    It's mad isn't it.

If someone had said to me in September, after no wins in 5 and no goals, that going into March we'd be 3 points clear in 4th, I'd have said they were dreaming.

But here we are and everything about the club looks wonky - still posting big losses despite selling almost all our depth. Somehow, like a bad acid flashback we're looking at a starting team with Mings, Buendia, Dougie, Bailey and Tammy on it - with minimal actual new names we can look to for the future. Allyson looks to have potential, but who else really is there for the future - Barkley? Sancho will be gone. Lindelof - I'd probably start him next game, but is he a future signing…

And of course United get another soft Red to their advantage - although they are hardly our battle now. We're reliant on other teams cathcing out Pool and Chelsea for our Champs League hopes - or going all out vs Lille

At least we're not Spurs. With West Ham winning and Forest getting a point against Man City, they are now just one point above the drop.

He needs to go end of season regardless of CL qualification IMO. The squad is in dire need of a refresh. Martinez, Cash, Konsa, Mings, Pau, Digne, Tielemans, McGinn, Buendia and Watkins all either in or leaving their prime and the squad isn’t being refreshed at all.

The next manager probably won’t be quite as good a coach as Unai, but you can’t continue with this project. At some point you have to improve the squad.

I don’t really see many options in terms of changing the players. Abraham instead of Watkins is the only option that isn’t bringing someone in who hasn’t had chances and brought very little. I think it has to be sorted out tactically, we were holding up defensively until tonight and then looked wide open.

We did get hammered by Spurs at home 2 years ago and still managed to make 4th so maybe we can get another turnaround, not sure how.

Been saying this since the summer in fairness.

The talent levels in the squad is eroding every year and it will only get worse. This year it was Martinez who fell off the cliff in terms of level. Watkins to an extent too. That’s what happens when you can’t refresh the squad.

Guessand, Elliott, Sancho, Lindelof. Most of the previous windows don’t look much less ugly.

Buendia and Bailey are two that should not be starting games on current form. Barkley, and anyone else instead of Bailey would be a start.

There has to be a very obvious issue here.

    Money.

I feel next season should be more a back to basics and refresh time - start introducing more youngsters, trust our acedemy, develop youth - while trying to move on some that have reached the time - so sorry but likes of Mings, Digne, Buendia, Barkley, Bailey - and depending replacements available Martinez and Ollie (I'd actually still like Ollie as squad player).

I can't understand why we're letting the likes of Barranchea - a 24 y/o Argentine defensive mid slip away for £15 million while getting in Dougie as cover, we get youngsters like Jimoh-Aloba, Swinkels, Zep Redmond, Kadan Young but loan them out quickly, while bringing back Bailey or in Elliot and Sancho, rather than bring them through, give them minutes, even if it is just for PSR in the future. With exception of Bogarde and Ramsey, I can't remember the last 'up from academy' we've produced - when for a while it was almost our signature to find at least 1 star player in the squad from there - Gabby, Vassell, Davis, Cahill, Grealish.

We need to freshen up, the team next year and add depth - cheapest way, if we're patient is to start trusting the youngsters more, with only a few key signings to replace previous key players that move one

And at least United lost, added with Pool yesterday, means that damage is somehow limited - and also shows that everyone is fragile, although we have our clear excuse as to why and hope for some returnees

Guessand cost 30 million. Malen cost 24 million. Abraham cost 21 million. I understand that this isn’t Mbappe money and that the players have resale value, but it’s still a never ending trend of Emery signing players he subsequently does not want to start.

Surely that 75 million could have gone on some players that might actually start games in the team. If Emery is there next summer, what will happen again is that everything will be focused on right now, more experienced loan players will be signed, and you’ll have more or less the same core group of players there, albeit a year older.

And Villa’s conversation about living on pennies only stretches so far when you consider that Villa have the 11th highest wage bill in the world, almost as high as Tottenham.

Emery is a world class coach but this project is not sustainable. You can’t keep going in every window, loaning in a few high wage earners , signing a few bad players, never really add any quality for the long term, and think that doesn’t catch up to you.

You’re bang on. But do you really think it’s gonna be the summer strategy? I do not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,362 ✭✭✭pavb2

Tonight’s performance wasn’t unexpected but that first 10 minutes of the second half was the absolute worst I’ve seen in a long time, playing out from defence only to continually lose it on the halfway line.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,955 ✭✭✭Patser

You never know, Monchi is gone, if you want to beat psr best way is to produce some talent, even if just to sell on.

A lot will depend on who goes and how much we get in. If we can move on the likes of Digne, Buendia, Bailey that's a big chunk of wages gone. Malen and Guessand look good to trigger their sales, along with Barranchea - that's £80 odd million coming in. Sancho, Elliott and Barkley gone, more wages off book. Not sure what Luiz deal is but he's shown he's not bad as an option.

Everything I’ve seen has suggested Unai has final say on transfers. I would love to believe that this summer is the one that drives on the next 5 years. Obviously in that scenario I don’t want Emery gone because he is the best coach the club has had in my lifetime.

But I’m expecting more high wage loan deals and more bad talent identification, and can only hope to be wrong about that.

Ollie has fallen off a cliff in terms of his form. He does a lot of work off the ball and when we were winning people gave him somewhat of a pass for this but in a team that does not score too many goals and only plays 1 up front his job is to put the ball in the net and he simply is not doing that enough. Unfortunately I think Tammy like Malen before him was only ever bought as backup to bring on if we need something different / to rest Watkins and Unai doesn't believe anyone good enough to start over Ollie could be bought for under 30m unless we get lucky (Like with Duran).

Don't think a club like Villa can make a definite plan for next season until we know about the potential for CL football next season. For right now however I think most would like to see Tammy given a chance, someone like Barkely coming into AM instead of Beundia (maybe he can have an impact from the bench like at the start of the year instead of being too lightweight from the start) and maybe Alysson get a few more minutes. Other than those changes I fear we don't really have enough different options until the injured lads return and even then I fear we are building McGinn up to be some sort of messiah because of the drive and hunger he shows when really it is the loss of Kamara that is killing us again this year.

For what it’s worth, entire Chelsea team should have been booked at HT for delaying the restart.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 848 ✭✭✭Treble double

Another show of weakness from that Villa team, at the start of both halves Chelsea purposely encroached into Villa's half with their huddle to lay down a marker and the home team stood around like schoolgirls and took it. The team is so lacking in leaders it's frightening.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,157 ✭✭✭✭CSF

What can the Villa players do though, without risking being sent off themselves? No idea how the ref let that happen. Proper weakness.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 848 ✭✭✭Treble double

A few of them may aswell have been sent off for all they did on the pitch. I am repeating myself but when you go through the team it is no surprise they were spanked, it is a team so short in quality it is unbelievable they are still fourth in the table. The goalie, the two centre halves the two holding midfielders, the four attacking players, awful. Cash tried manually but was left stranded by that wet wipe Bailey. Maatsen was caught a few times and again no help from Rogers, but at least he has pace and some bit of an attacking threat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,157 ✭✭✭✭CSF

There is very little depth to the squad (which is insane with the 11th highest wage bill in the world). Things will get better if Tielemans and McGinn recover and other players don’t get injured, but injuries happen, and even moreso during big fixture pileups.

There's two options when you have something like that huddle; one is react so like Dublin/Mayo in the "Battle of Hill 16" and push them out of the way by proxy of occupying the same space as them but not so overtly as to just grab them or anything.

The second option is to ignore or even just laugh. The problem with this option is you HAVE to win, because then after you can say "we don't need silly antics to win football games" or "we're happy to let them do that if they feel they need to do it to have a chance against us".

For me, the best option is just to ignore before, during and after, don't mention it, don't give them the satisfaction, just pretend it didn't happen and get on with. Remember, Mayo won that game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,157 ✭✭✭✭CSF

Absolutely, but there is a rule in place in relation to delaying the restart, so ref needed to have some balls and follow them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 462 ✭✭cgorzy

Yeah that huddle was just stupid management nonsense, best ignored and concentrate on passing and playing ball. We scored after a few minutes of it first half, I don’t think it was remembering it that caused us to let in 2 later in the half.

Spurs a prime example of what Villa need to avoid becoming in terms of talent drain. Only 2 years since Villa barely pipped them to 4th.
