Picking up deluxe edition from smyths this morning I pre-ordered last month. Also can’t wait to get stuck in but may not have much time to play it over the weekend.

That seems to be a fantastically scalable in house game engine Capcom have now. 60 FPS on Switch 2 to 60 FPS RT upscaled to 4K PS5 Pro. And the game just looks pristine. Great technology and artists at play here.

While the RE Engine has been very effective for - appropriately - the RE games, it has been a disaster for Dragon's Dogma 2 and Monster Hunter Wilds. I would've once considered it one of the more effective in-house engines out there (as recently as Monster Hunter Rise), but I think forcing it on games that clearly needed alternative technology has been a very unfortunate move.

So yes, while RE9 might continue a confident run for this series, it has had a much more mixed record beyond that.

Downloaded and ready to go for later on, looking forward to this, nice little 10 hour campaign. Perfect

Haven't they done a load of improvements for Monster Hunter Wilds recently ? And more on the way.

I played about half an hour last night on the base level PS5 and it looks gorgeous I have to say.

Intriguing story early on. Excited to get stuck in proper later.

The PS5 Pro version is built with the upgraded PSSR.

Got it for Switch 2 as the portable element suits me better at the moment even though I have the Series X and PS5 (don't really seem to use them a lot these days but that's another story)

Looking forward to getting stuck into it, it's a great series overall.

Jesus that's some intro. Incredible graphics (base ps5) but the sound is also outstanding and i don't even have headphones on. The RE engine is just top tier (for RE games anyway).

Also motion sickness profile is highly welcome and I've noticed a significant difference straight away.

I think this might be a creepier start than even Resi 7.

This game is best played with headphones to ad more tension.

Still only about an hour in but the Leon sections so far are pure fan service, which I’m here for.

Yeah they barely make sense but are loads of fun

The older I get, the less I want to play scary games. Is anyone else in the same boat?

Resident evil 1 on PS1 is one of my best gaming moments, nothing compares to the first zombie reveal.

I’m about halfway through the plot now, if ChatGPT is to be trusted. Very much enjoying it I have to say. They’ve balanced the Grace/ horror with the Leon/action segments nicely.

One thing I’d say - I would like slightly more challenging puzzles, but that’s not an issue specific to this game in fairness.

I've only completed RE2 remake main game, decided to do that before getting into the the other remakes fully.

Anyway, the simple puzzles are a lot harder with Mr. X stomping around the place. 😁

Also, I like the fact they are engaging enough to keep the momentum going. It's very Metroid like the way you unlock the whole area. But not frustrating and game blocking.

I'm still early in the game, Grace's first big section. Main issue so far has been the usual RE thing of inventory space. Have already had to drop 2 Antique coins, and about 4 large bullets for what I now realise is the Requiem (it only had the caliber so I assumed they were bullets for a rifle or something I hadn't gotten yet). All so I could pick up a key item which I use almost instantly and then get the inventory space back again. Able to craft those bullets now thankfully so not too bad.

Finished it yesterday evening. Thoroughly enjoyed some parts, others seemed like a slog for the sake of it though. Felt like the start didn't give you enough ammo (which was fine for Grace) but then you felt almost overloaded with it by the end. I think I might have used the rifle four or five times total the entire game, stuck with shotgun, handgun and Big Bertha Requiem for the most part.

The ammon situation seems to be a problem with modern resident evil games. They're great when resources are limited at the start but later on it turns into an action game and becomes less interesting.

Didn't the remakes have some sort of adaptive difficulty, where the strength and availability of ammo (and some other resources) changes based on how much ammo you have with you? I'm pretty sure it was some sort of speedrun strategy to barely pick up any ammo so you were more likely to get critical headshots.

I think it's probably also a consequence of how we know how to play an RE game at this stage. I know I'm still early in the game so I'm trying to conserve as much ammo as possible, which will likely mean I end up with loads by the end.

They've had that type of dynamic difficulty since resident evil 4.

I guess as you get further in the game and you pick up more guns that they have to give you ammo for those guns to play around with.

That's what it is really, you can literally restock from a crate rather than having to find it in some cases. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the game, but not having to conserve ammo towards the latter stages was a bit jarring and took the 'risk' out of it. Leon's segments are built like that though I guess.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 37,414 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Well I'm going to need some of that dynamic difficulty to help me out, because I already dumped 4 bullets for the Requiem because I needed inventory space, and before I finished last night I missed two shots trying to take down a new enemy type, as well as having to use about 10 normal bullets on the f*cker.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 58,506 ✭✭✭✭Necro

Ha, yeah those things are literal bullet sponges. Just when you think you've cleared an area too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 37,414 ✭✭✭✭Penn

I was guessing they'd get back up into something, especially since you get a prompt to hit them with the injection thing after they're already downed. Just wasn't expecting them to be as tough as they are, or to maybe not get back up until Leon's section if he's going through the same areas.

Only booted it up for an hour or so over the weekend as wanted to polish off Silent Hill f before getting into this. That’s done now so will give it a proper go over the next few days.

Runs pretty well on PC - definitely not a Monster Hunter situation here, thankfully. Can definitely get big performance gains with tweaking the Ray tracing settings or turning them off entirely. I’ve stuck to High on a 3070 and still getting well over 60 FPS in the busy areas, with DLSS balanced.

First impressions are positive. Was so-so about Village but this has a nice mix of horror and action so far. Leon feels great to play as - definitely some modern flourishes but still the absurd, roundhouse kicking badass he was in RE4.

The door is locked on the other side ffs.

1/3 through this. Absolutely class. The Grace bits are like Resident Evil 2 and Leon bits are like Resident Evil 4.
