I think a lot of players fall into this trap when they really need a win. They go away from thinking positively, choosing positive shots, executing positively, to something more defensive. With his ability with wedge he must be furious with that approach on 18, if he'd been positive he'd have won that tournament. The holed putts when he needed to, opportunities to win dont come along that often.

I'm glad in a way I didn't watch the golf today(yesterday at this stage), I forgot all about it. It sounds so frustrating having read about the ending, and that's just for me. I can only imagine how Shane is feeling. That's going to sting for some time and possibly cause even more mental scarring.

I assume he didn’t do any interviews after the round yesterday as didn’t see any quotes from him. It’ll give him a few days to calm down as I would assume he was like a bull after it which is understandable.

He is a professional. He had a bad hole. He will have forgotten about it in a few days. Sometimes you just have bad holes or even days. If you didnt you would be winning every week.

its Hard to win, unless you are Rory ,Lowry is having a fantastic career and has some bigs wins to his credit, check the scoring at the end of most tournements and lots of players faulter at or near last hole.

If you are around 30th in the world for a period of years you will have a lucrative career without many wins, problem for Shane is hes regularly compared to one of all time greats in recent times and thats not a fair measure of him as a golfer.

If (say) the 7th on Day 1 was the bad hole then fair enough, but 1 shot lead teeing off into the middle of the fairway is a different beast, he caved with his approach and it cost him the Win, he knows it, all the golfing world knows it

Lets be honest, this has happened a few times over the last couple of years. There was no excuse for what happened from the middle of the fairway on 18. He was playing very well up until then so there's no reason for this to happen unless the finish line got to him.

Will he be raging with himself that he messed up 18? -absolutely yes. In a few days , will he realise that he's in super early season form, & so he should earn a greater number of chances to win again this season? A0bsolutely yes. Will he allow an unfortunate tightening up on the last, in an early season event, get to him?- No - I'd sincerely doubt that anyways.

Overall a really great showing from both Irish golfers in this early season event, in fairness to them both!! Looking forward to watchimg both of them compete through this season!! Gwan de Lads!!!

As it happens a par would only have got him into a play-off against Elvira who was about to birdie 17 as Shane was finishing 18. A bit like Thierry Henry's handball, it cost the chance to go for a win, not a win itself

Monty one of the European all time great winners needed a par to win US open and had a 6,happens to best of them.

Did Paddy choke in 2007 open when he had double at last ,no because he subsequently won it,Lowry put himself in great position to win and had a bad hole ,thats all.

Had a session with a sports psychologist once. He told me that the only reason a player holds onto a bad hole is for the media session later on. Ask him the next day and he will say "what are you talking about. I dont remember a bad hole". The technique is to throw away all the bad things and move forward.

It looks like Shane made a last minute decision to switch clubs and probably took 1 more than originally planned to punch a cut under the wind. Seemed to stay very straight and didn't take any distance off with the cut. I'm not sure there was a whole lot he could do out of the bunker. Rory could only get it to 20 ft. Downhill and down grain. Was position Z.

Anyway, mistake was in the clubbing. Don't think he actually hit a bad shot just bad selection. Didn't leave himself a chance out of bunker then

Surprised to see him on the timesheet this week as bay hill and players next few week. Making it five weeks in a row.

It's probably his most successful course on the PGA tour though

Read an article recently about this. Can't remember which site maybe Indo or IT. A fave course of his and almost a home venue in Florida. Either that or be at home grinding out the week. No brainer.

Right up there. Smotherman you’d assume he’ll come back and he needs to be there to strike if he does

Gap down from 6 shots to just 1 now.
Early start due to the weather.

Eagle chance to take lead. Great chance now to really put himself into pole position

Lowry moves into the lead on -12;with a birdie on 17. Moore had been in the lead on that number, but bogeyed the 14th.

Shane finishes with a birdie on the par 5 18th to go 2 shots clear on -13. He was -8 for today and the lowest score today.

There's still a few left playing that could close the gap.

Some amount of absolute no names in this tournament...Is Lowry the only Top 50 player there?

First time in a long time I've seen Shane keeping the cool, wasn't put off by a few misses and chatted away with his caddie after the few baddish shots. Can see him giving this a great go and he really knows this course. Best of luck to him, really deserves one but has to go out there and take it. It's there for him and it's a big enough one too. Serious money and what would it do for his confidence?
