany

He definitely strikes me as a decent man, and that perception won't change whatever the result on Thursday. A lot of managers would take that contract extension with minimal reservations, just because it means a couple more years work or a payoff at worst if the FAI wanted to cut it short, but he apparently said to the FAI it might be better to wait until after the playoff to decide, but the FAI went (I imagine the FAI rep as some sort of unkempt ham sandwich man), "Ahnooshurnotawordo'datnowshuraren'tyouagreatmanatdefootballrightenoughandtisalldesame"

There’s a slightly worrying level of over confidence creeping into remarks from ex Internationals and pundits in the media. Let’s hope all of that silly noise is not being absorbed by the players and management.
Anyone would think beating teams (ranked higher than us) away from home is a common occurrence.

Reality is it happens once in a blue moon for us.

I give us a decent chance vs the Czechs but no more than that. And being honest we are the underdog in this tie.

And we’ll need key players like Troy, Kelleher and Coleman to produce outstanding performances once again.

It's really boom or bust when it comes to punditry around the Irish team. I remember the optimism in the runup to Euro 2012, despite being in the group of death and having qualified virtually in spite of themselves. I knew it was particularly bad when even Dunphy fancied the team to get to the knockouts. Contrast that to the unrelenting dourness when the bubble bursts.

To say that it'll be a tough game where the odds aren't in Ireland's favour, but if key players show up then there's at least a fighting chance - that to me is quite a reasonable, even-handed take.

    It's feast or famine.

I'm under no illusions. They've similar ranking to Hungary who were much better than us for most of the game but we prevailed.

I can see it being a 1-1 draw and hopefully we prevail in the penalties.

The Danes have a bit of an injury crisis in defence so maybe the Macedonians might surprise us.

We were on a good run heading into 2012. Conceded very few goals in the year leading up to it.

I remember Rafa Benitez named us as his dark horse before the tournament! Reckoned we’d get out of the group.

In hindsight, the core group of players in Duff, Keane, Given and Dunne were all past their prime. Had we qualified in 2010 instead of France, I reckon they’d have done much better. Far easier group for a start!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,969 ✭✭✭✭briany

Not really. Failed to beat Slovakia twice. Beaten by Russia in Dublin and only managed to eke out a miraculous 0-0 in Moscow. Got the weakest team in the playoffs. Had to rely on Slovakia crapping the bed v Armenia to even get there. Last game before the finals was a rather dull nil all against Hungary who hadn't qualified. There was actually nothing to suggest the team would surprise people, competing in the group of death.

Understandably all the talk of ourselves but how are the Czech's shaping up? I see Patrick Schick scored two the weekend in Leverkusen's 3-3 draw, typical! Soucek played nearly the full game for West Ham v Villa. Two of their defenders Coufal and Hranac with Hoffenheim involved in a 5-0 loss to RB Leipzig and one of theirs at Lyon (Pavel Sulc) scored in a home loss to Monaco. Another defender played the full game in Bologna’s 0-2 home loss to Lazio. Didn’t bother looking at any of their home based players with the like of Slavia Prague, Plzen etc. and unsure if they are carrying any injuries.

Anyone living in CZ or can comment on what the Czech version of Boards or newspapers are saying/predicting? You'd imagine they'd be confident but also wary of our ability to spring an upset. I'd say they reckon if they can shut down Troy they'll do the job while hoping for Schick to carry on the scoring form.

Ya 2010 should have been the big swansong for the 2002 team. 2012 was a tournament too late.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,466 ✭✭✭✭pgj2015

Given let the team down as well by playing while injured and not stepping aside for an uninjured goalkeeper.

The reality is that stuff creeps through to the players imo, particularly when ex-internationals are jumping on the bandwagon.

We were a bit fortunate to get past Hungary. It was a fabulous feeling of course but the reality is the opposition sh*t themselves in the last 10 minutes and fair play, we were clinical enough to punish them. But we rode our luck.

Our record away from home in competitive games is frankly pretty awful. This bullish over-confidence for a win in Prague seems mis-placed to me.

Let's see how it plays out Thursday evening.

Anything east of the Iron Curtain are minnows who we should be beating.

That's a very prevalent attitude in Irish soccer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,901 ✭✭✭McFly85

I think we’re pretty significant underdogs on Thursday. Czechs in front of a home crowd where they rarely lose and look to have put their house in order since the draw was made. We have a couple of key injuries too and our midfield is insanely light. They will have no fear of us.

Still though, it’s not impossible for us to get a result. I could see it going to penos which would be almost unbearable!

If we do lose I hope the media aren’t too critical(unless it’s a complete hammering). We’re in this position due to a legendary week in Irish football that nobody saw coming. While we might not be able to maintain it now, I think the camp would be in good spirits going into the much more achievable Euro campaign with HH.

And many fans would struggle to draw the Iron Curtain.

as usual we just need to raise ourselves to be significantly better than the actual sum of our parts.

Look pundits in Macedonia will be saying they can go to Denmark and win.

Thats just the way it is

Czechs are 4/9 to qualify we are 8/5. Underdogs but we still are in with a shout.

Be nervy though I reckon. We never do it easy anyway. I just hope we put up a good show and see from there.

They will say otherwise, but this will be a big distraction for Czechia in the run in.
