My own very rough estimates for a very regular 90km rural trip on mainly 80kmh roads.

    Cold Winter 16kWh/100km

    Normal Winter 14kWh/100km

    Today 12kWh/100km

Summer 9 to 11kWh/100km. Depending on A/C etc.

    Tesla Model 3 RWD LFP

Ah brill - thanks - I’ll be mapping progress (as I have been) over coming months just to see those KWh per 100kms hopefully reduce in size😀

All a bit of fun but interesting nevertheless

I used to do that too when I first got into EV’s many years ago.
Recorded mileage, kWh used monthly and compared against other EV’s on the fleet. Eventually stopped though.

I don't bother much anymore either. But I probably have a good idea what the figure will be even without looking, as I am sure you do.

From Friday when I change from Model 3 to Y I will probably take an interest in consumption for a while until I get a handle on the reality. But I expect about 5% less efficiency than now, just going by WLTP etc. Will still be loads for all my journeys.

    What do you reckon?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 18,873 Mod ✭✭✭✭slave1

I reckon 10% less efficient roughly

Recommend Tesla mate if you want to nerd out on data

I went from M3P to MY AWD and consumption was better on the MY in general. It done 15.2 kWh/100km on long national road trips (Dub-Don).

it needed about 60% to do a 250km trip to Wexford and back at motorway speeds running AP at 125km/h.

Those figures are impressive compared to my Smart#1 pro+
While I don’t yet know my summer range, my winter average was more like 18.5 than 16 - you’re a good 3kwh better all round regardless of weather/temp. Would those figures be classed as industry leading I wonder?
Saying that I don’t have figures for that exact scenario (80km roads commute) - my winter figures are essentially combined driving which would be naturally less efficient

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,885 ✭✭✭eagerv

Yea possibly. WLTP range of my M3 is similar to new MY with a slightly smaller battery in M3. Will see soon enough.

Those figures I quoted are very much for a regular trip home to home, easy for comparison with different weather conditions. Faster roads will be higher of course.

My M3H is 14.2 lifetime, so versus that 15.2 it's 7%, we'd be better off seeing what someone who has a Juniper last year has done over a year for better comparison

Just did a quick google - no wonder Tesla figures above look impressive - they are. Rated as one of the top most efficient cars out there

    Top Energy-Efficient EVs (2025-2026)

    • Hyundai Ioniq 6 SE Long Range RWD: Recognized for superior efficiency (approx. 140 MPGe / 24 kWh/100 miles).
    • Tesla Model 3 (Long Range RWD/Base): Consistently top-tier for efficiency (up to 5.0 mi/kWh).
    • Lucid Air Pure RWD (19-inch wheels): Uses 23 kWh/100 miles, making it one of the most efficient luxury options.
    • Fiat 500e: Offers excellent efficiency (4.8 mi/kWh) for urban driving.
    • Kia EV3: A new, highly efficient compact SUV (4.41 miles/kWh).
    • Renault 5 / Dacia Spring: Top-rated in Europe for efficiency (approx. 4.3–4.7 mi/kWh).
    • Hyundai Kona Electric: Offers strong 4.2 mi/kWh efficiency.

BMW iX / Skoda Elroq: Larger vehicles that have significantly improved their efficiency for 2025-2026.

Oh, and the wheels are very important, the 19" way more efficient than the 20", I asked Tesla could they supply a Y on 18" like in other markets and the answer was a straight no, not an option which is a damn shame, more comfy ride and increased range

I happened to look at my Niro's long-term consumption just yesterday - over the last 90 hours of driving, it has averaged 3.8miles per kWh, which converts to 16.35 kWh/100km. The vast majority of that has been motorway cruising around 105-110kmh and driven over the winter - I've covered more than 8000 miles/13000km since early November. Your car is 9cm taller and fractionally wider, so aerodynamics probably plays a role.

Yeah I reckon it plays a big role - I couldn’t achieve those figures unless I drove like Miss Daisy sorta thing.

    I had a 252 iX2 for the last 2 days. The e20 version.
Nice “car” but nothing to write home about out. 20.3kwh/100km was the average and it’s no way powerful. So quite inefficient compared to some of the rivals.

Minister of Transport Darragh O'Brien TD has announced the launch of a public consultation on the draft National EV Charging Infrastructure Strategy 2026-2028, setting out the next phase of Ireland’s plan to expand and future proof the national EV charging network.

🔌The draft Strategy delivers on the Programme for Government commitment to develop a new National EV Charging Infrastructure Strategy and ensure that charging infrastructure continues to stay ahead of growing demand as more drivers make the switch to #EVs.

📆 The closing date for submissions is 5pm on 24 April 2026.

Clearly no TDs drive electric vehicles regularly.

Do Tesla SuCs in NI (specifically Sprucefield) work normally with the Tesla app that has an ROI credit card for the account? No issues with €50 contactless limit etc, no need to do anything other than start the charger in the app?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,205 ✭✭✭✭mfceiling

Wife has charged at Sprucefield before with no issues whatsoever. Just start the charger in the app and away you go.

BBC2 now are showing a program of what happens when pedestrians are killed by driverless cars and who's to blame.

Going to have to figure out a submission on the charging one on providing higher subsidy to doomed sites.

As in - the entire n4 between Mullingar and Newtownforbes is being replaced, so why would a CCO invest? But all it has now is a very oversubscribed site at Ballinalack.

Ditto Carrick on Shannon being bypassed and having very limited capacity.

New sites would not be commercially viable due to the cut off on viability, but the Mullingar road won't be done for at least 8 years.

And I don't think the state will be focusing on National Primaries at this stage of the rollout!

You don't need any credit on any SuC chargepoint. Your Tesla account works uniformly across Europe, EU countries and non-EU countries alike.

Sprucefield obviously open to non-Teslas so it can get busy at certain times, but I've found it an excellent resource.

Worth adding a FX friendly card also to the app also (like Revolut/N26/Curve) to handle the £GBP payment also to get the best exchange rate and avoid currency conversion charges.

You can have multiple cards so its super easy to swap between different cards when needed.

Interested in your comment in particular as I do frequent enough trips - Sligo- Dublin. It's wonderful to see all the extra new EVs on the road but this is going to eat into existing charging infrastructure capacity. For example my goto charging stop both ways is Kinnegad. This stop can be very busy given the confluence of Sligo/Galway traffic going to and from Dublin. IMO this should be upgraded from an 8 bay charging site to a 12 bay site ASAP. The other stops mentioned Ballinalack and Carrick on Shannon should be upgraded to 4 bay sites now. This may need to be additional grant aided to make it happen- new routes/roads will undoubtedly happen but could take quite a number of years before they become reality. The other thing I would say is that all the other 8 bay sites should be expanded to 12 Bay sites given the continuing additional numbers of EVs on the road.

I'd also suggest that the Circle K on Mullingar Bypass should get chargers in both directions; and it isn't actually going to be bypassed.

10c on a litre of petrol/diesel since last week alone- who knows where it may head to over coming weeks- can only be good for the secondhand and new EV market
