VMTV have picked up the rights to all summer and autumn internationals for the the next four years (2026 and 2028 The Nations Championship, 2027 Summer Nations Series and 2029 Autumn Nations Series). Same rights as ITV recently obtained in the UK.

May have asked this question already but I think this is the first time, certainly since the 1990s, that Ireland’s summer window games (in a non RWC year) will be live and free to air?

    In some very unsurprising news:

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/rugby-union/2026/02/04/gregor-townsend-take-over-newcastle-red-bulls/

Scotland coach Gregor Townsend to take over at Newcastle Red Bulls after World Cup

Exclusive: Appointment as director of rugby will be significant coup for Prem side despite pressure on 52-year-old going into Six Nations

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,670 ✭✭✭FtD v2

Apparently Townsend has denied these reports in the team announcement of the Scottish side - called them just "speculation".

Think that's fairly unlikely (albeit not impossible) but they'd be mad to keep him on after anyway.

Looks slightly suspect for Toulouse here…

Under the table payments to Dupont and Jelonch to subvert the salary cap? They've already been fined and docked points for the Jaminet salary cap breach.

    They should be Saracens'd

Seems like exactly the same thing from that yeah. Though obviously nothing proven etc but L'Equipe probably not messing around with their reporting.

Sky appear to have picked up a very late renewal on the Sanzaar rights, 48 hours before the season begins! No announcement yet but they’ve been added as a rights holder on the Super Rugby website.

RFU were afraid to take Nigel Wray on legally so they came to an agreeable compromise, demotion, Sarries kept all their titles and rewrote employment agreements.

Wray has the goods on and support of all Premiership clubs and co-ownership of residential properties continues on and has not been wound down, Wray has retired from day to day stuff but remains a powerful figure behind the scenes and leader of club owners.

Has anybody tried Trackman-style analysis of rugby place-kicking and kickers, eg looking at height, spin rates, wobble, curve (fade, draw) as well as simple things like angle, distance and accuracy, and correlating them with success? Are kicks that look and sound better more likely to end well?

Do teams need more players who can kick from play, including drop goals? The opportunity for a 50-22 could come to anybody.

If I could go back in time and gently remove the ringleaders of the LNR and PRC that have led to this utter shitshow…

I see the English are doing away with relegation and promotion....12 team top league...

10 to begin with going up to 12 in 2029.

The last two might be traditional clubs but rumours are they hope the bidding will bring big money new franchises. Birmingham FCs new Yank owners are apparently mulling the idea of a Birmingham club.

With any luck they also expand the name of the league in time by adding ier.

I reckon the welsh will take a fancy to this new set up...

Except the English won't. Why would they take on that sht show to add to their own problems. The Welsh don't really bring any marquee players or big crowds to the table.

I think we will see a reverse of rugby leagues attempts to have a London team and try hard to get 2 teams set up in the big Midlands or Northern urban centres.

The Welsh have been looking enviously at the Premiership for decades. The problem for them is that the Premiership doesn't want them (and this stubborn refusal to accept reality is why they haven't embraced the frankly much better URC)

  • Subscribers, Paid Member Posts: 44,927 ✭✭✭✭sydthebeat

not a hope in hell the welsh club system will be in a balanced and settled position by 2029 to be able to take a PREM (urrghh) place.

Ealing, with their 6000 capacity stadium, should (and i expect will) take up one of those places. All they have to do is point to newcastles average attendance over the last few seasons being less than 6000 per game to show that a 6000 capacity stadium should be considered adequate, and that this '10,000 requirement' is overkill and simply red tape designed originally to keep teams out of the premiership.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,065 ✭✭✭✭AbusesToilets

Ealing won't be a part of it. Their owner is going to die soon, and his heirs aren't likely to be interested in bankrolling his team further. They've refused to invest in the needed infrastructure for years that would allow them to take a spot in the Premiership.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,556 ✭✭✭StevenToast

They are talking about 20 clubs in this new set up by 2040!

Wales would love to stick their 3 or 4 in that pot....along with wasps, worcester, london Irish.....bring on a few others like Ealing etc...

I have no idea how else they would viably make it up to 20 clubs.....Could make sense for the welsh to tag along....

Where do you see talk of 20 clubs by 2040? I haven't seen anything about expansion beyond 12 teams by 2030

Absolutely fooling themselves if they think they can get to 20 financially stable top division rugby teams.

  • Subscribers, Paid Member Posts: 44,927 ✭✭✭✭sydthebeat

the rules about the infrastructure are unwarranted and unnecessary. It make absolutely zero business sense to construct a 10,000 capacity stadium for premiership games, especially for a team like Ealing. They could easily play their larger capacity games in twickenham, as saracens do (who are much further away from twickenham)

Sale, for example, dont own their stadium, they lease it from Salford city council. Sales average attendance is just about 7,000.

as for mike gooley dying, id be highly surprised if he hasnt made arrangements for the financial continuation of the trailfinders.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,065 ✭✭✭✭AbusesToilets

if it was going to happen, it would have by now. They've had years to do so if they wanted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,679 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

It would be much better if teams could just prove they have the ability to increase capacity. Big difference between a landlocked 5000 capacity stadium and one where you can pop up a few new stands if demand grows.

Quality should matter far more than capacity when it comes to wanting to grow from a small fanbase.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 5,320 Mod ✭✭✭✭Lost Ormond

I know theyre now in league one after back to back relegations but if Luton town could play premier league soccer in kenilworth road then having a restriction to clubs having more than a 10000 capacity for prl rugby is nuts.

Yeah totally quality should be far more important than just total capacity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,679 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Luton was a throwback novelty something as big as the Premier League could afford.

When similar teams got promoted in Serie A a few years back big team owners lost their sht because it made the league look amateur. And that's the angle English rugby is coming from. They want the infrastructure to look big and shiny for the TVs and Google. They want the online brochure to show pictures of 12 Thomond Parks or Ravenhills not 12 Pairc Ui Rinns or Tolka Parks.

I don't think it's gonna work the same way I think almost any other attempt at chasing the money in rugby hasn't worked.

Dave Rennie the new head coach of the All Blacks.

That’s a great appointment IMO - he’s someone I’d always hoped would end up with Leinster or Ireland.

He'll do great I think. Australia were fools to dump him, he had them playing really well.
