Well that changes thing then O'Donovan just needs to tell clubs they'll be fined out the wazoo if they dont keep flares outta their own ground, and to get fùcked if they think they'll get funding to repair the pitch after their own negligence let it be damaged.

I don't think it's ok to generalize, which is exactly what you're doing. Thousands of people attend sold out LOI grounds (that are crumbling due to lack of public investment) every week, every month, every year without a single ounce of trouble, yet the narrative is that "LOI fans are violent thugs", and that's what you'll read in the papers this week.

Meanwhile the same media published articles like this:

6 Of The Greatest GAA Brawls Of All-Time | Balls.ie

The amount of time volunteers put in to our sport every day, every week, every month to improve their communities, including combating anti-social behavior at the games and the community at large, puts people like you to shame.

So if you come on this thread licking your lips at something like this, not to talk about Dawson Devoy's excellent free-kick, or any of the other things that happened, pontificating about government funding being removed from something that has been proven time and time again to have both a huge net positive to a) the economy and b) the community at large, you can't expect to not be called out as being completely, utterly and demonstrably wrong.

It's all very strange, but part of it could be Rovers believe Noonan has a better chance to make something of himself if he goes to Hoffenheim rather than Celtic.

I don't know what the sell on clauses Rovers were looking for were going to be, but if it was up at 20% and they believe Noonan has the chance to become a €20 million striker at his next club........well that becomes a lot of money for them.

So they become much more concerned with where would be best for the player's development, even if the player's family disagrees. Now I don't know if that's what happened, but it's a guess at maybe why his family could be frustrated with the whole thing.

Separately as for the vandalism up at Oriel Park, having Drogheda pay for it and a couple of games behind closed doors at home is the answer to it. The massive cost of paying for it would spring the club to try to prevent it happening again, and home fans not getting to see a few games means they'd be much more proactive at stopping the "nutters" in their home support who are happy to destroy other clubs facilities and don't mind injuring kids.

People will stop bringing flares into a ground if they think their fellow fans will beat the crap out of them for it.

I like the pyro, but unfortunately a few pricks have ruined it for the rest of us.

Why would I want to engage with ‘the issues’ when I’m in this thread to discuss football. I’m stunned you’ve been allowed derail this much already but I’ve no intention of engaging further than laughter.

There are a good many loi supporters that are violent thugs. It's not by accident that home and away supporters have to be kept separate. So don't go on like this isn't a problem. Trouble happens regularly, not at every game, but regularly. There are a number of crowd trouble issues every season.

And yes, it's ok to generalise here. Flares are seen weekly at games and regularly end up thrown. The state should not be funding surfaces that can be damaged by flares, writing off their investment. All the clubs do is issue statements and do **** all else, it's not good enough.

Its not derailing the thread, it's the most reported on issues arising from the league this weekend. But no, you don't want to talk about it - sweep it under the astro. It's the best league in the world after all and the fans are the salt of the earth.

The league has a problem, that a lot of fans refuse to face up to. Up to 30 missiles were thrown onto the field and a child was burned. They were fighting at the train station as well.

It was a miracle that none of the fire service people weren't hurt by the flares thrown, they didnt even have hard hats on and were walking around in smoke, trying to pick the flares up while the thugs threw more flares on the pitch. them kind of "fans" should be banned from every LOI ground in Ireland.

Did the Barry Cotter end up going through in the end? All the talk out of Derry was that it was done but deadline passed last night and no confirmation

Rovers released a fairly short statement last night clarifying that the complaint related solely to the player's agent and that the club is not the subject of any investigation. It went on to say they've been working with FIFA since August last year reviewing two agency agreements and that this is ongoing. No indictation was given as to what the issue with them is.

Saw a decent idea to tackle keepers messing later in games to slow things down. There was talk that in effort to stop cynical ploys to slow down games , if a player is “injured” for more then 15-30 seconds , they have to go off field for a minute.

Somebody suggested that if a keeper needs treatment that an outfield player has to go off for a minute.

Has its obvious flaws and limits but I’d love to know how many genuine injuries there actually are in the average game. I’m sick of seeing keepers lie down after our team is starting to build up steam and there’s maybe 15 or less minutes to go.

I think the Bohs keeper went down 3 times last Friday night. Maybe 4.

most of middle ireland have an interest in all sports but the thoughts of going to a LOI game with scumbags looking for fights and roaring obscenities from start to finish is not appealing .
In limerick one can go to Rugby or hurling matchs with far bigger crowds and no hassle . Go to the markets field to a treaty match in front of a thousand people and you run the risk of local yobs or one of the 50 away fans hitting you with a flare or a rock , not worth the hassle . LOI has a huge issue with thuggery on the terraces and needs to finally tackle it to attract middle ireland

you clearly dont stand on gaa terraces if you think loi grounds are the only ones that have people shouting obscenities but go on….

Living next to the Markets field all my life and have never seen any trouble at Limerick/Treaty matches but I stay out of town when the hurling is on!

Seen plenty Limerick hurling fans cause trouble.

Patrick O Donovan is looking for excuse to just not fund football. Sadly he has one now.

Minister O'Donovan taking a hard line on the damage to the pitch in Dundalk, no more funding for artificial pitches until the flares issue is resolved by FAI. Sounds fair enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,596 ✭✭✭ratracer

It doesn’t sound in any way fair to any other club, at any level in the country.
This damage was caused by Drogheda supporters. The financial hit is going to be Dundalk’s.

Some teams have previously had parts of their stadiums closed for similar. If the LoI want to get serious about the already banned Pyros’s, then Drogheda need to be docked points and either not allowed any away allocation, or play a couple of home games behind closed doors. It is the only way clubs will take it seriously. There are already fines in place for the clubs, but this measure has shown to be ineffective.

O’Donovan is way out of line here by painting all clubs with the one brush.

Just seen Rovers have made another loan signing with a Waterford connection. Maleace Asamoah a striker is coming from Wigan Athletic but it seems he played at Waterford in 2024 on loan from Fleetwood. Comments online by Wigan fans wouldn't exactly fill me with confidence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 128 ✭✭RamonD3

Remember he looked the business when Waterford won in Tallaght on a bank holiday game a couple of years back. Interesting signing and serious depth in the squad now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,819 ✭✭✭✭Oat23

Their opinions might be influenced by the fact he was subbed on and then sent off for them 2 days ago in a 4-2 loss.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,157 ✭✭✭✭CSF

Not to entice the Current Affairs trolls, but is there any update on whether Drogheda are gonna get an away ban for it?

Given ours and Bohs bans over the last couple of years it would be a surprise if Drogheda avoided similar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,078 ✭✭✭PGE1970

We can't complain if a ban is applied

Every Drogheda supporter I know is disgusted with what happened on Friday. I was lost for words looking at it and I'm no less angry or dismayed now.

The LoI community is a small one. We've all been out with the buckets at some time or another, selling raffle tickets or going door to door.

Otdinary decent people in Dundalk put their hands in their pockets to contribute towards their new pitch only to see it burnt by vandals on the night that it was officially launched.

It was a despicable act but please know that the overwhelming amount of Drogheda supporters, who go to UP with their children and grandchildren, are disgusted by what happened.

    Cotter signing confirmed.

We needed a RB badly. Hopefully might add some balance to the team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,157 ✭✭✭✭CSF

The only reason there’d be merit to a ban is the fact that they’ve set a precedent.

Otherwise, this kind of thing wouldn’t happen in any other walk of life where fully grown adults are being punished for the behaviour of people they likely don’t even know.

Acts of violence at tonnes of other sports (including the referee in GAA matches) but they wouldn’t dare shut down the community there over the acts of a minority.

I'd be more inclined to hold Dundalk responsible. Do they not have stewards? If flares are in fact not allowed then the stewards should have confiscated them before they entered the ground.

If they decided to ignore and let flares in then the blame surely lies with them* not doing their job?

*obviously not excusing the Drogheda yobs that actually threw it off course - but point being they shouldn't have been given the opportunity to throw them if they had been confiscated.
