With Merz sitting next to him in White house presser, Trump had a direct go off Spain and UK.

Re Spain airbases and not being allowed use them he said:

"Spain have been terrible, they won't let us use their bases, we will use them anyway, no one is going to tell us what we can do"

"I'm not happy with the UK either"

"this is not Winston Churchill we're dealing with"

Well, that was relatively painless. The worst of it was finding the right driveway entrance. (I haven't been to this polling site before). Whoever put out all the campaign literature put it in the wrong place (probably before the official "vote here" signs went up).

    20260303_104301.jpg

Myself and another chap did a tour of a parking lot before returning to the road and going to the correct lot which did have the correct signage.

    20260303_105235.jpg

Phones may not be used in a Texas polling site, so no photos of the interior. School is in session, the voting occurred in the entrance lobby. But as school is in session, the door was locked and had to be opened by a poll worker. Incidentally, firearms are prohibited at all polling sites, school or otherwise. Probably not a bad thing to have school in session, they get to see the election system in operation.

Two workers at the ballot table, one was free and took me immediately. Handed over my LTC, worker scanned it. She took the time to scrutinize the ID itself and then check the photograph. Turned a touchscreen to me where I could select in which primary I wished to vote. After selecting and digitally signing, I was given a choice of random ballot papers to use. They basically are blank sheets with a number, and could be used for either primary.

That sheet was then fed into the worker's machine and printed with basic information and a barcode which the voting machine would use to know which primary I was voting in and which districts I was to be presented candidates for.

One machine was open. Feed the ballot sheet into the machine, start pushing buttons. When satisfied, print selections on the ballot. Take that sheet to a reader where the votes are counted. I forgot to check what number voter i was at that station.

Poll worker asked to speak with me outside afterwards, minor issue. We walked outside, he wanted to know where I got that ugly shirt (I was wearing an 11th Cavalry polo top). Turned out he was a Blackhorse trooper in Germany (11th Cav/Blackhorse is a very esprit de corps unit).

I saw nobody who didn't seem to be either working the polls or voting.

Apparently Barack Husein Obama flew two 757s loaded full of green cash to Iran and gave them the right to make Nuclear weapons.…they collected the cash in Maryland and Virginia...

I have to say this is news to me!

And what about that Island the UK very stupidly gave away...

I'd say Merz is desperately hoping for this clusterfuck to end.....

I think this war is not only a distraction from the Epstein files but may indeed give Congress a reason to allow Trump emergency powers so he can defer /postpone ( do away with ) November midterms .

Good that Ayatollah is gone but that in itself is just performative without boots on the ground and the rest of the regime are there ready to take over..

It's a powder keg that has been lit , by Trump and Netanyahu , on purpose , but for no clear reason of immediate danger , so it's not conspiratorial thinking to say who benefits from this apart from Israel and the Saudis ?

    Trump as deflection from Epstein.

The others attacking a foe with the excuse of regime change ..

Oil prices going sky high .

Traders and billionaires making profits speculating , as Lutnick and his family have with the tariff returns buy out .

Some countries may turn to Russia for cheaper fuel , gas . Kompromat ? Russia pushed ahead against Ukraine with the spotlight off them while this is going on .

And meanwhile ordinary civilians and military get killed , their homes destroyed , other countries get hit with inflation and high energy and production costs , citizens in those countries cannot afford to pay their bills and poverty and recession is at our doors .

This chaos benefits very few but it does benefit those few well .

Haven't seen such tension between the US and UK since Hugh Grant had to stand up to Billy bob Thornton

I cannot believe that Merz allowed other European countries to be trampled. This will destroy European cohesion and will make Germany look obsequious towards the US

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,663 ✭✭✭amacca

Trump even belittled Merz too....with the quip about what they might charge Germany in tariffs......and I suppose the whole press conference....tbh I'm surprised more leaders don't try and call in sick and be obsequious in a way they can control the narrative .... talk about jeopardy sitting by that loose cannon in front of cameras...Martin might be wise to shove the bowl of shamrock up his hole and sit that one out if it happens....maybe he will be accounting for himself to Ivanka...

And the staged sycophants with the prepped off the cuff pieces about the tariff decision showing he can have any tariffs he likes etc......

couldn’t agree more. I cannot see this ending well. I imagine these narcissists are thinking about their carefully curated legacy. This will be up there as epic diplomatic fails of the future. They will not be on the right side of history

and Trump ain’t no Roosevelt or Eisenhower

Maybe it’s Time for European ‘allies’ to stop visiting the White House… pending someone teaching him manners - courtesy- diplomacy

I don't think anyone would be surprised to hear that Trump doesn't care about consent...

It's time he was taken down before he destroys the planet.

    Cmon America, do your thing.

Should help to sort out the planning permission problems.

why do people just let him away with these insults? I wish that Starmer would come out and make scathing remarks about Trump. Leaders are so docile in their approach to Trump. They limply nod and bend over. Where is there sense of honour and self-defence. Sure, there will be economic sanctions. But I cannot imagine that the US has that level of a stranglehold over the UK. Starmer could have set himself up as the re-integration into the European economic market/anti-US type leader

White middleclass man faces no obstacles to voting in a shocking revelation. More at 11!

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 17,701 Mod ✭✭✭✭Manic Moran

The black man in front of me didn't face any obstacles that I noticed either. Nor the multiple hispanic-looking folks at the other stations.

Bexar county is a Democrat-controlled county with, I'm happy to say, competent elections officials. 60% of this county is hispanic, 25% are non-hispanic white, 7-8% black. They may choose whichever polling site they wish, including the one I chose. The process is the same.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 975 ✭✭✭BettyS

Trump has said that he is cutting all trade with Spain in retaliation for their refusal to let the US use the bases. And Merz sat there. Does he endorse this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,542 ✭✭✭✭everlast75

I doubt very much the experience will be the same for those minorities who are in a MAGA-controlled county

How the fùck is this not the biggest story on every news channel around the world?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,688 ✭✭✭yagan

    Of course not.

Everyone knows Trump's an insane pedophile rapist who will probably die soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,026 ✭✭✭cmac2009

Yeah, I'm sure that would go down well and there would be no repercussions for Starmer/UK if he did take that approach. Christ! Have you been hibernating since he came to power or something.

He has so much going on and he has some sort of Ayatollah's curse on his neck !

It might be a new head that will start telling him what to do , like the one Richard E Grant had in the film How to get Ahead in Advertising 😊

So why did Trump hit the regime in Iran. Was it

    (a) on behalf of the tens of thousands of supporters killed there

    (b) Iran's material support for proxies like Hamas who carried out Oct 7th

    (c) Iran working towards getting nuclear weapons

or (d) Iran arming Russia against Ukraine

Didn't think Trump gave a sxxx about Ukraine whatever about the other reasons .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 975 ✭✭✭BettyS

History will frown upon them. I look at how Carney took a successful stance against Trump. The way to deal with bullies is not always to just bend forward and take it. And what does Starmer really have to lose? In all cases, he will be ousted at the next election.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 17,701 Mod ✭✭✭✭Manic Moran

On the basis that Republicans are trying to suppress the Democrat vote whilst making it easier for Republicans to vote, that means that any suppression attempts are going to be focused on the factors which affect Democrat strongholds (the cities), whilst trying to reduce the barriers to voting in rural areas where they are going to get more votes as a percentage. As a result, minorities in those counties are going to be coincidental beneficiaries.

people do not think of the consequences of staying silent. Silence also has repercussions. The cohesion of the EU is at stake. How are the relations between Spain and Germany going to be anything other than frosty?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,688 ✭✭✭yagan

Ok BettyS, the voters of the usa elected a convicted sex offender.

A motivated voting majority knew that, so for any sane person the usa is in their rear view mirror now. It was fun at times, but it's over.

Trump's first was considered an aberation to be sat out, but three times roughly a third of US registered adults for chaos.

Any visits to the white house now is damage control.

Anyway Sanchez in Spain will even more popular now, and Vox more marginalized for using the Trump bingo card.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,595 ✭✭✭Economics101

Just ignore this nonsense about Spain: Trump's attantion will soon pivot to something else. I'd love to see the reaction if Sanchez gave 2 week's notice of closure of U.S bases in Spain. It would be TACOs all round for dinner.

the US people were being crushed economically and believed that the “liberal elites” were ignoring them. Trump gave the downtrodden simple messages of MAGA. He showed resilience after he was shot. They lapped up his McDonalds promo. They could naively imagine him as one of them; the only difference was he was rich. He is a poor man’s idea of a rich man. Trump, I believe was a vote of despair, rather than a vote of malice by the American people. He was bad in the first-term. But none of the neutrals could have imagined how bad he was going to be. Desperate times call for desperate measures. It is usually economic oppression that drives people towards fascists. The working poor is an expanding demographic in the US and they see no escape.
