Yep, a win on Wednesday and mood music changes completely, and after we're better against top teams that attack and allow us space to counter, than bottom teams that we can't break down

I think we will be fine when McGinn and Tielemans are back, maybe earlier. Weve gone on several unreal runs under Emery, I reckon he will do it again.

There is definitely a thing where we get better results against better teams and at the moment, those are the 6 pointers for us.

The fa cup game was the derailing of us. Fill the coffers with CL money and the silverware will come.

Yes, that’s my thoughts next two PL games are crucial but getting back to winning ways in the league rather than relying on a one off Europa League game would be the way forward there’s also the possibility of our rivals slipping up.

It would of course be great to win the Europa League and finish in the top 4 a trophy in the cabinet and a boost to the finances.

Hard to see both as possible in the squads current state. Suspect one will become the priority depending on what happens in next few games.

Being unable to invest properly in proven top level performers and being forced to sell homegrown talent has caught up with this squad. Look at the team that started the last day.

Martinez: world class keeper prone to moments of stupidity and in decline.

Cash: Hat off to him, wanted him gone but has matured into a top level full back

Konsa: Classy Cente half, gets into most teams, no leadership qualities and not physically dominating

Pau: Tidy on the ball, no physical presence

Digne: Busted flush, 33 years of age, Championship level.

Onnana: Has potential to be top level, but only shows it in flashes, injury prone, physically soft for a big man and don't think he has it upstairs to push on.

Luiz: A busted flush, panic cover for injury crisis, hasn't the legs for this level

Sancho: Has shown flashes of former glories but generally medicore, another stray Villa are trying to recuperate because they can't buy the real thing due to financial restraints.

Rogers: Genuine top quality talent, being nullified by opponents at the moment because they can focus on him because of lack of quality around him.

Bundeia: Has some good qualities but is too small and hot headed, not Premier leauge standard, attempted to shift him on, but he is back because Villa are desperate.

    Watkins: Busted flush simple as.

I can't understand why people are surprised Wolves beat that outfit and I am even more surprised that people have hopes that that raggle taggle can beat both Chelsea and United.

Yes Maatsen and Abraham would improve that 11, maybe Alyson but it is definitely lower mid table quality at the moment.

The disappointing thing about the Wolves performance was that it was a continuation of the Leeds game. We don’t seem to be able to learn from past history and have the ability to change things

Hard to imagine it improving until McGinn and Tielemans are back and Elliot can play games again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,955 ✭✭✭Patser

We knew Utd were coming after us, we knew they'd catch us, but that soft peno and red that basically gifted them the game just adds to a sense if injustice in the league.

We can't spend, they can despite massive debt.

They get soft decisions, we've had ZERO penalties all season

You may be right but we need to take care of own business first

Elliott hasn’t made any contribution to where we are in the league so I’m not bothered about him not playing. With McGinn and Tielemans we need them back and fully match fit, they’re likely to need a couple of games to get to there, hard to see them saving us, the players available now need to do it. I thought with the week between games Emery would have it working by now as he has found a way every other time but it has been disappointing. Hopefully he finds a way against Chelsea. Does Neto miss the game after his 2 yellows today?

Neto is out today yeah. Hard to imagine Elliot is not better than Buendia. Play him in as many games as you can play him without having to buy him.

We have 5 games to go until big international break - and that includes the 2 Lille games.

Chelsea next, and we get anything from that, then best Chelsea can hope for is to be level at International break.

Utd is next in Prem League and McGinn eas talking about that being return date.

Then West Ham - again might have McGinn at least back.

After that its 3 weeks til we play Forest, and Tielemans should be back by then.

So priority 1, is get something from Chelsea, even a draw. Looking at their disciplinary record I'm guessing about 40 of their players are suspended (Neto at least). After that we go to Old Trafford so any miracle is a bonus.

Priority 2 is to get by Lille - who'll be baying for blood - but Emery knows cup ties better than any. But would be great to Europa League route to Champ League open.

Priority 3 beat West Ham, that'll guarantee we're still in top 5 going into long break, when players can be rested, or reintegrated in Tielamans case.

After that we're into last 7 games of season, hopefully with better midfield in place, so Wednesday is the key. Just don't lose

What do we roughly need for top 4/5 is it about 5 wins?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,955 ✭✭✭Patser

Depends on the opponent, there's 10 games left, we're 6 ahead of Chelsea. Win on Wednesday and Chelsea are 9 behind with 9 to play, so mathematically that would mean 6 wins would be enough (IF we win) - then Chelsea would need 9 wins to match us.

I can see Utd and Liverpool finishing ahead of us, so Chelsea are the marker

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 462 ✭✭cgorzy

Yeah I don’t see a reason not to play Elliott for how many games he has left, I think Emery gave up on him though for not being better than Buendia!

Chelsea have plenty of wingers to replace him but Neto does drive them forward with a bit of pace so not sorry to see him out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,156 ✭✭✭✭CSF

I think Emery was expecting Liverpool might drop the clause in January, but at least now he can play in all the European games. He can play in 5 of the remaining 10 games (obviously Liverpool won’t be one so it’s 5 of 9 really).

Need to make something positive of that loan deal down the stretch or else it’s a really poor mark on the clubs recruitment/planning

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,775 ✭✭✭LeBash

I dont see Elliot playing much. We have about 5 games left, hes played basically nothing, so he wont be match fit and we definitely wont see the best of him.

Ive a funny feeling he will end up at Villa next season for a much smaller fee than 35 million.

I reckon 66 points will get top 5 this season. I know It didn’t guarantee it last season for ye but I think it will this season if ye can manange it

I like the Adidas stuff they dropped the last week or so, not cheap though!

Elliot surely despises Emery and would be very reluctant to sign

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,955 ✭✭✭Patser

    Jersey is sold out already.

Its definitely an Adidas thing though, as Sunderland, Everton and Leeds have near identical stuff

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 462 ✭✭cgorzy

Is is just made by Fanatics without Adidas being involved? Sunderland and Everton are other manufacturers for kits.

I think Fanatics just hold the distribution rights.

I imagine Liverpool will go ahead of us tonight with their game away to Wolves. We just can’t let that 5th place slip away from us again, beating Chelsea will go a long way to securing CL football

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,156 ✭✭✭✭CSF

Hard to think of a game since Newcastle away where you could take anything to bring confidence that Villa can win a game of that magnitude.

Emery shown no signs that he has any answers with the current available players. Probably need to hope for a few big swings in the game (and obviously these do happen in football) because it’s hard to imagine the same players just showing up and suddenly being the better team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,362 ✭✭✭pavb2

Yes too often we go into a game thinking it will be different and the real Villa will show up but we seem to be playing in a state of lethargy at the moment, lack urgency and wait for the opposition to score to kick us into life. Hopefully When Tielemans and McGinn are back we can step it up a bit but it might well be too late by the time they get match fit

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,156 ✭✭✭✭CSF

I don’t think it’ll be too late. The worst it can look going into the 3 week break is Villa 3 points behind Chelsea. That would require Villa to lose to Chelsea, Man United and West Ham and Chelsea also to beat Newcastle and Everton.

If the reports are correct on McGinn and Tielemans and they’re back, I’d think Villa will be a different animal coming out of the international break. That doesn’t mean it’ll be top 5, because there’s every reason the top teams will be in form, but it shouldn’t be the mess we’ve seen since January where the team just looks lost.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,362 ✭✭✭pavb2

That we look lost is a good way of putting it, but mentally and from a motivational point of view between the Europa and top 5 there’s a lot to play for and teams in and around us will drop points

I see that Irish Villa top is out of stock already. She's not happy as it was an easy birthday present for me.
