If you keep buying the upgrade, there's zero incentive for Samsung to do anything other than mediocre updates

It's gotten to the point where you really need to question if there's any need for annual releases.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 949 ✭✭✭Nickindublin

It depends as some people upgrade every 3 or 4 years so they probably want the latest. I think there is no need to upgrade every year but people do like myself.

I used to be an upgrade every year guy but phones are now at a point where all yearly upgrades are pretty minimal. I bought the S23 ultra on launch 3 years ago and I literally didn't need a new phone until this year and that's only because the battery went t*ts up after oneui 8.0

The S25u far out sold the S24u. I think this is why the discounts aren't as good this year. They didn't even offer double storage in the US pre sale

Correct. As long as people keep buying the discounts and trade in prices will go down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 949 ✭✭✭Nickindublin

My OH says the same with Apple upgrades. The phones slow down. I saw on redditt that make sure you get a case on the S26 as the aluminium dents real easy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,452 ✭✭✭jones

Definitely a bit of planned obsolescence going on in addition to batteries aging.

Ps did anyone get the €30 credit for registering for the live event? I never got anything from Samsung at all.

I have an s23 and it has suspiciously gotten slow in the last 2 weeks... 👀

Don't recall the credit thing, but other than the €100 off code and the 10% code, don't recall getting anything else.

Not much use with 15% codes freely available anyway. At least the Paypal option whips another ton off.

Last year I was able to stack code. But not this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,328 ✭✭✭masterboy123

Where did you get the €100 off code? Can you stack with the 15% code?

Did you drop your own phone and break the space key?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 115 ✭✭ImTiredOfItAll

Sorry. I've no idea what happened to the text on my original post.

My daughter dropped her 23u & broke the screen but the metal body was in perfect condition.

The Galaxy S range is the toughest, most resilient of all Samsung phones.

The galaxy S26u isn't released yet so I don't believe anyone has a dented S26u at the moment

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,452 ✭✭✭jones

It's not released here yet but it's definitely out in the wild around the world. The switch back to aluminium will mean it'll dent easier but should have better heat dissipation (apparently)

From Samsung - that and a 10%. There is no stacking of codes though, so the best current option is a 15% code and the paypal in a 'normal'purchase. It's not 'amazing' but it's not terrible either TBH - takes about 370 euro off what I was thinking about going for.

Had a quick play around with the S26 Ultra in the 3 shop on Grafton St. today. I'm upgrading from an S22 Ultra due to battery issues. Seems like nice upgrade to be fair.

Battery looks to be very good. I don't really understand the hate the phone is getting online.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,702 ✭✭✭xtal191

People whinge every year with a new release, only thing I'm annoyed with is how **** the trade in/pre order deals are this year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 34,886 ✭✭✭✭listermint

As a package the upgrade between 24 and today is fck all. So thats part of the story.

Samsung like apple have gone into the do nothing ground breaking approach . Tiny tiny stuff and market the **** out of it.w

Thats the reality. They use the S range to pay for programs like fold, but don't spend or innovate much in the S range. Is what it is.

I believe last year you predicted that the S25 wouldn't get near the sales of S24, which didn't turn out to be the case.

Maybe this will be the year, and if it is I'd say a massive factor is the cost of upgrade is considerably higher.

I don't think I've gone more than a year without changing phones in over 20 years. This could be the first year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,328 ✭✭✭masterboy123

You have always motivated me to get a new phone every year with the best deals, but it seems like I will be using S25U for another year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 34,886 ✭✭✭✭listermint

Well my prediction was mostly accurate. It did the sales but it volumes of how and when we're completely different to the S24U.

I stand by what I said though. The S24U is actually more than enough phone with scant all difference between the 25 and 26. It's ridiculous tbh. Ultra me hole. Call them Pros because they don't deserve the ultra tag. You look at what the Xiaomi is doing at a lower price point and you have to scratch your head.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 949 ✭✭✭Nickindublin

I actually think if the price was right its a nice upgrade. Have they kept the price down more via poor trade in values? probably yes. I think the hate it is getting is more to do with battery etc. But bad press is good press. I would think anyone with S23U or older it will be a good upgrade. Personally i think the S26 and S26+ are a no no. My advice would be go for an S25 or S25+ as Exynos is unknown battey wise.

Yeah its like people are just frustrated with the lack of innovation in general in the mobile world at the moment but this phone really seems to be the lightning rod for criticism more so than any others in recent memory. Reddit is also universally giving out about how sh*t it is blah blah blah.

The battery is the obvious spec to jump on as lack of progress and it did surprise me that they havent increased the size in what 5 years almost? However it seems like there's a lot more efficiencies going on under the hood going by the battery reviews its significantly outperforming the S25U. My S23Ultra had amazing battery life for the first 2 year it was only last year and Oneui 8.0 that seemed to kill it. Its horrendous now hence the switch.

The privacy screen is innovative (i've seen some mad claims online about it but at least they are trying something new) wait until Apple do their inevitable version and it will be heralded as the second coming of christ when it happens :-) The screen is now 10 bit and the phone now charges at 60w, the camera while very similar has a more detailed lense for low light, its thinner and lighter. All in all i think its a good standard iteration.

The days of upgrading a phone every year are gone for most people unless you get crazy good trade in deals. As others said if its not for you just skip it but everything these things is the worst thing ever or else the best. There is no happy medium. Either way i'm looking forward to getting my hands on it i'm assuming they are being sent out Friday.

€559 due with 15% code, trade in S25U and pay with PayPal.

Not too bad but not as good as previous years where I'd get another 150/250 for the broken device trade in.

Trade in is €615, say I might get €700 on adverts selling privately to save a bit extra.

Will probably order anyway but wait for a few days in case of better deals.

I think it'll be a lot worse next year because apparently Samsung ordered the memory before the price increases so that's going to drive up the cost for the next release and maybe the one after that too, especially if Taiwan is under attack then.

Xiaomi doesn't offer compelling enough deals in Ireland. The 17 Ultra is €1500, and I can't see any discounts available. I'm currently stranded in Australia due to this crap in Iran, and when I googled it I got the Aussie pricing. Works out to €1000 here, much more aggressive discounts and promotion on launch.
