But we finished 3rd in the 23/24 season so even if Pep's City didn't exist we weren't winning the title that season

What sort of a gap would you have expected to form when a team nets 61 points out of a possible 63?

City were ten points lower last season by game 21 compared to game 21 of 2019/20.

Next you'll be saying we only won the league because of the Pandemic!

I believe that record stretched to 26 wins out of our first 27. Sounds unbelievable as I type it but that's the stat I read. Something that will never be repeated if you ask me.

Posted this back in January, we've now gone behind 13 times this season and our record from there is:

    1 win, 2 draws, 10 losses.

    No fightback in this team.

Anyone still defending this shambles? Slot has to go. Not making Champions league in such a poor standard league is unforgettable

I think taking our foot off the throttle last year was a mistake. Although I do realise that it's near impossible to play to a level when there's no pressure on you. Still at the top level I don't think you can switch it back on easily when you've switched off. Just didn't sit right with me thinking of the Liverpool way back in the day.

Edit, always loved the way they used to toss the winner medals at them at the first training session back, "here ya go last year's winners medal, bit worthless now, this is this season."

Certainly not 22 points regardless of the record start by liverpool,we won the league that season because we were outstanding and relentless, that also doesn't change the fact that City's form fell off a cliff from the previous campaign, you do know that both scenarios can be true.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,172 ✭✭✭giveitholly

No at this stage I don't think anyone can defend it,he needs to go. Unfortunately it looks like the decision makers at the club are.

It doesnt matter how many good footballers you have - if you're getting outrun by upwards of 5km by the opposition team, you're more than likely going to lose the game in this day and age. One point from Wolves, Spurs and Brighton is totally unacceptable, when we're already under pressure for CL next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,113 ✭✭✭riddles

Its mind boggling after the PSV game a contingency plan wasnt made 48 points with 10 ganes to go / 1 point from wolves spurs brighton subsequently absolute joke. Two wins there and we'd 2 more wins and a bag of draws to probably secure it. FSG seem have binned the multi club ownership thing that was floated. Not what will unfold from here.

Chelsea havent won at Everton in 8 games so there is that.

Let's not forget Klopp brought the club from relative obscurity to a Premier League win and left the foundations for Slot. Slot said himself that he 'couldn't have asked for a better team' and that 'his philosophy is similar to Klopp's'.

The team Klopp built won the league for him. Yes, he made subtle changes e.g. Gravenberch, but not exactly earth shattering that decision is it? The longer Slot has had with this group, the worse we have become.

I actually find your response to my comment a bit more childish than my post.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,172 ✭✭✭giveitholly

This tweet sums up perfectly how I feel,no one can take away what he achieved last season. There is no need to try downgrade it,or insult the man. Thank him for what we can all agree was a fabulous season and move on.

I think the manager might say injuries, imbalances etc but I think the.two styles/philosophies etc are night and day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 12,189 ✭✭✭✭J Mysterio

Agreed. In fact, I recall Slot outlining some criticisms of Klopp's' style, which I believe related to 'control'. One might have expected those changes to be subtle, but - as you say - it is night and day. We have gone from 'Heavy Metal football' to... 'Whale sounds'?

As each players form started to drop off very few have bounced back and Slot's system tweaks this season haven't worked at all.

👍, Why do you think he is a fraud

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 12,189 ✭✭✭✭J Mysterio

I think one of the most serious issues is his poor man management. Players in bad form aren't dropped, and other players don't get a chance to start, even when they have done well in the short cameos he rarely affords them.

I think another issue is he threw in all the new players without taking more time to integrate them and allow them to earn their place. For example, I think Kerkez is coming good, but the treatment of Robinson (a leader in the team) was poor.

Let's not talk about Federico '15 minutes' Chiesa.

We also unnecessarily removed depth in players like Elliot or Quansah, who also didn't get a fair crack of the whip. These were very good squad players who had a role to play in the team.

To quote myself to add a Slot comment from August 2024:

"The slight difference is that after we win the ball I like to go forward as Jurgen liked it but I sometimes like it when players try to keep the ball and not play the difficult ball."

And we wonder why the team is so stilted?

He's not a fraud. That sort of language says more about the person saying it than the recipient.

He's a very good manager and will probably have success in the future but this job has gotten away from him. He's not the only one, the City job looks to be getting away from Guardiola too. It happens.

It’s time. Been a shambles since the start. Only for the lucky 5 wins at the start we would be similar to spurs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,113 ✭✭✭riddles

Even though i was Slot out from a long way back i had some sympathy with him in that what he didnt know about a job like liverpool like rotation etc and dealing with ego's is not something you learn over night. I now have moved on, his lack of pragmatism is nothing short of incredible. It borders on arrogance really. 12 players have played 87% of all the PL minutes and considering the level of under performance of some you cant be successful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,406 ✭✭✭shamrock55

Just seen the score now as i was away.

Im laughing my ass off tbh because it was so predictable.

Just get rid of slot now and take half these clowns with him.

This will never change while slot is still here.

The players are to blame too of course

I’m not sure a fraud can win the premier league title in the modern era to be honest. But what I am sure of is that there is no future in this. Slot will most likely have successful stints elsewhere but it’s clear that he just can’t cope with PL sides. It’s over. I’ve said it before but it’s Déjà vu every week. No running. No intensity. No progress. Weak mentality. 4 wins in last 13 PL games is nowhere close to good enough. If Xabi is open to it I would pull the trigger during Int break.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,660 ✭✭✭lee_baby_simms

Rotation was a big concern of mine last season. He had a myopic view of the squad and do stupid things playing same squad week in week out then playing the reserves for a cup game with no senior players on the bus and losing. Salah was more pivotal in winning us the title last season more than Slot in my view.

If Xavi came in and didnt get CL it would be one thing right now it looks like we wont get CL footie.

Literally the only variable is when Isak comes back and if he can do anything as Slot seems incapable of lifting things. No matter what happens next Slot has to go at the end of the season and attracting a replacement without CL football and no transfer budget is not going to be easy

For me the wind down and party after securing the title was where it all went wrong, and I was categorically opposed to that mentality. I still can't fathom what the thinking was. Basically he told the team to give up, and take effectively 4 months off or whatever when you include Summer. At that point you are relying on the individuals to mentally climb back up the ladder again to be premier league champs, and physically put the effort in too, that is a very difficult mentality to get to again imo. Jota's passing then stunted the effort too. Teams like United with Keane, or Leeds with Giles who had won titles would have been absolutely gunning to go again the next season.

I know people gave a lot of grace for the players etc., but for Slot, it was still his first season, and he way jumped the gun on that. Maybe after 5 or 6 gangbuster seasons something like that might be acceptable, but even then I dunno. Personally I think that decision is worse than any of his tactics, losses, lack of player rotations etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,113 ✭✭✭riddles

30% of the PL goals and assists last season came from Salah last season - just over 12% this season. Line breaking passes to him down 70%

Slots system changes and player changes = scoring less and conceding more.

    -23 Goals

    +10 Goals

I suppose whenever I think about the absence of a proven 25 goal a season striker like Isak I then ask myself is one single lethal goalscorer the answer to this team's many problems and the answer is alway no. sadly.
