WAC have said he wasn’t asked back in? Are you saying that’s incorrect?

To be honest, has he played that much in the last couple of years? I criticised the podcast lads last year when they picked his absence out against Meath as a key factor in the loss. The fact is he’s played a lot of football starting his intercounty career early and, if memory serves me correctly, he’s been missing more than he’s been available for the last 24 months.

He was one of the players actually named last year by the individual involved with the 2024 management who told me they walked away because Galligan wasn’t willing to make the changes required to the panel.

Clarke went through the lads cut on the podcast and I wouldn’t have any issue with some of them being left at home. It’s harsh I know but some have been given opportunities and were poor.

I’m saying this as someone who is not in any way a supporter of the Gowna Development Manager. I don’t see the issue as who has been cut though by him - the issue is the man is in a development job the last 12 years and has developed little or nothing.

As the mylestheslasher says above, we’ve a county board full of cowards that he bosses around.

Care to elaborate Thunderbirds on your comment re: U20 management?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 339 ✭✭ipitydafool

I assume he is referring to the u20 coach and the club he is the senior manager for. Tbh I would have no issue with most of those 6 selected, maybe one of them wasn't on minor panels but all the rest were. The division they were put in for the u20 championship is a separate issue to county selection. I am surprised no one from Shercock on it,were 3 or 4 of that minor team (u18) that should of won a Division 1 league last year and played in senior Division 2 league final and intermediate championship, on college teams and prior Cavan underage panel's but suddenly not good enough for u20 one, I know some underage again next year but so are half a dozen or more of this years panel.

I have no issue with any of them either. But they were also very lucky to win division 2 u20 championship so not sure if in wrong division

    Predictions for tomorrow?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 600 ✭✭✭Thunderbirds

Think we win a tight game. Kildare missing a lot of players apparently.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,721 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

I thought Clarke threw a bit of shade re the U20s also when it was mentioned about Shercock being in Div 2 this year. He stated last year that Shercock for the League didn’t have him, Sean Clarke and 3 minor/U20 lads that they’ll have this year because they were cut.

I’d certainly have no issue with 4 of them but, like I said, I don’t see how a team that were in Division 2 U20 can have such a strong representation on the county panel. Either the grading of the team was grossly wrong or they shouldn’t have six players on the panel. One or the other has to be wrong.

And this is something we’ve seen at numerous age levels over the years. I’ve given multiple examples on here. Then we all wonder why our county team is the way it is.

Re ages, there are several lads on the U20 panel just out of county minor - Quigley, McConnell & Graham for example. They are all still minor club this year.

Our Dear Leader on the phone this week I hear asking a few lads back in. I am reliably informed at least one told him to **** off & they will be back when he is gone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,721 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

Sounds like pub talk to be honest. Our “dear leader” as you call him is not the type to back down and admit he was wrong.

Killian Clarke even commented that a run of poor results wouldn’t bother McCabe whatsoever.

If I was Shercock or Ballyhaise I would be throwing shade too, won promotion on merit last year to Division 1 and don't get to realise it this year. That person who told McCabe to piss off when he rang could be waiting a while before he is gone, no matter the results no one on county board will have the back bone to remove him too quickly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,721 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

I wonder if someone wrote to the county board and said they spent €** attending League games last year and now they’re null and void essentially, what the response would be?

The relegation and promotion games for example were particularly pointless.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 101 ✭✭quidel7

It would be a fair climb down for management to suddenly pick up the phone to be asking lads to come into the county panel, piplip87. Wouldn’t think that be their form to make a u-turn. Who those players phoned would be interesting to know if that story were to be true.

Say what you like about the manager, he can’t go out on the field and kick the ball over the bar for them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71 ✭✭South of the Bann

Massive result for Louth today. Not sure if it changed much if we still beat Offaly and Louth?

But obviously Louths tails be up now and might pick up another result before then.

Congrats to our dear leader on his first win today

We'll take it all day long. At this stage points matter more than performances.

A good day for the Ladies as well. They beat Donegal away to replace them at the top of Division 2. Came up from Division 3 last year. 3 league points for a win in the Ladies game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,721 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

A win is a win. Kildare were very poor and we made hard work of the game. The shooting at times was diabolical. There wasn’t even pressure on kickers so I can’t understand the misses at this level.

I thought if anyone would have put a bit of physicality into our team it’d be McCabe but maybe it isn’t in them. How many times did the goalie catch the ball in the first half and nobody even clattered into him? Gearoid came on and the Kildare 14 held him off the first kick out. Land him on his arse at least.

It’s unfair to criticise him to be honest because without him, Oisin Brady and Corrigan, we wouldn’t have 2 points tonight.

A good win. Although the scoreline flattered Kildare in the end. The amount of chances we created in the first half and dropped short or easy wides. Pity Lynch wasn't fit for the Meath game.

Louth will be tough a game but a must win I think, we don't want to be going to Celtic park needing a win either.

Sickening that we had the two form teams in the division bet, until the last few minutes, really seen the nerves kicking in today in the last 3 or 4 minutes.

Conor Brady made a vital interception as if it had got through they would have had a 3 on 1 and game over

Did Ciaran Brady from Galway play today?

I don’t remember seeing him as I thought they’d bring him or Donohoe on. He’s not named on the subs here:

No he was pulled from the starting lineup. I got mixed up on the original post so many bradys.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭Bduff1

A good result, dire shooting in the first half. Doesn't matter how pretty as long as its two points. Corrigan was my motm. Liam Brady some shaky kicks I thought. They hang in the air too much.

We usually beat Louth but who knows what could happen. Atleast we are at home I reckon should do it. Steamroll Offaly and hopefully will leave us safe.

No team is to be taken lightly but it would appear that our Div 2 survival hinges on the Louth game. They didn't like seeing us winning yesterday and we didn't like seeing them get points out of Tyrone. Hard to see this team getting any change above in Celtic Park, unless our shooting percentages improve. But you have to lay down some sort of marker given they're on our side of the Ulster draw.

As for championship form, and I know it's still February, but it'll take a brave performance to usurp Donegal in Ulster. They are way ahead of the pack. Armagh threw the kitchen sink at them yesterday but they've too many high calibre players in key positions. They're so well set up both in attack and defence. And they have a conveyor belt of talent coming through judging by that bench impact. I'd love to get a look at their S&C program. Their power running and physicality is mightily impressive and if it was any other team you'd say they were at risk of peaking too early. But you suspect that they have another gear , which is a depressing thought for the rest of us.

Granted Div 1 is a shark tank but Monaghan appear ripe for the drop next year. If we can secure our Div 2 status I don't see why we can't give them a good rattle in April.

So here we are 4 games in and on the amount of points that alot of people were predicting we would be on at this stage.

Alot of negativity towards management but we did better than expected in the first two games by being in a position to win late on which is probably adding to frustration. It would be nice if we never had to play Tyrone again giving the performances that we regularly put in against them it just isn't good enough.

Did enough last weekend to get the win and probably need two more wins to ensure we stay up and having Louth on the head to head is going to be important i feel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 310 ✭✭tazman06

I'd agree mostly. The Tyrone game looking a huge outlier. First 2 games we were winning, and we learned enough for Kildare game on how to close it out which is vital

I would still hazard caution. Kildare looked out of ideas, missing 2 important players, and took GMac coming on to turn that tide. We had 32 shots, scored 13 of them (with 3 x 2 pointers). We have to be better at the % against Louth. Carolan may not be fit, Brian O'Connell was walking wounded too. Need those guys to keep Louth at bay. But hopefully a win switches things and pushes us on. As anything, things are not usually as good or bad they seem

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,721 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

It’s quite clear management don’t have much faith in the bench. Niall Carolan was clearly injured and had to literally walk over to the bench and gesture directly for the switch to get made.

We also only made three subs when a number of players were dead on their feet. Management appear to be attempting to play the old game shoehorned into the new tactics.

It’s very hard on our players running the ball all the time. The new game is built for kick passing but we rarely kick it. A quick kick pass would leave us three on three.

The one sweeping move I can remember we did towards the end involved McGovern and it was a pity he put it wide.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20 Cavanlad23

Very slow in attack, we do turnover a fair bit of ball but piss about with it and let the opposition get set up before attacking.

All in all what the games have shown is that the margins are so slim in this division. 2 last minute 2 pointers conceded the difference between fighting for promotion or relegation.

I do think we will stay up. Louth and Kildare have a harder run in than us. Vital we beat Louth though although I wouldn't put it past us to beat Louth and lose to Offaly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 565 ✭✭✭mylestheslasher

Louth are Leinster Champions, just beat Tyrone. I am not overly confident we will beat them. Bookies see it as 50:50. We beat a Kildare team of kids, decimated by injury - just about. If I was a neutral I would be backing Louth.

Decimated by injuries? They had one certain starter out injured in feely. Beirne suspended so that makes two out from there available team. Full of kids, f*** me Kildare always going through a transiton period good enough to beat them when they look down on other counties when they've achieved nothing. Can only beat whats infront of you.

Louth? We always perform well against them, Don't remember the last time we lost to them. They barely got by Offaly, fair enough they bet a shite Tyrone team, we never can beat them so I would scratch the idea that they are good because they bet Tyrone. It will be a tight game but Cavan by 3+
