Nothing quite so dramatic. It was more "Huh. I didn't realise Iran had a ship out thataway."

Oh, there's no justifying a deliberate attack on a school, but yes, it seems likely it was a munition which missed. No consolation for the families, but there's a slight mens rea difference. You may not have noticed, but I have said nothing about the Iranian attacks which are hitting hotels, apartments, or other civilian infrastructure in the Gulf states as being war crimes either. As near as I can tell, they are just pretty lousy shots.

Not sure why anyone would try to defend Hegeseth on his stupid rules of engagement comment. He didn't even explain what he meant by his comments. Imagine running defense for a prick like that?

    It's not the only district.

The current incumbent in my local, 23, is a moderate republican, who actually has the Trump endorsement. Not only has he received fewer votes than his substantially more conservative opponent, but yesterday the GOP asked Gonzales not to run, pursuant to an ethics investigation (He had an affair with his married aide). Indicating a likelihood that it also is going to move more conservative.

However, if the votes for the Democrat primary are an indicator, there's a chance the seat could flip no matter which of the two candidates win.

Anyone can have 'questions'. The laws of war are customarily assumed to be in force in any armed conflict, be it declared war or not. https://www.icrc.org/en/article/faq-international-armed-conflict

From your article quoting a lawyer:

It must work well or they wouldnt persist with it.....I suspect a long long time as they are hypocrites as well as morons....I think the maga morons understand to some degree perhaps the letter of the laws that suit them

But don't give muchnof a sh1t about the spirit in which they were intended as that doesn't suit...and completely ignore anything that would run counter to their desires

+ the most important point....they are morons.. which sort of renders the preceding moot.

So really you do pretty much whatever the **** you want as long as you sporadically say the things they want to hear and they'll keep eating any old horseshit you serve them!

Yes, I'm familiar with that document, which also states…

So which RoE's are "stupid" according Hegseth, which you are intent on making excuses for? Because he wasn't forthcoming with that particular information.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 17,702 Mod ✭✭✭✭Manic Moran

Pull on the thread a little… What would be the case if those specific ROEs were deleted? Not changed, not altered, just removed entirely? How would the authorised actions of military personnel be changed with regards schools prisoners, hospitals, etc?

You forgot to add that 26% favor a republic and 21% a monarchy. What the remaining 33% favor nobody appears to know but I imagine the Kurds who are looking for their own homeland, which would include not just part of Iran but also Iraq, make up a percentage of that 33% and would be opposed by Turkey.

So that is six factions that have nothing in common in all likelihood becoming involved in a civil war. Just what the world needs from an already unstable Middle East, and Europe needs which will result in more migrants fleeing another war.

This present U.S. administration, which you are a supporter of, berates Europe over immigrants when their endless Middle East wars over control of oil are the major factor behind these mass movements of immigrants. The U.S. does not care as it will not effect them, but the irony is completely lost on you.

MS NOW confirms Corey Lewandowski is also out at DHS.

    "Womp womp"*

*In June 2018, former Donald Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski drew intense national criticism for saying "womp womp" on Fox News while a Democratic strategist was recounting the story of a 10-year-old girl with Down syndrome being separated from her mother at the U.S.-Mexico border.

I've asked you a question. Which RoE's are "stupid"?

You seem intent on trying to sane wash this silly comment from Hegseth and everyone here is wondering why.

Pete Hegseth said "no stupid rules rules of engagement", what are those "stupid" rules exactly?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43,671 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

    He will be a loss.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Lewandowski fired a pilot for leaving one of Noem's blankets on a plane, then immediately rehired the pilot when it was discovered that no other pilot could fly them home.

I know what I would have done if I was the pilot.

Oh, I've no idea which ones he was referring to. He's not been any more forthcoming to me than he has been to you. I've already said that what he considers as stupid and what I consider as stupid are not necessarily the same thing.

The point is that he can consider them all stupid (regardless of our personal opinions) and he has the authority to delete all of them if he so desires. If he were to do so (and as far as I know he has not) that does not remove the obligation of US forces to follow the laws of war. Some folks seem to be under the mistaken situation that because he has exception to certain RoE that the US military is suddenly abandoning LoW, which is a very significant distinction.

    Do you accept this distinction?

Sky just had a vox pop of people in texas being asked for their thoughts on Trumps actions

It's depressing to listen to....no concept there just might possibly be other equally or dare I say it more valid opinions

No reasoning, one dipstick with a pair of gold high top runners hanging around his neck

Everyone on the we believe in trump train

Maybe they edit out anyone with a balanced view....but to a man/woman you knew there would be no point having a debate with any one of the geniuses interviewed....facts/logic...none of that would matter

    Utterly depressing.

I recall Hegeseth told his men to ignore legal advice regarding rules of engagement in Iraq, accordingvto his own book covering his time there. I think it's fanciful to suggest this sort of muddled messaging does not lead to laws of war being ignored. He didn't explain what he meant by stupid rules of engagement deliberately.

The US economy lost jobs last month, an unexpected contraction that has renewed questions about whether the labour market in the US might be starting to crack.

Payrolls in the US dropped by 92,000 and the unemployment rate ticked up to 4.4%, according to the latest official figures, surprising analysts who had expected hiring to remain stable.

It appears the US economy really is in the shitter.

It'll be interesting to see what the trend will be like over the next few months. Not good I would imagine given inflation will likely spiral given the situation in the Middle East.

Nobody has said that he has any abilities or not to "remove the obligation of US forces to follow the laws of war". That's not what is in question. People are asking what RoE's are "stupid".

However, you waded in with a blasé defence of his statement originally asking "What's wrong with "no stupid rules of engagement?" and people, including myself, have been asking you why you felt the need to rush to his defence over the last couple of pages. You've now admitted that you've "no idea which ones he was referring to" which makes your original comment seem all the more impetuous, to put it mildly.

Hegseth didn't specify what RoE's he thought were "stupid" and that deliberate vagueness is a serious issue when it's coming out of the mouth of the current SecDef. It doesn't matter whether he can or cannot tackle international law, he still said it. It was a ridiculous and extremely inflammatory remark. Dangerously so.

Whether they, the Texas vox-poppers, agree or disagree with the war isn't really the point. Trump ran on a position of no more foreign wars, that it was the likes of Biden and Harris that wanted war.

And yet here he is, 1 year into his term, launching a war of choice. There was no attack on US, no 9/11, nothing. He choose this. And yet those on the Vox-pop are happy to forget that they decry Biden for his Ukraine war. Remember Trump often repeated line that the 'war would have never happened if I was in charge'. Well it turns out Trump has even less ability to stop wars than Biden.

his use of the title President makes me think that he thinks that he is President of the World and that ultimately he controls the fate of Iran

I wonder what currently serving and veterans think of this chickenshit draft dodger saying things like this? It's so cringe for someone so unmanly to pretend to be John Wayne.

The war in Iran will hurt him at home for only 2 reasons..

Body bags of American troops coming home and the price of a gallon of fuel.

Maga voters don't care what other countries think , they don't care about dead Arabs.

But if they are paying more to fill their ridiculously oversized Truck or they are seeing their sons & daughters coming home in Body bags or with life changing injuries , that will shift them.

And at current performance , both of those things are going to start to happen over the next weeks.

I very much doubt we have any common ground where Trump and his present cabinet of misfits are concerned.

I see them as a bunch of lying conniving psychopaths determined to turn the U.S. into a fascist state, while you as part of their military are happy to follow whatever orders they give you and spend your time on here defending them.

From just the present in Iran we have Trump declaring a few months ago that Iran`s nuclear capabilities were obliterated, to a week ago saying it was his decision to go to war because he had a "feeling" there was going to be an imminent attack by Iran. An attack with what when their nuclear capabilities were obliterated ?

His "feeling" as far as I`m concerned was that he could not go to Congress looking for approval as it would result in him having to admit his obliteration was just another of his lies. With Trump it is even feasible that he saw that Robert Duval had passed away, decided to watch a re-run of Apocalypse Now and with the Epstein files and his low poll ratings, on hearing Duvall utter the lines, "I love the smell of napalm in the morning….Smelled like victory" decided another war was just what he needed to win the mid-terms. Both him and his administration are so unhinged that anything is feasible. They cannot even get their own stories straight on who decided to start this war or what it is meant to achieve.

Trump according to himself started it based on a "feeling". Rubio said it was the Israelis got the ball rolling and the U.S. joined in, but a day later tried to roll back on that, - while still attempting to hold to the line that Iran`s nuclear facilities had been obliterated a few months earlier - and it was Trump`s that started it based on his "feeling" of an imminent attack from drones or something something…. None of them have now any idea of what the desired outcome is. Regime change has gone out the window being replaced by, we will just keep bombing until something happens. What that might be they have no idea. Which from his statement is their war lord Hegseth`s preference, and on past form that of their partner in this Israel. Even if something did happen I doubt the unhinged Hegseth or the Israelis would not find another reason to keep bombing.

As to Hegseth`s rules of engagement I have already addressed that in another post recently.

Not to get personal in any way, but even if he did think anything was illegal he would have to keep it to himself. That's assuming he gets an income stream from followers etc. If not then my point is completely off. So there's no real point arguing with someone who has to toe the line.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,542 ✭✭✭✭everlast75

And who exactly in his cabinet would say otherwise?

Elect a clown... Expect a circus

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43,671 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

So we have an illegal attack on a country, a school full of dead children and the man responsible for all that telling everyone that will listen that rules of engagement are woke and not to be followed.

I would hope the Hague is at least making some notes?

his cabinet does not govern the world. A lot of US business is dependent on foreign monies. They rely on a lot of resources from other countries. There are a lot of countries with significant leverage over the US, whether his cabinet realises or not
