LOL very funny to see how chainsaw physics have evolved since Resi 4 the first time you encounter one here

I beat this the other day, the first half of the game where you're in the care center is really good, but I found Leon's stuff just kind of a slog. It's full of these little game design 'tributes' to stuff like RE4 and 2, but always less substantial or well executed as the originals in each case. Like, there's a bit with an elevator, not a spoiler but similar to a sequence in 4, but not as good, and so it goes on like that. Basically, think of the second half of MGS4, but for Resident Evil. Or think of FFVII Advent Children

Pretty disappointing cause the very first room in the hospital where you fight those chainsaw things makes it seem like the whole game will have that level of Dead Rising chaos, but it's literally just that one room.

All the Grace stuff is really good though

by dump do you mean just chuck on the floor? Would drive me mad in RE to throw that many magnum rounds away, you could wipe out an entire room of zombies with that and have some to spare (cause they're piercing rounds) :O

I always leg it back to the storage box

Yup. Just discarded them. Didn't realise they were for the Requiem, presumed they were for a rifle or something I hadn't picked up yet, and since by those points I'd had to sneak around a good few enemies who were still bumbling around I didn't fancy trying to make the trek back to the storage box, then back up past them again.

Couldn't even load the bullets into the Requiem because I'd left it behind in the Storage box as it seemed like such a powerful gun (which at that stage, only had one bullet in it) that I assumed it was too circumstantial to have with me the whole time and to just save it for boss fights.

    I am not smart.

I decided to boot up resi 7 when this was installing to figure out why I hadn't deleted it only to find I had all the dlc to do. Finished that up so hoping to get stuck in this week.

Have finished what I assume is the first half of the game. Not going to lie, I played most of Grace's sections in third-person. I stuck with first person for a while but after trying third-person for a few minutes, I just far preferred it. Nice to have the option either way anyway.

Could have done with more Leon in the first half, but I'm guessing the second half will be weighted more in his favour so it's fine.

Enjoyed the first half as a whole regardless. I kind of doubt I'll be replaying the game though. I played through RE2 & RE3 remakes a bunch of times, I'm just not quite sure if this game has that same pull for repeated playthroughs for me.

Agree, I used it as a nice palate cleanser between writing projects for the weekend, can't see myself going back though.

Except perhaps the dogs through the window?
I was playing it late at night in the basement of an otherwise empty office…

I appreciate that they've doubled down on Resident Evil logic here.

'Scraps + blood = bullets' is the kind of total nonsense I like to see.

    I… uhh… also don't think…. I-I-I-I could play as G-G-G-Grace…. uhh at the start of the g-g-g-game again… whhrhh-hhuhrrh-whhurrhhh…

Jokes aside, the actress is giving a great performance, and I get that Grace is supposed to be terrified having not experienced this before and gradually gets more able and confident, but seriously… you've at the very least undergone some form of FBI training, enough to be sent out into the field with a gun. Get your sh*t together!

Started this last night. But of messing around with the graphics settings but settled on full path tracing because it looks incredible and manages to run better than ray tracing because frame gen actually works unlike in non path tracing where it's like having turbo screen tearing when you move.

Early days for me. I started on hard mode as I liked the idea of ink ribbons. Got to my first typewriter. Ignored it to save on ink ribbons and promptly got my head bitten off 10 minutes later.

    And loved it.

Just finished the first multi-hour Grace section, which I'm guessing is the most substantial part of her half of the game? Unashamed Resi 2 vibes with its looping structure, limited resources and enemies that won't stay dead, and very enjoyable for it.

    Very minor mechanical spoiler.

Kudos to Capcom on how hard this game goes on having enemies just straight-up explode from time to time. Proper showers of blood and viscera. The Chunk in particular properly 'popped' like a balloon.

Haha I was thinking the same. Most unrealistic FBI agent ever

I think it's the fact that she witness what she did and looked like then from the opening she hid behind her desk ever since surrounded in paperwork to avoid field duty before being talked with facing her fear to get back out there. Pretty sadistic sending her back there in fairness 😂

Everyone seems to be enjoying it, I guess I'm going to have to get it then…

Man, chainsaws just add so much chaos to the firefights.

    Finished it yesterday and really enjoyed it. Won't get into story beats but a comment on one of Leon's mid-game sections;

I thought Leon's main mid-game section could have done with a boss fight or two. An incredible amount run to X and get Y item, then go to Z before going back to X (which is expected in an RE game). I was just waiting for a big set piece fight that never really happened during this section of the game!

Finished it today. Enjoyed it, would give it a solid 7/10.

I think I enjoyed the Grace segments more than the Leon ones. The Grace parts feel more like “true” RE to me and it’s a formula the developer can execute really well. The Leon stuff just feels like they’re constantly trying to recapture the lightning in a bottle that was RE4 that even the RE4 remake couldn’t manage, so after a strong start the Leon parts falls a little bit flat for me, once those segments start becoming longer from the midpoint of the game.

Won’t bother getting into the ending (it’s an RE game, the plot is mad) but general spoilery stuff below:

I thought the return to Racoon City mostly underwhelmed. The first impressions are great, desolate landscape and almost no soundtrack, just wind and Umbrella propaganda dotted around the place. The initial atmosphere was great.

Then, as another poster mentioned, the game proceeds to drag the a*se out of this segment to the point where you’re wandering around sewers, underground train tunnels, and non-descript apartment buildings for hours. You might as well be playing The Last of Us.

The RPD was fun but completely silly. Loads of member berries but we reach peak jump the shark point when Mr. X himself shows up. I grinned like a fool but it was still a bit silly in my view.

Parts of the story were a bit derivative but that’s not unexpected I guess. Some of the late game Leon bits in particular was evocative of stuff Kojima was doing with Old Snake twenty years ago in MGS4. Actually, much of the final third of this game is MGS4 reminiscent, just nostalgia and fan service all over the place.

Finished it today and really liked it but the 2nd half of the game dips in quality. I think the game would have been better having Grace most of the time and Leon popping in for mayhem (like the first half)

Overall though would recommend the game

With the rumours of RE-RE-Remake 1, i was thinking how could they make it work but Graces section in the care facility show they could absolutely nail the mansion in the RE engine in both 1st and 3rd person. I love how every zombie encounter feels unique and deadly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,727 ✭✭✭recyclops

Yeah but I think will need to be very sparse with ammo, it's unnecessary as a re re make as the other remake is still in my top 3 resi games.

Finished 9 myself last night and agree with pretty much all the reviews here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 37,415 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Finished it just there. Said my game time was just over 11 hours which is probably right enough, as I did take my time with it. Really enjoyed it overall. First half is definitely the star of the show with Grace. Second half has its moments but is very up and down. I also kind of have the same issue with Leon here that I did with the RE4 remake, which is that considering how much more action-orientated his sections are, he moves so clunkily at times.

Like I said, similar to RE4 remake I don't see myself replaying this like I did with the RE2 & 3 Remakes, but still enjoyed my time a lot with it.

Some people say Grace is too timid, I think she's a goddamn hero for not noping out of the office when she was given the assignment.

That's what happens these days with so many working from home. Juniors get dragged into offices and given tasks they shouldn't be. "Need you to give a presentation for a new client", "Need you to sort out changes to payroll", "Need you to collect some blood and scrap metal to handmake bullets and stop a zombie apocalypse"

    Capitalism....

The thing to remember about Resi is that is b-movie tier trash and always has been. The writing is shite, the internal logic absolute gibberish and the whole thing often incredibly derivative of other media. Every scare is undercut by some laughable bit of nonsense, and no amount of AAA polish and prestige can disguise its deeply silly roots.

And, to be clear, this is why the series is good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,711 ✭✭✭Underground

Very true. The modern games take themselves so seriously when the most famous game in the series in RE4 (original, not the remake) embraced its goofy side and was all the better for it. To be fair, would it be so charming if all the entries were as silly? Probably not.

I still to this day have a bit of a soft spot for Code Veronica despite its insane plot 😅

Was sort of hoping they might remake it in the same way at some stage but it seems unlikely now
