Sean’s performances in Cork recently have shown his ability at the next level. He has a very good chance of progressing in the senior squad over the remained of the season and next season.

He is looking for a spot in a Back row that has Odonoghue, hodnett, kendellen, Quinn and some hybrid 2nd rows so nobody of international quality that he needs to get past.

He will see game time there in the next 12 months .

You mean the player who has had 2 serious Achilles injuries before the age of 23, leading to almost 2 years out of the game.... And yet has already made his Ireland debut this year after only 350 minutes of rugby in two years.

Yeah, that "Ireland" who won't pick him or invest in him.

The persecution complex in that post is hilariously laughable.

Yeah the player who did ridiculously well in the few minutes he got, - solidified the scrum and made 8 or 9 tackles, pinged unfairly by the ref and then dropped from the matchday 23 since with some bs excuse around fitness. Yes. That player.

Ah here, he was never going to get more than a sub appearance against Italy. And he wasn't dropped, Farrell was rotating the squad, just as he is tomorrow giving the likes of Doak a chance.

Edogbo is fresh into the squad and there are established players in front of him. His time will come and he'll probably be capped again in the summer against Japan.

I think Munster are in a good place right now. Except for injury we could have seen Ahern, Nash and Gleeson in this 6 Nations, Casey is a regular. Crowley has taken the 10 jersey. Edwin Edogbo made his debut.

Milne, Loughman, Coombes, Kleyne, Nankivell, Hodnett, Dan Kelly, Ruadhan, Kendellen and Farrell are all International Class, in my opinion.

    Evan O'Connell is nearly there.

I think we are anywhere but in a good place atm.

Poor again at the weekend after an extended break to reset, attack coach who wanted the top job is now leaving which was always on the cards I suppose.

The only international quality players we have are the ones currently involved with Ire..I would add Gleeson with the highest potential to add to that.

Both loosehead props are in due to injury but otherwise would not be looked at in all honesty.

Coombes Kendellan,Quinn,Kelly all have a long road to get to international level. Farrell tbf deserves his opportunity..do i see him at RWC 27...realistically no.

    Nanks I do like tho

Our level right now is where we are at in Europe

We have the players, and as I said a lot more would be internationals but for injury and the lack of Coombes irish caps is still mystifying.

First year with a new coach, I'm not too stressed, as I said we have the players, and I expect McMillan to bring in his own coaches (and hopefully a tighthead)

Coombes has several far superior players ahead of him. Its not a mystery

The munster squad is not in a great place for me. For me, the following positions need addressing;-

    1. Tighthead.

    2. Tighthead lock to replace kleyn.

    3. Back up 9.

    4. Back up 10.

    5. Playmaking 15.

Whether thats by players internally improving or recruitment.

Its a big ask. We need to be producing more of our own. Signs of that are coming tbf.

Squad as of right now isnt great imo.

I thought he'd be gone at the end of the season, but didn't think he'd retire. Maybe the numerous recent injuries made up his mind.

Great servant over the years, our scrum always looked better when he was at 2

Some record for that position - generally felt he didnt get the credit he deserved, a very solid nuts & bolts hooker.

He's had a great provincial career with a few Irish caps thrown in for good measure.

Hope whatever his next plans are as successful for him.

Didn't offer as much in the loose offensively as the likes of Sheehan (who does though?). Good man for an occasional turnover on the deck (along with some silly penalties!).

Proper old school hooker, Herring is another like that

Got me thinking about the brothers that have togged out in red

Wallace (x3)/Wycherley/Scannell/Edogbo... any others in the professional era I'm missing ...?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 5,320 Mod ✭✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Timmy and Dave Ryan. Think John Hayes brother Tom played few games before going to england. Barry and Ronan O Mahony. Bill and Dave Johnson.

    Donnacha and David... another pair

Wonder is it as prevalent in the other provincial teams…

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 5,320 Mod ✭✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Donnacha and David. assume you mean o callaghan they werent brothers.

Leinster have had a few sets. McCarthys, Byrnes, Osbornes and Kearneys in the present and relative recent past.

Connacht cant think of many bar debuitlears and Murrays in recent times.

Ulster again only Humphreys and Wards in recent times. probably few more in decades past

Ryan? Donnacha Ryan is from Nenagh. Dave Ryan is from Cork. Definitely not brothers.

And Donncha O'Callaghans brother is Ultan.

Eoin Reddan's brother played rugby but I don't know if he ever played for Munster, his father Don played for Munster & Connacht

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,730 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

The Fitzgeralds (from Clare) played together for Connacht.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,766 ✭✭✭leakyboots

Ha, yeah I meant O'Callaghan and yes, thought all this time they were brothers...!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,790 ✭✭✭theVersatile

Funny one this, although they never played together provincially, Trevor and Ray Hogan played together with Ireland A.

@Lost Ormond you might confirm if they're brothers or cousins, believe they are both Nenagh?

Nice article on his patreon by TRK on Niall Scannell, here's a snippet:

"Niall Scannell captained the Ireland 20s in the 2012 IRB Junior World Championship, but it took him a while to fully get going at Munster.

He spent two years in the Munster sub-academy, then two years in the full academy before going on back-to-back development deals.

One turning point, oddly enough, came from the outside. When Rob Penney brought Eusebio Guiñazú in on a short-term loan in late 2014, Scannell was fourth choice. Fourth choice, and they still went and signed another man. It would have broken a lot of players or had the same impact as a bucket of cold sick down their back. Instead, Scannell did something smarter — he picked the Argentinian’s brain. Guiñazú’s message was simple, and it was probably exactly what Scannell needed to hear.

    That’s not you.

At the time, Scannell was firmly behind Duncan Casey, Mike Sherry and Damian Varley, and he was on the dreaded ticking time bomb of one-year development deal extensions. Munster weren’t sure on him, something proven by the short-term signing of Guiñazú.

But what Guiñazú told Niall Scannell was vital to his career.

Stop trying to be Mike Sherry.

Stop trying to make breaks off the edge of the defensive line.

You’re a big scrummager, physical in the tight, and your breakdown work has to be unbelievable. Get better at what you’re good at.

“He really broke it down with me,” Scannell said years later. “And Eusebio really helped me. He still keeps in contact with me a lot.” That kind of clarity — knowing exactly what you are, and committing to it completely — is rarer than it sounds. A lot of careers never find it."

Its a really nice article to close out the career of a really important team member over the last decade - quite insightful.

Have Munster announced a travelling squad to SA. I hope Casey gets to travel with the squad.

I assume Loughman won't make it as he was injured for the wee game
