Just heard that Joanne Cantwell pulled up Peter Canavan for being opposed to Allianz (which is fair enough) but happy enough to appear on a programme sponsored by them and take money for it.

if the people so opposed to Allianz sponsorship really cared they'd forgo any connection to them at all and take the financial consequences, but that of course would mean having true principles .

No. People are part of the GAA, they advocate that the GAA should not take Allianz sponsorship, but if their view does not prevail they still take part in GAA activities. Someone might be opposed to the 2 point rule, the AI finals in July, but they should not be characterised as unprincipled because they still take part.

He's doing a job as a broadcaster for RTE on a programme sponsored by allianz , he's not partaking in GAA. I agree with your point on the players and participating in the organisation but Canavan isn't doing that when he works for RTE.

All the Allianz stuff is performative tangential stuff. Fair play to Jarlath burns (Especially being from Cross) for not pandering to the student union lefty - nor the republicans looking for a proxy Cold War troubles.

Ultimately Burns has to think of the association - CLG. I really admire Jarlath Burns common sense stance. While many in the GAA are merely looking for a bandwagon like Canavan. Trying to force a “cause” for the sake of it. Burns is one of the few sensible adults in the room. Looking at the big picture. The future etc.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Bit of an upset with Laois thumping Westmeath tonight. Thought Laois were well worth their win even if the ref was favouring Westmeath (imo).

He doesn't need to take the money from a program sponsored by Allianz though does he.

He's actually helping the company he's railing against by appearing on a programme sponsored by them.

This is not participating in society, this is keeping a nice little earner for himself while at the same time apparently appalled at the company who sponsors the programme.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 148 ✭✭Arseboxing

I'm not sure how he's helping Allianz by saying that the GAA should get rid of them as a sponsor because they're funding a genocide? How is he helping Allianz by highlighting, on the national broadcaster, in a calm reasoned, well argued way, the moral disgrace of this sponsorship, a clip which will be seen widely in society and influence opinion?

Presumably you believe anybody who works for BBC NI's GAA coverage is therefore a supporter of British rule in part of Ireland?

It's very obvious what your game here is. You can't defend the GAA having a title sponsor for its second biggest competition which funds genocide - because it is indefensible - so you attempt to go down the Louise Mensch style rabbit hole as demonstrated below to try and muddy the waters and to desperately try and discredit people who rightly object.

    Corporate crisis management 101.

9 county boards have called on the GAA to cut ties, 23 have not. The people I see on social media calling this out the most are also those who will oppose more government funding to make up the shortfall if the GAA cuts ties. Also I doubt many of the loudest protesters have ever set up at a GAA match.

The reason Allianz have the sponsorship is because they bought out Church and General who were the sponsors 30 years ago, it's a continuance of that old sponsorship. Allianz Ireland has got nothing to do with their world wide operations.

Dublin official car provider is Peugeot the same company who's vehicles the Israeli's army officers drive. Why are they so silent about this, shouldn't they pull the plug on this sponsorship immediately?

Loads of other companies are involved in this war but for some reason only Allianz is casing an issue.Hyundai ,Toyota and Ford for example also are involved in this war they supply equipment yet there has been no suggestion that a local Hyundai ,Toyota or Ford dealership's shouldn't be involved in GAA sponsorship even though some are. Toyota for example are the GAA's official car partner.

Amazon are involved in the war yet how many who are apparently outraged at Allianz will cancel their amazon accounts?

Alot of the people wanting the GAA to end it's sponsorship by Allianz are basically expecting the GAA to be perfect while they can go about and use services provided by companies who are involved in this war aswell.

I'm fine with them protesting about it, I'm fine with them wanting the GAA to end it's partnership however I'm not fine with them wanting the GAA to make a sacrifice while they don't do likewise. The Canavan example today is a prime example of this, he should announce he is not going to appear on any Allianz league matches from now on or else that if he does he won't be taking a fee or expenses.

More spin, bluster, desperate whataboutery and obfuscation.

It actually reads like somebody who is being paid by Allianz to spout any oul' nonsense they can to avoid dealing with the issue.

Allianz were named by the UN as being complicit in genocide. They are a title sponsor of the GAA's second biggest competition. This is the issue. The GAA are associating themselves with genocide. For money. Understandably this is an untenable situation for GAA people with a conscience, which I would hope is most GAA people. The GAA was founded as an explicitly political and anti-colonial organisation.

The genocide whitewashing corporate bootlickers are on the wrong side of history here and you know it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,750 ✭✭✭Jack Daw

So are so many other companies complicit in this genocide but they've been ignored, is the UN the be all and end all and the only authority on it that only the companies they name are wrong and numerous others associated with it that the don't bother to name are OK? If that's the case then you're giving the UN far too much credit, they're a complete joke of organisation.

Toyota is the official car partner of the GAA, that is a pretty big deal aswell, why no uproar about them?

Most people aren't corporate boot-lickers they are just pointing out the hypocrisies of those protesting. I'm fine with the GAA dropping Allianz as a sponsor if that is what they want to do, however I genuinely believe that if you are going to demand the GAA drop a sponsor over this war (which is fine) then you yourself will have to make similar sacrifices and stop using other companies involved in the war.You can't go around demanding sacrifices of others that you are unwilling to do yourself.

I was shocked at how poor Kildare were yesterday. That points difference boost we got could be extremely important come the end of the league, particularly if Derry beat Cork today.

It would be absolutely massive for us if Cork were to get a win today. Though Derry still need to go to Ardee against a rejuvenated Louth side next time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,768 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

Ah, but I use an Amazon Fireatock to watch premier league soccer, do you expect me to boycott using that? Are you crazy man?? FFS!

Bottom line, most big businesses have blood on their hands, and use sport to wash these hands. From the companies mantioned above to and including the Irish and international banks who crashed in 2008 and that were all still paying for, nobody is clean.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,359 ✭✭✭Notmything

There's a thread for all the allianz stuff, can the talk be taken there and leave this for discussing actual matches.

Galway doing well with all the absentees.

Nasty stuff by langan attacking a Galway player over a nothing tackle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,238 ✭✭✭HBC08

The most obvious red card for Michael Langan in Donegal game, comes running from a distance,to get retribution on the Galway lad ,the ball not even in play and elbows him in the face.

Similar to Donal Vaughan in 2017 final except Donnie didn't have as much of a run up .

    Ref gives a black!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 143 ✭✭crackity_jones

Complete cop out by the referee, and linesman who must have been standing less than 5 metres away. Did Langan's action even meet the criteria for a black card? As always it takes a strong ref to show a red in such situations and that kind of ref doesn't grow on trees. And you'd have to imagine McGuinness will have some stern words for the player after. He does that in Croke Park and it will be red.

Dublin leading here at HT by 13 but I don’t think it’s enough. They won’t score much in second half and Roscommon could fill their boots with 2 pointers with that win behind them.

Weird seeing Dublin get a few two pointers but I’m worried it’s gonna be one of those big swing games we’ve been seeing.

The losers of Dublin v Armagh next weekend are most likely going down

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 462 ✭✭cgorzy

I think Armagh should have enough to beat Dublin but they’ll still be in danger even if they win. They’ll still need to beat Kerry in the last game to be sure of staying up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,250 ✭✭✭MacDanger

Yeah, to be certain they'll need to win that last game but it's hard to see Dublin winning in Salthill in the final round either

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,194 ✭✭✭Neddyusa

Would have agreed with you before today, but they've found some form... and more importantly a bit of fight...

I see them as more likely than Armagh to get two points from the remaining games.

So to me, it looks like Armagh to join Monagahan in D2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20 Cavanlad23

Can't believe Cavan are staring down the drop this year. Who would have thought bringing in the man who dismantled our youth setup, took a job at a rival while remaining games development offer wouldn't be any addition. Only saving grace is we have Offaly next week and Kildare look a bigger mess than us. Although I would not not be surprised if Offaly beat us.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,599 ✭✭✭legendary.xix

If Kildare stay in Division 2: Strong possibility both Division 3 finalists will qualify for the All Ireland.

If Kildare are relegated: Only the Division 3 winner can qualify for the All Ireland through the league, but will be first in line to miss out if a lower ranked county makes a provincial final.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,968 ✭✭✭Trampas

Roscommon awful shooting was part of the reason the huge points difference. Dublin didn’t score as many but didn’t need to score loads. More keep ticking the scoreboard over on a greasy day. Even with the wind behind it was good to see Dublin taking on 2 pointers

Linesman in Roscommon vs Dublin game completely ignore a moment when only 2 Dublin players in their own half. Wasn’t long maybe a few seconds but long enough to be called as it wasn’t one running back to swap with someone else

Looks to be between Mayo and Kerry to join Donegal in the final. Between Armagh and Dublin to avoid relegation, though Galway aren't safe either.

Derry going well. Clare in a 4 way D3 promotion race, to join Down. 5 way promotion race in D4.

Probably a 4 way race in D4. London are away to Carlow and Antrim in their last two games.

Down are the only county now with 100%, and still one county in each Division on zero points.
