DXhound2005: "Another signal appears for short times on 1205"

Its due to strong signal (outside the MW band) overload and mixing on the Malin SDR, the operator is a ham and I think transmits 'WSPR', so when that transmits it causes mixing etc on his SDR, temporarily affecting reception on MW, an image of BBC R5L has appeared around there when that happens.

1125 is carrying this weekend's Weekend Music Radio edition. It has been on irregularly during the week with mostly Laser 558. 1125 is an empty frequency in Europe, so the trace of a signal which can be seen on SDR's is the pirate.

BBC closing Radio Jersey and Radio Guernsey on Medium Wave. I did manage to pick out Radio Jersey on 1026 kHz back when Downtown was there. It is still a busy frequency, best way to identify it is when it is carrying Five Live overnight. No chance for Guernsey in Ireland, it is on 1116 kHz along with BBC Radio Derby. Derby is easy to hear where I am. Recordings courtesy of a Digital Spy contributor.

dxhound2005 " No chance for Guernsey in Ireland"

It (1116) certainly has been audible (albeit very weak) in the middle of the day (groundwave) on a car radio with good AM on the south coast of Ireland (path across sea in that general direction). not really listenable a short distance inland though.

RiRa returns to the airwaves from Sunday March 1st.

This time on a 30 day licence, their press release mentions their aim to get a national FM licence (there isn't one) , that the station is aimed at 15-24 year olds (a demographic that doesn't listen to traditional radio) and is sponsored by the RSA (along with other grants ie its public money).

If RiRa believed in these objectives than they should push DAB+

ironic that a privately owned, commercial orientated station is being funded by the hard pressed tax payer in pursuit of a non existent licence and audience. I’d be mightily surprised if any more FM licences are forthcoming let alone a National one. Amazing the doors the cupla focal opens….

some transmitters for temporary FM transmission of Ri-Ra now on (Dublin 105.2 not on, Cork 87.7 came on, but off again) , silent audio presently, but RDS is present

    87.7 Cork

    87.9 Galway

    105.2 Dublin

    105.5 Limerick

radio na life 106.4 has been off air since early this morning. No carrier or TX.

All the other signals from the same facility seem to be operating as normal.

Maybe the Ri-Ra people carried out a preemptive strike on one of their rivals?!

There are now four remote FM receivers in Ireland, was only two a while back. The Tipperary one is picking up Ri Ra from both Cork 87.7 and Limerick 105.5 at good strength. Gives the transmitters information as Farmer Cross 5.012 kW, Woodcock Hill 0.25 kW. Bit less strong on 105.2 on the Louth one, something gone wrong with their information.

    UR-3 Radio Kultura Lyubeshiv [UKR] 5 kW [V] • 2139 km • 84°

1188AM clear across Dublin today ,previously 1143AM

    Energy 1440 also on air.

Nothing On FM in Dublin in the pirate sense

jaysus I’d feel weird about using 1188am .. cursed frequency after Cookies crimes! That said I did hear NEARfm randomly play the DA Band a few weeks ago (the Radio Dublin theme tune)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,150 ✭✭✭Infoanon

I was thinking the same thing..…

738 or 819 would be more appropriate given the day that's in it.

So has Retro FM, which broadcasted mainly on Sundays, called it a day? Has it been on at all since the new year?

There is a lot of activity on Shortwave connected with Iran. A new Numbers Station in Farsi, could be a false flag by Mossad or a real one for Iranian spies. USAF messages are busier than usual.

I just heard very heavy jamming on 13755 kHz, and I see that the transmission being jammed is from Radio Farda in Persian/Farsi. This was one of the stations like Voice of America which Trump almost wiped out. If anyone wants to hear jamming they can listen on one of the online SDR's. Signal being heard well in Ireland and lots of other places. Transmission listed to end at 1700 UTC.

There are some excellent videos online about 'number ' stations , who would have thought that in 2026 number stations would still be crucial.

These intermittent transmissions started on Saturday and do appear to be coming from Iran.

I have 13755 kHz saved on a memory in my receiver because it is a morning (night for them) frequency for Radio New Zealand. In the March to October season 11725 is in use more. There is a really good signal from New Zealand these mornings on 11725, even on a portable. Especially good on the North West SDR's in Ireland.

I saw an online report of a 50 watt pirate operating on 1611 kHz. I got fairly good reception and assumed it was the Dundalk pirate at reduced power. But then I found the Dundalk station on 1593, ID as Kiss AM at the usual +60 dB. Traces of both on SDR's, a little bit of audio on the Malin one. Might improve as darkness descends.

The very defintion of an intermittent operation 1593 was on overnight Tuesday/Wednesday this week.

The frequency is not an association that the general public would make, only anoraks/DXers. The last time it appears Radio Dublin was using 1188 was 1992 or so. In later years Radio Dublin announced as being "100FM" and subsequently there was no issue seen with (the current) Radio Nova also announcing "100FM".

The same slot on the MW band was also used by the offshore Radio Caroline for spells to 1977 (consulting the internet) , which would have had a nighttime following in Dublin/Ireland, though the station announced a significantly inaccurate wavelength of 259 metres (instead of 253 metres) to rhyme with Caroline.

1188kHz appears to be allocated to Ireland and was used for a time elsewhere in the country (Cork) by RTE

you’re absolutely correct, but using it would still give me the ick .. I’d be thinking of the various creeps that inhabited the frequency prior.

I look forward to hopefully hearing them back on again shortly (no matter what frequency)

07 March from 11 pm to midnight, Radio Six International did a test transmission on 1467 kHz. From the Trans World Radio transmitter in France, one million watts. It was a mighty strong signal. I don't know if they intend to do any more. The main man is Tony Currie, who I thought might have some pirate background. But it seems he has always kept on the right side of the line.

Does this mean that Radio Six International has been doing pirate broadcasts? According to that first link, it has also been on short wave and FM, presumably in Scotland.

By the way, I briefly heard 1188kh (or 253 metres as pre previous posts) on Saturday morning in Nutgrove. It was relaying a Canadian jazz station. Presumably that is Radio Daniella. I also noticed that Energy Power AM moved from 1440kh (208 metres) to 1431kh. Its signal was really good around Nutgrove. What is that in metres?

What I presume is Energy on 1440 is relaying Caroline, same as 648 and 1368. 1431 is Weekend Music Radio from Scotland, tranmitter could be in Ireland?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,150 ✭✭✭Infoanon

The 'Energy' 1431 relay of Caroline North is a few seconds ahead of the Manx 1368 relay.

As an aside ,The Iranian 'numbers ' station is now being jammed .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,892 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

Energy was definitely on 1431 on Saturday. All very confusing!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 24,509 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

I did not hear Caroline on 1431, it was on 1440 at the same time as I heard WMR on 1431. WMR heard in Finland at that time as well. The numbers station is most likely not an Iranian operation. Moved frequency to 7842.

    9:45 pm last night —

1431 — (WMR) and 1440 — (Energy) at the same time making the trip across the Irish Sea with fading but listenable on a XHDATA D-808.

BBC World Service in English on 1386 kHz from Lithuania. Strong signal with me. It replaced Radio Liberty which Trump defunded last July. The World Service does not observe clock changes, sticking to GMT all year round. So if this transmitter follows that regime, the transmission will start at 19:30 our time from 29 March.
