looking to plan a trip ahead for my husbands 50th & 20th wedding anniversary in early August 2027 and hoping to get some advice. Looking at Bangkok and maybe Samui. What would be the best airline you flew with to Thailand for comfort (I am a nervous flyer)? Was thinking of booking the holiday ourselves instead of package deals with travel agency? Or would you recommend doing package deals? Would be very grateful to hear of your experiences.

I'm going back in a few weeks. I'm flying with Qatar Airways again, I have no issue with them - Emirates are another option but I'd just go with what's cheaper as both are very good in my experience.

I always do my own thing so I never book package deals, it's very easy to do everything yourself in Thailand anyway. I was in Koh Samui last year and it's fine but you should consider going to Chang Mai, I really like it there - very relaxed and there's lots to see. I guess it just depends on what you want to get from the trip though.

August is at the height of the monsoons, so be aware. I found Samui very unappealing.
As the OP suggests, I’d be more inclined towards CM. BKK is a fabulous city imo.
I too would recommended the ME3 ( Etihad is also an option). There’s also the Turkish option, though I’ve no experience of them.

Thank you so much for the reply Tacitus. Will defo look into to Chang Mai as an option. Booking everything outselves will hopefully give us more options of different hotel. At least I can use this year as a guide for pricing.

Yeah I wasn't a big fan of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan but that was mainly due to the level of weed consumption (I'm not a prude, I just hate the smell of it) and the nationality of many of the tourists that go there. I don't want to start a political shitshow on this thread so I won't name names.

Definitely check it out, it's a lovely place to relax in. I hired out a Grab driver for a day and got to see lots of the area too so it's very easy to see the sights.

Grab being an app like Uber, Bolt etc. More like Uber because you can order food as well as taxis. Download it when you are there. Bolt is the next best in my experience.

Thanks Wishyouwerehere & Tacitus I really appreciate your feedback. Just on Bangkok was looking at Novotel Sukhumvit 20 hotel. Nice skybar for drinks at night. Wanted to stay central close to skyrail with nice bars and restaurants but be away from seedy parts if that makes sense.

Don’t mind paying the price for hotels here as it is a special treat. Be grateful on yours thoughts

    Thanks

In Bangkok I like to stay in Soi 8, it's a nice street and not too seedy. Soi 11 is across from it and that has a lot of good places to go out in.

Chang Mai is closer to what authentic Thailand is all about. I really enjoyed it there, its nice and relaxed, lots of beautiful temples etc.

Krabi is good for beaches if that's what you're into. Bangkok is a great city too.

Just to note, if you are into trekking or trailing you will prob need to get some shots weeks before going.

Travel to the islands in the Gulf of Thailand in August will minimise exposure to monsoon (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) They have a later monsoon season late October to mid January.

Jumping into the thread even though I can't offer any experience of being there. Have booked my first trip to Thailand recently for July - going to Bangkok, Gulf Islands (Koh Samui and another), Chiang Mai and flying home from Bangkok. Flying with Qatar Airlines and got return flights via Doha for €700 each which felt like a great deal about a month ago.

I've done a lot of research which I'm happy to share if you need anything, we're staying on Sukhumvit Soi 16 in a hotel called Gardina Asoke. That intersection at Asok seems to be the sweetspot transport wise as you have access to both the BTS and MTR, but I guess we won't know until we get there. Another area we looked at was around Sathorn Pier by the river as its meant to be a bit more relaxed and you can access the main sights by boat.

Internal flights in Thailand seem reasonably priced. Flying to Koh Samui for €60 each with a bag included and then flying from there to Chiang Mai which will probably be about €120 each.

A question I have for anyone who's been - any advice for how to allocate days in the Gulf Islands? We've about 12 nights there. Don't know whether to bother visiting both Koh Tao and Phangan. Have heard mixed reviews on Phangan with the type of person it attracts and very limited transport to get around. Might just stay in two different areas of Samui with 4 nights in Koh Tao in between but would love to hear some feedback or suggestions.

I wouldn't bother with Koh Phangan, unless you want to smoke weed.

Hi just back from Thailand. We had 5 weeks. We flew with Qatar via Doha to Bangkok.
It was a comfortable flight. We stayed in Chatrium Riverside Bangkok. It was a nice hotel with a good breakfast and a lovely pool area. The advantage of being on the river was we used the hop on hop of ferry every day to get around. We went to all of the temples Grand palace etc.

We went to China town one night for food. We also went to Iconsiam which was a big shopping mall but had a fabulous food area with loads of choices to eat and drink.
We then flew to Chiangmai and really enjoyed that. So we had a week there.
We flew to Krabi and stayed in Ao Nang. Ao Nang was ok a bit tacky but very handy to go to islands. We did a few island tours from there. We spent our last 10 days in Khao Lak and we really liked that. Overall we had a great trip and I would recommend it. The weather was fab and the sea was lovely and warm for swimming.
We did download grab for taxis in Bangkok. We also brought a bit of cash as most of the tours and markets and small restaurants only took cash.
We were also celebrating our anniversary 40years 🥰.

I celebrated my 50th in November, myself and my wife went on a similar trip. booked it all myself as it gave much more control. we had a great time and i wouldn't change a thing if i was to book again…

We flew from Dublin to Singapore with Etihad and availed of the free stopover in a hotel in Abu Dhabi for two nights - Lovely place and 'Teamlabs planets' in Abu Dhabi there is amazing. Singapore was also amazing, supertree grove, gardens by the bay , chinatown ect - it was just brilliant. Stayed there for a few days

when finished in singapore i flew to Krabi and stayed in Ao Nang, took trips to kong island, Railey beach ect - Loved it all !

Flew to Shanghai after that via Bangkok, Id highly recommend this , Shanghai was just amazing - So safe, Modern and clean and flights were cheap and high end hotels were a very good price, its just another world ! , from there we flew home. One of the best holidays we ever had, and we travel quite a bit !

Oh wow Coleen & Moreilly both your trips sounds amazing. Moreilly that was some itinerary would you mind me asking how long you went for in total. Shanghai is one to look into. I just want to thank everyone for sharing there experiences as it’s such a wealth of knowledge especially when trying to trying to book such a special trip

I think i was around 16/17 nights total - we couldn't go for two long as we had the kids being minded at home by my parents ,didn't want to take too much of an advantage of them !! Would have loved to stay longer, but in fairness we never felt rushed . I chose the destinations and route as i wanted a mix of city and scenery ect. just a big verity in destinations ie.. going from modern spotless Singapore to ao nang is a big contrast and we loved it, taking the long boat to Raily beach and the tour boat to Kong island -( its amazing and like the Thailand you imagine from photos, pure stunning scenery). As for Shanghai………… I cannot stress this enough…..Just go. it is amazing, the cost of the flight's are really good from Thailand, its an unreal city. Singapore was one of the safest and cleanest city's I've ever been to, Gardens by the bay, supertree grove ect… , i wasn't expecting shanghai to be similar, we walked the streets very late at night and always felt safe. I've already booked flights back to China this year as i was so impressed with it, the are light years ahead of us…!. The trip was for my 50th, i always said id do something a bit special for it and it ended up being the best trip i ever had !

If you've never been to Thailand, you'll think Samui is great. However, it's the cesspit of Thailand, IMHO (been travelling to Thailand for 15 years now).

If you want genuine island / beach vibes, look to the East… Koh Chang / Koh Kood. And an easy 5-hour (about 3000 baht) private trip from BKK, or if you're on a budget you can bus it for a hew hundred baht.

On the subject of airlines, has anyone used Thai airways to fly to Bangkok? How do they compare to BA?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 15,627 ✭✭✭✭retalivity

Pattaya is the cesspit, Samui is more an armpit, like parts of Phuket 😁

I flew Thai Airways internally and externally around Asia and they were fine, standard flag carrier fare, a bit better than BA in my opinion. I only flew with them 5/6h max, no long-long distance however, like Heathrow to BKK.

Flew KLM Premium Comfort last June (family of 4) return for 4500 (PC was about 1000 extra but we booked early).

    Well worth it. Flew Dublin-Ams-Bkk.

    Our itinerary:

    • 4 x Bangkok
    • 5 x Koh Tao (flew Bkk to Chumphon - Air Asia - and took ferry)
    • 6 x Chiang Mai (ferry from Koh Tao to Koh Samui and flight up to Chiang Mai - Bangkok Airways)
    • 5 x Luang Prabang Laos (flew Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang - Laos Air)
    • 3 x Bangkok (flew Luang Prabang to BKK - Air Asia)
    • Home

There was a good bit of hustle for our visit but that's the way we like it. Plus, we didn't bring the kids devices so their motivation levels were through the roof.

Thailand is stunning and we'll be back in a year.

Would going in June put you off given the weather in June? I am weighing up the options of going as flight prices work out for me.

How did you find Luang Pabang? We haven't been there since 2010 and would love to go back, but we're afraid, after 16 years, there'll be massive change (and not for the good!)

First visited LP with couple of friends in 2015 and always wanted to re-visit when the kids got a bit older (they are 13 and 8 now).

While we enjoyed it, it wasn't the same experience for me as the first time and herself also didn't find it as great as I had hyped. She did enjoy it though but she would have probably preferred another pit-stop in Thailand.

My first visit was in January - recent trip in June - so that played a part in sight-seeing. Kuang Si this time was an absolute flood and certainly not the crystal blue pools of water I had experienced previously! It was more expensive but we weren't particularly bothered with that. I actually spotted one guy who was a regular in the bowling alley in 2015!

We did enjoy it - and it was great to add a different experience and country for the kids - but it wasn't as unique as it was in 2015. Laos is beautiful though and the Mekong is just magnetic for some reason.

I would go back to Laos, but not to LP.
