Slightly smaller screen on the launch

They are running the new 16" screen at the old resolution of 1920x1200, so no difference at the moment. Whether that will change with future updates, who knows.

Who cares about passengers. If they've got any complaints they can walk :)

3 years in and if I'm in the first row of the grid on the way to Aldi, I am absolutely checking what's beside me at the lights to see if I need to use all that power from the off or if I can "play with my food" for a bit. Yes, I'm an immature child.

Generally my cars have been pretty slow, though had a nice c220 twin turbo that was quick enough. I've only driven a Model 3 on a test drive but I can't get over the acceleration, and that was just a standard RWD...

I don't think I'd be upgrading for quicker acceleration, but it must be fun all the same!

I was lucky to have a few Sporty Honda Civics when I was younger, thank goodness they were on company insurance.

But my "Slow" Model Y is more powerful even with the extra weight, the Hondas only gave good performance in a narrow power band, ie revved up 🙂. You also felt the speed being so close to the ground.

That makes a lot more sense, I’ve seen chaps advertise that on Facebook but didn’t realise you could get it for the new Y, still not available for my highland.
Not worried about the colour, hitch or assisted autopilot.

I'd have noted your red calipers and wouldn't be suckered into embarrassing myself 🙂

If a demo came up I could use the trade in booster against I might bite, interested to see what the 7 seater is going to cost, it’s a €2500 extra in Germany but it looks like with Vrt etc it’s going to drive up the awd premium price by €6000 here.

It's about a week since we got the delivery of the AWD and here are first impressions compared to the 2021 Model 3 AWD. We had a good spin on the familiar to me roads in Co. Wicklow to get to know it.

The suspension it definitely more floaty but tightens up a nicely when pushed a bit and the car is actually fun to drive on more challenging roads. I feel that it strikes just the right balance for the Irish roads. The only small negative is that unlike this, you could drive the 3 with total disregard for the roads conditions as it just coped with any ridges etc, but here I got close to the limits of the rear suspension travel on the way down from Wicklow Gap towards Hollywood on one particular jump at a corner entering a bridge. No drama but I think the 3 never felt like it was going to bottom out. The steering feels really precise, have it set to heavy, but the ratio is noticeably slower than on the 3. I would have liked to keep the faster steering as it was quite handy at the street corners but it still gets a nod from me all in all. The car noise levels are dramatically better and you can actually listen the music at motorway speeds. I had to take the mid-bass down a notch to make the sound to my liking, but the system sounds great after that. Too early to say anything about the range but it's at least on the par with the old car. The seats are very comfortable and feel more natural and cooler than in the old car and this is before using the seat fans. I dropped down the driver's seat as low as it goes and this made the car feel more sporty. I remember when I test drove the original Y it felt a bit like a van to drive compared to 3 but don't get the same feeling with the Juniper.

The controls are a downgrade, I wish they had kept the right stalk for direction and AP functions and also the extra functions for the lights on the left stalk. This is the only real downgrade, and you need a workaround of toggling between two driver profiles to switch between the auto steer and just the cruise control.

So, all of the above was without mentioning the real reason we changed, i.e. the Y has way more usable space and utility compared the 3. The improvement in refinement and feel of the cabin is vast compared to our old 3, and also compared the original Y. One thing very noticeable is a total lack of any creaks and rattles on this. I'm really looking forward to the introduction of the FSD in Europe which will make this car an amazing long distance machine, which is what we bought it for. For anything local with 1/2 occupants the i3 will continue to ace over the pristine and dent free Y.

    Nice, enjoy.

You can always buy aftermarket Enhance stalk for the RHS AP function, they are a 10min fit, I have mine fitted for over a year now and they perform perfectly and not an invasive fit, just stick to the steering column

Well written evftw, I would agree with your early impressions even though I am coming from a RWD M3 to a RWD MY.

Handling seems excellent for a big lump of car, though the standard tyres on mine, Continentals, do loose grip earlier than the Michelin Pilot Sports on my old 3.

Refinement is a major improvement, almost lack of wind noise, makes the radio/music a pleasure, not needing to increase volume at higher speeds/rough roads.

Looking forward to throwing a bike in the back without disassembly, just waiting on the complete set of 3W mats with carpet inlays. (Bloody expensive, hope they are worth it.)

Where and how are you driving a Model Y that you're "losing grip", or is it just a saying?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,885 ✭✭✭eagerv

I think we all try, well I do anyway 😁, perhaps the exit on a favourite quiet roundabout. Roads have been quite greasy also. The Contis on my Y have a few mills less thread than the Michelins which were excellent grip in all conditions.

I have those very same mats since the day one. They fit really well and the fabric inlays are nice too.

Fit a hardwired stalk. Takes about 20 minutes and looks OEM. There are stick-on options, but as you only need one stalk, the hardwire version for the juniper is a no-brainer.

From 1:30 the gear selector stalk

Looks like a really well designed product. It almost looks like Tesla designed one to be added.

Did you have an OG MY before this evftw?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,875 ✭✭✭...Ghost...

Funny you should say that, because you need to pop the top cowl off to install the stalk and there is a track the stalk base slots into and is then locked in with a bolt. It's almost like Tesla just decided not to install the stalk 😂. The stalk comes with a new cowl piece which has the cut-out for the stalk to clear stick out. You just have to run a couple of wires dow to the foot well where there is an OBD connector behind the side wall trim piece….same spot the COMMANDER module plugs in…and I definetely recommend getting one of those.

No, but I did test drove both MIC and MIG OGs beforehand. They drove very similarly to my old 3, just a bit slower and a bit less body control. And a much higher seating position which made the driving experience different I noticed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,502 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

That's weird, I can't get as low in the new Juniper (standard) compared to the OG MY at all. Must be some funky ergonomics/geometry at play perhaps, rationally they must be identical you'd think.

There's a few more in Inventory atm… One has 9km on the clock with €930 reduction…

Careful on that one, looks like it has the previous gen battery (looking at the range) which is about 4kWh less usable

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,885 ✭✭✭eagerv

There is a new Premium RWD in inventory atm. €45058 with latest spec. (Presumably).

Wouldn't say it will last long..

    Edit. Gone

That was quick… Just shows that there's a ready market for them. They would probably sell a lot more if they could get more deliveries of the popular specs. Alas, Ireland is but a distraction to the much bigger UK market.

The same discontinued specs were also popular in the UK. I and others here were lucky that we got our orders honoured. Tesla manufactured a new batch of them, no doubt helped by the number on order in the UK. Our market as you say is small.

Any cancelled orders going into Inventory will no doubt sell very quickly, imo they are great value compared to the new Standard model.
