Potayto potato. His thing is he always wants to just shoot with his right foot for the far post. Doesn't have to be a specific lead up to it. And before you say something like "Salah is the same sure" really think about that as a response….

Do you wanna know what got the biggest cheer out of me the whole game today, given the fact that ya can't celebrate goals anymore cos of VAR? It was the one time in the first half that Kerkez played it to Gakpo and ran behind and Gakpo actually played it back to him and we created a chance really easily as a result. Like, it only took the dude 7 months to realise all he has to do is play it back to kerkez after he receives it from him like that for us to create a really good chance.

The problem isn't even Gakpo per se, he is a league winning player and deservedly so. The issue is really having no one to rotate him properly with, like Diaz last season. In a perfect world Isak is fit and firing and Ekitike rotates with him and gakpo but when have we ever existed in a perfect world?

The biggest cheer I heard was the "Going Down, Going Down" chant response to West Ham fans saying our supporters are shite

If it's any consolation, I don't remember any of your posts criticising Gakpo. So theres no need to "take umbrage".

EDIT: I can't even find any posts from you in the thread criticising Gakpo.

Or Jota, who, it seems, they planned on having this season.

You preserved your winning margin record 😋

Odd match yesterday, didn't feel dominant at all but obviously delighted with the scoreline. The atmosphere was absolute crap though

Liverpool broke me, currently sat outside the bombed out church desperately trying to shift my hangover before flying home 🙈

Looking forward to watching it back later, haven't seen any of the coverage yet. The one I really want to see is the Ekitike charge that was blocked just before half time, the build up for that was brilliant

Good result, didn't see the game, but, was keeping an eye on the score, great to get the early goals, makes a huge difference in how the game pans out. Hopefully Arsenal can do us a favour later. Big few weeks coming up, we need to make the most of our favourable upcoming fixture list to cement our place in the top 5, as 3 of our last 4 games are against our direct opponents for top 5 and Brentford is out last match, a really difficult end to our league campaign.

Surprised to hear you say the atmosphere was crap

I was thinking it was fairly good watching on TV for a 3 o'clock KO

Have a curer and rejoice in the fact we got a win on your trip. Nothing worse than when we get beaten after the hardship of getting there in the 1st place.

Im on a three game without a win run. Im barring myself from Anfield at this stage

Not sure how anyone could say Gakpo is a limited player or not good enough. He had a really good season last year, very consistent and an important cog in us winning the league. An important player for the Netherlands too

He’s not having a great season, that’s for sure. And i think his goal contributions number (which is decent) inflate his output, as it seems to me that many of his goals have been ‘icing on the cake’ rather than deadlock breakers.

But he’s still better than Chiesa and Rio. Slot wants to win games and sees them every single day. I back his judgement. Like everyone, i am excited by Rio and love seeing him getting game time, but the stat that he has the most PL minutes of any 17 year old this season is interesting.

In saying that, when Wirtz is back, I’d like to see that meaning that Cody and Mo get rotated, rather than breaking up our midfield trio.

Found the bloody Mary's to cure myself 😋

Yeah, thought the atmosphere was very poor, sadly. I've probably been spoiled by being in the kop the last few games, was in the main stand this time

I know I should be hoping for an Arsenal win today but I just can't do it.

    Draw would do just fine.

I've noticed over the years that Gakpo is streaky, similar also to how Jota was. When you have a streaky player, you usually want them playing regularly as you never really know when they are going to switch on. People have short memories but Gakpo was pretty phenomenal at Euro 24, I remember watching him thinking he was going to kick on like crazy for us the next season. I think this season he has been about average.

It seems to be a philosophy for Liverpool, to buy streaky players ever since the MSF era. Perhaps it's an issue with the data nerds again, you're seeing their peak performance and aiming to get that output on the regular, but you end up with periodic purple patches. It doesn't matter when you have someone anchoring the front like Salah, but when Salah dropped off and we turned to others, then there was no one there.

Personally I would again lay the blame on the recruitment and long-term planning rather than Gakpo, or Slot. We again don't have the depth of squad or strong enough back-up when players run into poor form.

VAR is fecking awful. Yellow card and free kick is the correct decision... No var sees red card and penalty.

In fairness the ref had already given a penalty, so can't blame VAR for that part.

Yea it was an outrageously soft penalty, and generally one they haven't been applying DOGSO too, so hard to understand overall.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,359 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

Started way out side box, Cunha only ran on as to dive hysterically to the ground in the box.

Must be a lot of love for United in the VAR room today.

Thankfully 5th gets CL, as there is a lot to contend with with United off the pitch, Villa and Chelsea are ones we need to lose

If Arsenal lose today, and United win Wednesday, United close to 7pts behind Arsenal

I thought it should be brought back to where the foul was initiated, and then perhaps still DOGSO but free outside the box. I also though if a pen is given it's usually not a red card for DOGSO, but perhaps that changed?

Such a soft penalty though, really quite a bit of luck that Carrick is on. I'd expect he will get found out at some stage, but maybe they'll give him the contract already.

Amazing what happens in this league when a team can just get its act together for a run of a few games. Villa down to 4th now, and their form is going in the opposite direction.

Got to ask what was the difference between the red card for Palace and why didn't City get a red card for the same foul V Liverpool

Because it’s means Arsenal drop 2 , not rocket science

But Chelsea are our closest rival in the table. If you cheer them on to equalise here it's a dangerous game because they go on and win and they overtake us in the table

Arsenal dropping points is irrelevant to us at best, but i'd argue it makes things worse for us

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,452 ✭✭✭jones

We're not really competing with Arsenal at the moment though, so for us the "best" result is an arsenal win and keep us 3 points ahead of Chelsea.

I dislike arteta and the football they play but we aren't winning the league so it's the lesser of two evils in my mind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,878 ✭✭✭✭8-10

I think Villa can be caught but given our last 4 games I don't want Chelsea close to us

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,395 ✭✭✭jesuisjuste

Agreed, if city want to win the title they're going to have to go out and get the job done themselves. Any time Arsenal play a rival we should be looking for points dropped. As things stand we're sitting in top 5 champions league spots, with a 3 point gap and ten games to go, which given how our season has been to date is a very good position to be in. If we can continue to kick on from here we should be looking at finishing top 3.

I long ruled us out of competing with Arsenal . I just don’t want them winning the league. Their absolute dependence on set pieces , OGs and corners again like today again is brutal to watch and the fanbase is intolerable. With 5 CL places we can finish ahead of Villa or Chelsea without needing Arsenal to do us any favours but they are not dropping points today either way.
