wolves have recently taken 7 points from villa, Liverpool

And arsenal, dunno what’s happened but they are not the worst team in the league anymore

Last night was the reason we can't give Carrick the permanent job.

Because Case is old with Ugarte his only back up?

It has been coming for awhile in fairness.

The players look clueless going forward and unfit.

We are probably a bit more organized at the back.

He just leaves it too late with subs, Mbuemo and Cunha having stinkers and he waits so long to bring on Amad.

The best weapon we had was to get Amad on as soon as possible against a tired team and he left it so late.

Refusing to change the team, leaving it too late with subs and team looking poor going forward.

What I read about the end of his time at Middleborough is becoming evident as time goes on here.

Let's hope he can prove me wrong.

He should be booed the next time he turns up at Old Trafford.

Insulting Martinez and now mocking the manager while he supposedly loves the club.

I don't care what he did as a player, I care that now all he seems intent on doing is damaging the team for some bizarre reason.

The performances in the first 2 games are completely at odds to what we have seen since then.

The drop off in intensity is hard to fathom .

Hopefully we can push on and make a champions league spot .

Unfortunately Mainoo is not proving to be Carricks saviour as some have predicted.

Pretty much my take on it, still don't know if I put more blame on the players or Carrick. Shaw again didn't get forward, he got in a few decent positions in the first half and looked for a backwards pass. Not sure if Carrick has told him not to get caught out or if Shaw has gone into preservation mode for the WC.

Targeting Cunha with long balls in the first half was a bizarre tactic. No intent to play the ball out and Trippier was winning most of the headers anyway. That had to be an instruction from Carrick.

There's very little point bringing Amad on if you're going to be lumping it up to Maguire for the last 15 minutes. I'm still not convinced that starting Sesko is the way to go, at least he offers something of difference when brought on.

We've been blessed to get as many points as we have of late, it has put us in a really good position but it's going to be a real fight / stumble to the finish for CL spots.

Need to sign at least 1 if not 2 full backs in the summer. It's getting to crisis point.

The likes of Casemiro, Maguire, Shaw, Malacia, Zirkzee and Ugarte are all players clearly on the way out. Yet they are still getting game time as there is nobody else.

It's coming back to bite them a bit now that they didn't even get a midfielder on loan in January.

How did his time at Middlesborough end ? What went wrong?

Sesko toughed the ball 3 or 4 times in the 2nd half last night against 10 men. That is damning on the team as a whole.

Newcastle's strength is their midfield. We needed Bruno playing deeper and closer to Casemiro + Mainoo last night in my opinion.

We are talking about champions league next season. In terms of squad depth last night we finished with Dalot, Malacia, Ugarte + Zirkzee on the pitch. We are seriously lacking in squad depth for any sort of European campaign next season. That is before Casemiro + possibly Maguire leave on a free in the summer. Needs to be a busy summer in terms of numbers as well as quality.

With the Everton home defeat this was the most disappointing performance of the season.

    Such a poor performance overall.

Tactically looked all over the place. Mainoo performances recently have been poor. Its a huge worry as he was physically destroyed last night by the Newcastle midfield. Technically I think he been poor lately too. First touch is not on it and his short range passes have been sloppy. He has not imposed himself on the no 8 position as I would like.

The lack of aggression is the real main worry. We seem to press quiet well but trying win the ball back we are extremely stand off ish and opposition getting possession cheaply.

Could go on but only pointing out what's mostly been said here.

    EVENFLOW

We looked much fitter under Amorim and we had high intensity for City and Arsenal.

We look flat pretty much most games since that.

Are we now seeing the change in training methods from Carrick on the field.

If so it is very worrying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,886 ✭✭✭ericzeking

I think we are lethargic and the big gaps in between games doesn't help, you can't get any rhythm going.

I don't agree with lads talking about fitness, you don't just lose fitness as a professional athlete in a matter of weeks, where you are training every day, I think it's match sharpness we are lacking.

Last night was lost in midfield, we couldn't sustain any sort of decent possession to provide a foundation to attack.

I think when we have been lauding Lammens, we should acknowledge he should have done better for the winner, it was the only place it was plausibly going.

Martinez is the biggest loss in setting the tempo of any game he plays.

Yeah that was a shite performance and it followed a similar performance against Palace but we got out of jail. Mainoo was really bad, the subs were slow and to be ran off the pitch by 10 men deserves all the criticism that will come today across the media and grant me patience, the likes of Roy Keane and the rest of the mumbling idiots.

Carrick may very well get the job and if he does he'll be well supported, but its times like last night where tactical tweaks are needed and don't materialise that you just know deep down that he doesn't have the experience for this.

I wouldn't personally want Eddie Howe at United and some United fans do sneer at the idea but yet you see what a difference an experienced manager makes. Newcastle were well in the game with 10 men and deservedly won and a lot of that was down to their manager last night.

Onto the next one, United are still in a great position and can hopefully kick on.

Bruno is back to pressing like a madman and generally having the free role he once had. It's great when it goes well but it causes issues.

I think all of us agree that Amorim was wrong to be playing him in a 2 man midfield, but I could see some logic behind it, that logic being that it kept Bruno disciplined / generally stopped him from pressing solo.

Bruno always puts in a huge shift, but he's a law unto himself when it comes to pressing opponents, and he leaves the team exposed while doing it. Him running past Sesko to press a CB was common last night, that is completely detrimental imo.

Bruno drives me mad at times but complaining about him pressing too much while almost all the rest of the team played like a masters team doesn’t make sense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,079 ✭✭✭Robson99

Good point on Mainoo. Thought he was pushed around the place last night. We need a strong physical presence in the middle of the park to replace Casemiro. The likes of Locatelli could possibly be tempted from Juve, though may lack a yard of pace for the Prem League

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,254 ✭✭✭EltonJohn69

We need Maguire next season, the game has changed and he is now maybe the best player in the leaugue at defending The British Corner.

Also what a miserable grey day, combined with that horrible result….disgusting . Maybe I should buy a large cake and champagne but I don’t think that would help. …… the villa game is now a cup final

Our biggest problem is not having Martinez fit.

His ability to play the ball quick into the middle and find the man means teams have to be compact and leave space out wide.

Without him doing that, we just seem to be shifting ball from right to left with very little overlap, and it’s easily defended.

Not a surprise either that Mainoo has gone off the boil with Martinez, Mainoo is best on the ball facing towards goal and linking it up, but he’s not getting that at the minute.

Add In Martinez’s defensive capabilities, and he’s a massive loss.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,886 ✭✭✭ericzeking

I think if you have Martinez coming across there to that lad who scored the winner, he slides from about 10 yards away and sends your man and the ball into the top tier of the stand!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,577 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

We've different views of the game so, pressing is a team effort and you can't have one guy running around doing his own thing. It needs to be a group effort. We see the individual brilliance from Bruno when in possession at times but this individualism is a weakness when we don't have the ball.

Why the group isn't putting in the effort is another thing altogether. I would say that what we've seen from Carrick tells us that he's a much more conservative manager than Amorim. We're not pressing as much, we're not getting full backs forward as much.

The same players were doing a fairly decent job of pressing under Amorim, from what we've seen so far, Carrick doesn't want them pressing as high up the pitch or as often as Amorim did.

We need a new young CB. We can't be relying on DeLigt and Martinez to stay fit.

aside from changing the formation (which i believe 99% on here would have done also), what has carrick done with the team?

    counter against better teams?

it that it? it certainly cant be but i cant think of a good performance recently

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 16,438 ✭✭✭✭loyatemu

this is the test for him. He's been reluctant to mess with a winning team. Now we've lost after a series of mediocre performances, can he find a way to pick things up. Having Martinez and Mount available would be a big bonus though.

When he goes rogue on the press like a headless chicken by himself they just play around him and then there is any amount of space to get at us. Press needs to be coordinated and at the right time to work effectively.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,784 ✭✭✭BoardsMember

Another way of looking at that is that it doesn't make sense for only one player to press hard, it has to be a team press or nothing. Anything else is easy to play against by better teams.

    He's won games.

    Something Amorim struggled to do.

We've already got two young CBs and one of them cost a lot of money. We need experience at CB not more youth.
