I was chatting to the pro today and apparently the course is in very good nick with no drainage issues to report.

Really looking forward to this one. The last time I played here was at a Boards outing a good few years ago. Myself and @Break80 were playing as a two-ball at the back of the field. Halfway around we realised we had been playing off the wrong tees we should have been on the greens but were playing off the whites instead, so we were giving a few extra yards to the field 😁.
Thankfully the Captain of the day didn't disqualify us and Break80 managed to pick up the winning prize.
I also remember a bit of controversy over choosing the 18th as the longest drive hole I think I might have been the only one who thought it was a good idea😂.
For anyone who hasn’t played it, this is a cracking parkland course built on an old estate where you drive right into the middle of the course, similar to Carton House. Every time I’ve played it the greens have been superb. The 9th is a lovely walled-garden hole, and my personal favourite is the 13th a picturesque par 4 with some well-positioned trees and a pond guarding the front of the green.
I remember watching one of the lads (one of our founders I think) teeing it up on the 10th and somehow managing to hit the tree right beside the tee box. The ball ricocheted off the cabin roof beside it, bounced off a few parked cars, and somehow ended up back near the tee box again 😂.

GolfNet will open for booking from 20:00 tomorrow evening.

    Cost 45 euro

I had a look through the threads from our previous visits in 2016 & 2017.

2016 was the day that @Alanm broke 80 for the first time. I would fancy your chances of repeating that but I will be really impressed if you can hit 44 points again :)

Looking forward to the return here. Dont think I played great when last there with boards.

But it is the site of my largest win at my home club. We were hosting some interclub a few years ago, so we were given New Forrest for the day.

I shot a 78 off the whites, but there was a PCC of 3 on the day, which ended giving me my lowest ever differential of 1.7.

I've shot lower gross scores but never a lower differential.

Think I won the club comp by 5 or 6 points.

Would be doing well to repeat anything close to it on my current form, but if I can get even close to it I'll have had a good day.

Its a class course with a lovely mix of holes and it's a good test.

I remember that long drive on 18 from the green tees with the society, was a completely silly choice. If you were able to hit the ball more than 200 yards you basically had to slice the ball to have a chance of holding the fairway as it was a sharp dogleg from the green tees. I remember TheChamp was in my group that day and hit a good high "power fade", can't remember if it held up to win on the day

Thanks @paulos53 just went back and read those reports from 2016,2017. Sounds like a great course - looking forward to it.

@tigerwood1 So I take it you're picking the 18th for longest drive then? 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 352 ✭✭tigerwood1

    I wouldn't be brave enough, I would be lynched🤣🤣🤣.

I quite like a long drive on a hole that isn't a definite driver hole. Obviously not one where you can't hit driver, but one where you're bringing danger into play. It really opens up who can win, some of the bigger lads might not even hit driver.

I'm a big fan of this course. In my 20s I used to play here, Esker and tullamore a few times each each year. And I've played it a couple of times in recent years and am booked in to play in may. So if I bomb I can't blame the course.

The 9th is obviously a signature hole, but the two par 3s on the back 9 are cracking holes. For those who don't like long par 3s, be warned, they're long! A couple of the par 5s I remember being proper par 5s too. And some great par 4s too - 4th, 7&8, 13&14. Just a great course. With the exception of 12. An utterly stupid hole. I always need convincing of the merit of trees in the middle of the fairway, but this is the worst one I know of. I believe some people love this hole.

Not so sure who is going to be booking on Golfnet tonight at 8pm

but if anyone is interested in playing New Forrest, booking will open this evening at 7pm on ClubNet 😜

I was a member here for several years. Only left as I moved house. It's a great course. Can be a bit wet in winter.

Would love to join you for a bit of nostalgia but I can't make that day.

    You will enjoy.

think the last time we played there might have been Ryder Jug?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 549 ✭✭✭a post punk

Correct my year as Captain …and I witnessed a hole in 1 on the walled par 3 from the Reps!! Safe to say we didn’t have our best stuff in our group that day but still got the W overall in the end 💪💪

any idea about whether visitors spots might be available on this one?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 352 ✭✭tigerwood1

We have 21 members signed up so far. The course is looking for final numbers by the weekend, so if anyone else is planning to play please get your name down as soon as possible.
If there are still spaces after that, we’ll open them up to visitors from Monday week.

I work with two members and they were telling me today it’s in very decent shape thankfully.
looking forward to playing it again, haven’t played it in a few years. Tough but enjoyable course.

I think its a cracking course! A real hidden gem. One I never knew much about until we played it a few years ago and one I was really looking forward too and sadly cant make due to family commitments. #Raging

This is a mad one...I can normally remember a course very well..But limited memory of this one (The aging process)

When was boards there last ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 9,142 ✭✭✭spacecoyote

Probably not far off 10 years for an outing, jug maybe a little closer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 330 ✭✭Sorbet

2016& 2017 regular outing and 2018 Jug according to Seve’s all about Boards post.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 352 ✭✭tigerwood1

I know what you mean. There was a time when I could remember every hole of any course I’d played even shot by shot (and that was usually a lot of shots 😁). These days though, there are probably three holes on this course that I just can’t picture.
The walled garden hole is pretty unique. I think there’s only one other in Ireland, at Coolattin Golf Club (I stand to be corrected).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,203 ✭✭✭bobster453

I think could be wrong, that Cobh has a walled garden Par 3.15th hole if I remember right.

Found the scorecard, it was a very good day… 44 pts with a scratch!

I might be a little tricky repeating alright, maybe time for me to break 70 for the first time… even then, I wouldn't be close
