Surely the biggest issue with the SCOTUS ruling is that Trump has lost all the power of threat. He can claim he will impose tariffs if Country A doesn't do X, but they all know it's temporary at best.

Remember, at the time the tariffs were launched, Bessent and Lutnick were constantly saying how many countries were on the phone begging for a deal? Well, none of that will work now.

Trump, the bully, has been completely defanged. An that is before the possible losing seats in the midterms.

So while he will of course bluster about how he will ignore the court, or choose a different avenue, this was the core of their entire economic policy. It was never supposed to be about the tariffs, it was supposed to be about bringing production, jobs and investment back to the US. 15% is not going to achieve that.

The SC is essentially powerless to stop someone like Trump in those instances where they disagree with him. They take months to hear cases and write opinions while Trump can make things happen with the stroke of a pen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,852 ✭✭✭Wolf359f

He can't even threaten that anymore. He cannot single out a country now (under the current act). If China decide to impose 20% tariffs on US agriculture, Trump can't respond in kind. Same for the EU and their paused countermeasures. Why should the EU not impose them now, knowing Trump is powerless to strike back and extremely limited in his trade war arsenal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,599 ✭✭✭✭charlie14

The EU would not even need to put itself to the trouble of doing that. Just tell him that if he applies this 15% on the E.U. they will do it. As he is he can only impose 15% using executive orders under that act and to increase that 15% further he would need to get approval from congress. A few examples from the E.U. that would effect red states would nicely focus Republican lawmakers minds with the mid terms coming up.

The old b^st*rd had no problem kicking everyone else, now those shoes are on others feet so it would do them good to get a bit of a kicking. It might even put a bit of manners on some of them.

The EU tends to wait until the tariffs are actually enacted before they speak up. They know Trump says one thing but when the XO needs to be signed he changes it.

The EU already has a counter package of tariffs ready to enact that specifically target industries in key red states and limit the damage to EU companies who import goods from the US. I'm sure they will meet to discuss the next steps. There's also the possibility of China reneging on their agreement to buy more soy beans from the US. I suspect that will not happen now. Interesting times ahead.

5th Circuit Court of Appeals lifts block on Louisiana law displaying the ten commandments in schools.

It ruled by 12-6 that there wasn't enough evidence to decide whether or not it's constitutional.

Texas has already passed a similar law.

Two thirds of the judges on the 5th Circuit Court of appeals are Republican appointees.

Historically SCOTUS has held that displaying the ten commandments in schools is unconstitutional because of the Establishment Clause, which bans the establishment of an official religion. This was introduced because before US independence, religious test oaths were required in some colonies to hold office. In most, this required being a Protestant, while in others it required being a Christian.

Many people have been arguing that the court needs to be expanded. If there were more justices then the retirement of one would be of lesser importance. Now, it 11% of the court. Additionally there needs to be a limit on the number of judges that any one President can appoint.

Interestingly a well known lawyer I know ( my wife’s mentor) has now changed his mind and now agrees.

Trump demands Netflix fire Susan Rice, Obama's former NSA, from its board "or face the consequences".

Comes as Netflix is seeking approval of its takeover of Warner Brothers. Paramount, which is owned by the Ellisons who are also the largest shareholders in Palantir, is seeking to block the takeover. Warner Brothers owns CNN, but the current plan is that CNN and some other channels will be separated into a company called Warner Bros. Discovery.

President Trump on Saturday called on Netflix to fire former United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice from its board of directors after she warned about an “accountability agenda” if Democrats regain power in the upcoming elections.

“Netflix should fire racist, Trump Deranged Susan Rice, IMMEDIATELY, or pay the consequences. She’s got no talent or skills – Purely a political hack! HER POWER IS GONE, AND WILL NEVER BE BACK. How much is she being paid, and for what???” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.

Rice argued during a podcast this week that corporations, media companies, law firms and universities that “take a knee” to Trump should not expect Democrats to “forgive and forget.”

“It’s not going to end well for them, for those that decided that it was, you know, that they would act in their perceived, very narrow self-interest, which I would underscore is very short-term self-interest,” she told Preet Bharara, a former U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York.

Rice suggested those entities were aware of the possibility of an electoral shift happening in the midterms, pointing to Trump’s fledgling approval ratings on the economy and immigration.

“I think they’re now starting to realize, ‘Wait a minute, you know, this is not popular. Trump is not popular.’ What he is doing, whether on the economy and affordability or on immigration, now, is not popular, and that there is likely to be a swing in the other direction, and they are going to be caught with more than their pants down. They’re going to be held accountable by those who come in opposition to Trump and win at the ballot box,” she said.

She further noted that companies were already being told to “preserve their documents” and be “ready for subpoenas.”

A group of eight Senate Democrats demanded in a Thursday letter to Paramount Chairman and CEO David Ellison that the company preserve records related to its hostile takeover bid for Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD). Netflix has already reached a $72 billion deal to acquire WBD’s movie and television studio.

United Health Care CEO Barragan challenged on denial rates which questioner says is 33% for health insurance claims. He says the rate is actually 2%.

I get he's going this general 15% tarrif across the board but is there any mechanisms where he can increase it on individual countries or does it have to go through Congress. Also why doesn't he put it through Congress?

I thought Greenland were sending help to America,, there's a lot more sick people in America than Greenland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,283 ✭✭✭bog master

I would think sending the ship to Gaza would be more appropriate.

Quote I saw online about the ship to Greenland 'its going to be shaped like a giant wooden dolphin, to be pulled inside the gates'.

Trump's post came hours after a US sub crew member required urgent medical treatment in Greenland's waters, roughly seven nautical miles outside Nuuk.

Trump: Vil sende hospitalsskib til Grønland

What was a US sub doing hanging around outside Nuuk? So it was an american military person who was injured

They regularly are on patrol in Arctic waters, I don't think there's anything to see here. For one, they track RuZZian submarines.

There's a massive build up of troops near Iran, your commander in chief is attacking supreme Court judges while draping images of himself on buildings, and is spearheading a massive cover up of the biggest sexual abuse scandal in living memory, there's a ruling which says that your country must repay billions, and your contribution to the discussion in this highly consequential and volatile time in history is to proof read other posters??!

    Okay then.

This would appear to be the facts of the Greenland situation, also noteworthy that both the US Navy hospital ships are currently in drydock in Alabama.

I'm sure the evacuated American will be grateful to have been taken to a country with functional healthcare and no threat of bankruptcy

Don't know the answer to that. Not sure how to WORD a query to the net to get a factual answer. Tried once and got dribble of quotes from Trump and how K may be T's choice to replace J if he retires.

Suggest that you read the link that you posted, then read up on the issues with ilness that the USA has.

Spoiler alert: The USA does not compare favourably.

The US Navy has 2 actual hospital ships both of which are currently in dry dock so god knows what the fvck he is sending to Greenland

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,184 ✭✭✭✭banie01

The USNS Thoughts & Prayers 😉

The Danes took a sick/injured US submariner off a sub for treatment.
Trump's dementia addled brain heard Greenland, Hospital & Treatment and somehow parlayed that into the pile of shíte he posted regarding "sending a ship".

So the obvious thing for most of the separate countries in the EU (all on their own initiative of course) is to instruct their ambassadors and/or trade reps to approach the Governors/State Senators & D.C Senators & Congresspersons directly and ask pertinent (state to state) commercial trade questions outside Trumps purview, commiserating on how that persons interference in day to day trade actions is causing major hiccups for the individual states ensuring the Yanks know their conversations are all completely hush hush outside the usual DC circuit talks. Cut him out of the loop and gut him while smiling at his Dept Secretaries.

Probably some plan they have to send "inhospital boats" if they don't cough up all their uranium to the Board of Peace

Can the commander and thief just do an executive order to scrap the constitution because he's is not abiding by it in anyway and while he has near to full capitulation of the press, congress, senate, big business and still a loyal base of 40% just go for it…

They are doing all this to distract from the Trump-Epstein files. They are also aided and abetted by Fox entertainment.
