I have a small shower/toilet in dormer room in converted attic. It’s a very small bathroom with low ceiling. A large patch, about a foot square, of paint has fallen off ceiling within shower cubicle revealing plaster underneath. The plaster doesn’t feel damp.

Any idea of the best approach to fix this myself?

Is the ceiling insulated at all, was it anti-mould paint?

I think you can just start peeling it all away and redoing it, or else just paint over with a similar paint and live with it.

Gloss paints need a primer on base plaster, Sometimes you are better off using an emulsion paint, which absorbs and disperses the water so it doesnt build up and get mouldy

Does one not have to use a bathroom paint because of moisture.

any window to open or extractor fan to use.

Sounds like steam’s probably lifted the paint tbh, especially in a small attic shower. I’d scrape back loose bits, let it fully dry, use a stain block/primer, then repaint with proper bathroom paint. Ventilation helps loads.

If you look at mould buildup, where there visible beading, its the beads that start to grow first. This encourages more moisture buildup and more mould…etc..etc..

'Breathable paint' is a bit like snake oil, but the idea works.

Rub your hand over the patch and check your hand for a coating of dust. If there is than the ceiling has not been primed properly. Your primer is the most important coat.
