Qatar says it has arrested 10 saboteurs linked to the IGRC (CNN reports).

Kurds are Sunni, and only 5-10% of Iran is Sunni. 90% are Shia. 75% of Iranians support a secular government. Like what's the plan now? Sunni Kurds lead a revolution and rule a population of Shia Muslims who want a secular government?

Kurds are 10% of the population, while Azeris are about 25%. Theres also 1 million Arabs in Khuzestan region I think. There are Baloch people on the Pakistani border. Iran and Pakistan have cooperated against Baloch militants.

OK, a couple of things to unpack here.

Firstly, the use of the Shannon stopover is in accordance with the long-standing Irish interpretation of the obligations of neutral powers dating back to The Emergency. The Irish government always distinguished between combat operations and administrative moves of the various combatants which came into its jurisdiction (normally air crash or shipwreck). The former were returned to their side of origin, the latter interned. The interpretation ultimately may be wrong or right, but at least Ireland has been consistent for the last 80 years, and an argument it's wrong is going against the weight of precedent.

Complicating the issue is that the treaties on the obligations of neutral powers pre-date air transport and can only be used as a guide, but Art 7 of Hague XIII (The Rights and Duties of Neutral Powers in Naval War) states "A neutral Power is not bound to prevent the export or transit, for the use of either belligerent, of arms, ammunition, or, in general, of anything which could be of use to an army or fleet." Switzerland actually does prevent such (much to the dismay of the Swiss arms industry of late), but that's a domestic policy, not a legal requirement of a neutral power and why the position was not well received by other European countries trying to arm Ukraine. It wasn't "You're neutral and we respect the choice not to allow arms to Ukraine", it was "OK, you're neutral, but that doesn't mean you have to prohibit it, why are you being dicks about this?"

With regards to Oman and its support to US Navy vessels prior to hostilities, it's worth looking at Article 13 which specifically covers what happens when a belligerent vessel is in port when the fighting starts: They are to be instructed to leave within 24 hours, but the fact that they were present in the country taking advantage of the port does not strip the country of its neutral status or protections.

So here's the thing about neutrality: There is no "register of neutral countries." A nation can have a declared default position of neutrality, but neutrality itself is always taken on a case by case basis with respect to any particular conflict once that conflict starts. Simple historical example: During WW2, Japan and Germany were at war with the US and the UK. The US, UK and USSR were at war with Germany. However, the USSR had a policy of neutrality towards the Japan/US fight, and Japan had a policy of neutrality towards the USSR/Germany fight. As a result, US combat equipment being sent to the USSR by lend-lease was permitted by Japan to sail right through the Pacific war zone to be used against Germany. If Oman declares "You two have just started fighting, leave us out of it", then that's legitimate neutrality.

The important part of neutrality is even-handedness, Article 9: "A neutral Power must apply impartially to the two belligerents the conditions, restrictions, or prohibitions made by it in regard to the admission into its ports, roadsteads, or territorial waters, of belligerent war-ships or of their prizes." As long as Oman makes available the exact same facilities under the exact same conditions to the Iranians as they have to the Americans, they are still considered a neutral power. The Iranians may choose not to ask the use of the facilities of Oman, but as long as they are treated equally, it's legit. Or at least would have been before Iran started attacking it, in which case there's an argument for it being justified.

As another example of the relative archaicness of the laws, a belligerent ship may use the port of a neutral power to refuel, either to the limits of its bunkers, or with enough to get back to its home nation (Art 19). In practice today, this means that the ship can be refuelled for the duration of a local war. It may not, however, use the neutral port for this twice within three months. However, there is no indication that Oman has not adhered to the requirements of the Convention. Which it never actually signed. Actually, Ireland's not a signatory either, but anyway…

Analysis: Why missile maths could favour Iran

Sky's science and technology editor Tom Clarke has been looking at the "financial and logistical asymmetry of combatting Iran's drones" and how it could prove risky for other countries in the region.

Trump seemed very perplexed why Iran are hitting Gulf states last night. A number of embassies have been hit in the region as well as a number of hotels in the region where members of US forces were moved from their bases. Plenty of video's of them having a great time drinking beers on their balconies and in hotel bars.

The CIA base hit in Saudi according to WAPO

Now it seems the 3 US jets were shot down by 1 Kuwaiti jet not air defence. IRGC announced they shot sown another last night, but no footage yet. They are even messing up the propaganda campaign especially on US losses up to now.

I wonder if that Kuwait pilot didn't have some family in Iran. Or that Bahrain security didn't pick 10 anti government dissidents and claimed they are Iranian saboteurs… Bahrain is autocracy propped by Saudis and do not have real domestic support. Strange things can happen when there is uncertainty. Settling scores and whatnot. Mossad could also be behind some of things happening there. We will never know we can only watch and pay for most of it afterwards. Prices are already raising and whole thing only started. Prices will keep rising even if it will stop this week as disruption is real already.

Kuwait’s health ministry says an 11-year-old girl was killed after being hit by falling shrapnel following waves of Iranian attacks across the Gulf.

At least 1,097 civilians have been killed in U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran since Feb. 28, including 181 children under 10, according to monitor HRANA.

    Meanwhile…

Maduro was captured. Venezuelan oil reached Israel. Israel and the U.S. bombed Iran. Iran just restricted the Strait of Hormuz.
If Iran closes Hormuz, Israel‘s Gulf oil supply is cut. So where does the backup come from? VENEZUELA.
    This was never about liberation.

The Kurds do not seem convinced by this war and have been left high and dry by the US before. However, if Turkiye got its thinking cap on, helping the Kurds in Iran might alleviate the tensions with their own Kurdish population.

It’s horrific that children are the collateral damage of adult insanity. Bless their souls. May they all rest peacefully. Their family and friends have my most sincere condolences. I can’t begin to image the depth of their pain and loss.

Highly likely the third THAAD battery radar has been put out of action in Saudi Arabia to go along with the UAE and Jordanian ones. Probably see more getting launched now until they totally run out of interceptors in the Gulf region and then turn attention to somewhere else like air bases and a country further north.

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

I think that’s one potential scenario - and who knows what hold Israel have over this administration at this point. We’ve seen how the “Jewish” vote is so important in American elections too so that aspect can’t be discounted either even though the interim elections are a while away yet.

Personally I think these actions are simply “the gospel according to Trump”- he’s a fcking idiot - both in his personal business and political life - whilst he duped much of America into voting for him, he doesn’t have the skills to navigate world politics , international trade and political relationships.

He’s gone back to what he knows and used to - go big , rip people off, go broke, use the law to your advantage so you come out smiling, rinse and repeat.
Relationships mean nothing, the law means nothing- as a result, maybe trying to analyse this is fruitless- he’s a rogue president it’s that simple- but will America wake up?

And also, given that they need China to replenish their arsenal using precious minerals etc, it’s going to be one fcking interesting conversation in a few weeks time when Trump meets Xi Jinpingpong with his begging bowl looking for extra helpings of gallium, germanium, and samarium

“Plenty of video's of them having a great time drinking beers on their balconies and in hotel bars.”

I have a relation in the UAE at present- yes and no- yes, many people are trying to get on with life as normal - but many people are also staying at home, not going to workplaces etc (and obviously heeding local government advice when given)- but especially people with young families over there, they’re the ones who appear to be extra cautious and somewhat scared - but yes, you will see video of “some” people out enjoying themselves

Its a bit hypocritical. America treats every port and airport in Iran as a military target because they want to destroy Irans ability to fight back.

To America, all Airports are legitimate targets and have been bombed extensively.

They're not combing through emergency acts laws from 80 years ago, and even if they did, its irrelevant Shannon often has whole sections of the terminal devoted entirely to US military activity. Literally millions of US Soldiers have transited through Shannon in full uniform. Flights routinely carry weapons through Shannon, the CIA used Shannon to carry kidnapped people to secret torture sites.

I live 20 kilometers from Shannon, I do not want it to be a legitimate target, but our government gave made it so, and a lot of locals around here are happy to take the risk for the income it provides to the airport

Israel and US still haven't admitted it. They are "looking into it" which means they will say something quite vague about it in a few weeks time when the headlines are already busy with something else. It's the Gaza tactic - deny, defer, deflect.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

    Speaking of hypocrisy

The Left - but but Irish neutrality

Also The Left - hell with neutrality, dozen neutral countries and their civilian populations deserve to be attacked by Aytollah FC whom I fully support just because I hate Genocide FC more

Israel wants to destabilise every country in the region, including Turkey, so that it can steal land and resources and bomb them every week. Just like a tyrant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 924 ✭✭✭bored65

Now we justifying attack on neutral countries and their civilians because of a conspiracy theory?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭batman75

I don't see Turkey doing anything to de stabilise Iran. Nacho Libre mentions that US is winning the war. Not seeing any evidence of that. I'd argue at this time the contrary. Though that could change.

Europe is very much part of the western imperialism that has been raging since the USSR disintegrated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 924 ✭✭✭bored65

Is that why the imperial successor to USSR (and good ally to Iran) with an emperor of 26 years on the throne been waging a colonial war of conquest against a European country since 2014 grabbing 20% of the land to make the largest country in world larger with new colonies full of rare minerals and good soil?

Israel doesn’t want Iranian nationalism. Israel wants a Balkanised Iran engulfed in civil war for the next decade. If they could draw in neighbouring states all the better.

Turkey is becoming the new enemy of Israel, it's not going to take any action that might assist Israel

The fact the Israelis can fly at will over the skies of Iran would indicate the Iranians aren't winning. Also hundreds of key Iranian military installations have been destroyed. Their military leadership has been wiped out. It should be clear i am not a fanboy for the this illegal war,but i like to try and be objective about what is actually taking place. However Iran don't have to win the conventional military battle, they merely have to survive- i think they will. Then the advocates for the war will go back to saying this was about the nuclear threat and degrading Iran 's missile program rather than regime change and freeing the people. The same hypocrites who profess to care about Iranian civilians while desperate to deflect and deny the massacre of school children by the US and Israel.
