Hi, I know Revenue ran a few external competitions this year but does anyone know do they tend to have a time of year they run the competitions or is it completely random? I was on mat leave this year and the timing just wasn’t right at the time but hoping there might be a few in 2026.

I have a level 8 degree, 9 years tax experience across multiple tax heads in a large corporation and a certificate in VAT with AITI. Would I have a shot of getting in at AP level with this?

One of Revenues upcoming competitions is for Assistant Principal Tax Specialist (Various Locations).

Keep an eye on the careers page of the Revenue website. The information booklet will outline the requirements for the role.

Recruitment for Revenue isn’t completely random, but the exact timing does move around a bit each year. They usually announce external competitions when there’s a clear staffing need rather than on a strict annual schedule, so it’s possible you’ll see opportunities again in 2026.

Your background sounds strong. A level 8 degree, nearly a decade of tax experience, and AITI VAT certification would put you in a competitive position for AP level. People with similar profiles have been successful in past rounds.

Like in any field, even water damage restoration, timing and availability matter, so it’s worth keeping an eye on the official site and registering for alerts. You should definitely be in the running when the next competition opens.

2024 and 2025 had AP comps advertised in May. It might be the same again in 2026.

The window for application was quite tight for the 2025 AP, only advertised for 2 weeks. Try and have the form ready to go if you can. Have a look at the new PAS competency statement, as Revenue will look to align with this at some stage: https://www.publicjobs.ie/en/information-hub/capability-framework/assistant-principal-officer

9 years in tax should be great for your application. Revenue interviews are all STAR and stories. If you can confidently talk about tax and have examples of dealing with it then you'll sail into it. A mock interview is very valuable in advance if you're unfamiliar with civil service interviews.

Working as AP in public sector finance - a general role - I would be interested in these tax specific roles - has anyone any experience or knowledge on whether it is possible to make the cut with "general" rather than "specific" experience

Does anyone know what type of roles these are? I see there is transfer pricing mentioned so I would imagine these are all Dublin based positions? Or what types of AP would be in the smaller counties like Mayo/sligo/Leitrim?

    Hi all

Did anyone else apply for the AP role recently with Revenue? I wonder when we will hear if we are successful with getting shortlisted for interview.
